LEGO is one part of a much broader story of architectural construction kits. Between 1890 and 1990, makers experimented with artificial brick, wood, metal, Galalith, rubber and different ways of joining pieces into reusable structures. An exhibition at Vienna’s MAK – Museum of Applied Arts brings around 150 examples together, showing how many routes toy makers explored before interlocking bricks became dominant.
What the MAK exhibition reveals about vintage building kits
ARCHITECTURAL CONSTRUCTION KITS 1890–1990: Plenty to Play With! is an exhibition by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), hosted at the MAK in Vienna from 7 October 2026 to 14 March 2027. Its starting point is graphic designer Claus Krieger’s private collection of roughly 150 construction kits.

The collection spans a century, not a single standardized product category. The MAK describes kits made from artificial brick, wood, metal, Galalith and rubber, alongside experiments in how parts could be connected securely and then taken apart. The exhibition’s examples include an Austrian Ingenius kit dated 1924 to probably 1929, French Les Bois de Megève from around 1930, a Dutch Elba kit from around 1940 and a German (Thuringia) Plaspi kit from around 1980. The museum identifies these examples but does not provide construction details for each on its exhibition page.
That variety makes the kits interesting as designed systems: materials shape how a model feels, while a connection method affects stability, rebuilding and the forms a kit encourages. The MAK’s historical thesis is that LEGO perfected the interlocking principle and that most other companies disappeared. That is the museum’s summary of a broad outcome, not proof that connection design alone explains the fortunes of every maker.

How LEGO fits into the architectural-kit story
LEGO’s own architectural focus predates its current Architecture series. The company says its Scale Model line launched in the early 1960s for older children and adults interested in building. It introduced five elements, including thinner plates scaled to LEGO bricks. Larger sets 750, 751 and 752 featured architectural drawings on their packaging and included an architectural idea book. LEGO says the line did not catch on and was discontinued in the mid-1960s.
LEGO dates the start of its Architecture series to 2008, when architect Adam Reed Tucker developed models of the Willis Tower (then the Sears Tower) and John Hancock Center. LEGO says the sets include a booklet about the real building’s architecture and history. Tucker described his aim this way: “I wanted to tell a story, and not just sell a box of bricks.”

These two LEGO efforts show that architectural modeling has been a recurring strand in the company’s own history, rather than a recent invention. They do not make every older construction kit a direct LEGO competitor: the broader exhibition is about many makers and approaches to architectural play.

The MAK’s accompanying book, 111 Architekturbaukästen. Sammlung Claus Krieger, is a 2025 German-language publication from Jovis Verlag. The museum describes it as 272 pages with 500 images. It is a useful next step for readers who want more examples than an exhibition overview can provide; check the current listing for availability and price.

A modern option for architectural model building
For a present-day building activity rather than a vintage collectible, Arckit offers a reusable architectural model-building system. Its US product page lists the A500 with 550 pieces, printable surface graphics, cardboard figures and landscape pieces, a pitched-roof design set, an introductory booklet, additional online designs, and digital components for SketchUp and Tinkercad. Arckit says its sets are compatible with one another and recommends the A500 for ages 14 and up. The page listed it at $550 on 7 October 2026; product specifications and price can change.
Arckit founder and architect Damien Murtagh says the idea came from looking for a fast, reusable and cost-effective physical model system while developing a modular building concept. That is the company’s account of its origins. Arckit is a contemporary adjacent option, not a surviving example from the historical collection.

What to check before buying a vintage kit
The exhibition documents the breadth of the category, but it does not establish the condition, completeness, safety, price or compatibility of any particular kit offered for sale. Treat those as questions about the individual listing, not assumptions about vintage architectural kits as a whole.
