The easiest way to move a file depends on the devices involved and whether they’re near each other. For nearby transfers, start with AirDrop between Apple devices, Quick Share from Android to Windows, or Nearby sharing between Windows PCs. If the devices are apart, use a cloud link or sync; for an offline handoff, removable storage may work.
Choose a method by device pair and distance
| Method | Works with | Connection and distance | Limits and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirDrop | Nearby Apple devices | Bluetooth Low Energy finds devices; peer-to-peer Wi-Fi carries the transfer without an internet connection or wireless access point. | Visibility can be set to Contacts Only, everyone, or off. Apple describes AirDrop as best for a small selection of files. |
| Quick Share | Android devices and Windows PCs | For nearby sharing. Google’s troubleshooting recommends bringing devices within 30 centimeters; that is a troubleshooting tip, not a maximum range. | The receiver generally accepts the transfer; transfers between devices on the same Google account are accepted automatically. Visibility options include Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, or No one. |
| Nearby sharing | Supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs | Uses Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Windows 11 can use Wi-Fi when both PCs are on the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise it may use Bluetooth. | Both PCs must have the feature enabled. Sharing can be limited to your own devices or opened to everyone nearby. |
| Phone Link | Qualifying Android devices and Windows PCs | Requires compatible apps and devices; it is not a general-purpose transfer method for every Android and Windows pairing. | Drag and drop supports up to 100 files at a time, with no file over 512 MB. Folders and cloud-backed files are excluded from that feature. |
| Cloud link or sync | Devices that can access the chosen cloud service | Useful when devices are apart or files need to remain available across devices. | Use the service’s sharing controls; a link is not automatically private. |
| Removable storage | Devices that support the drive’s connector and file system | Physical, offline handoff. | Check compatibility with both devices before relying on a drive. |
Send between Apple devices with AirDrop
For a nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac, enable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and AirDrop on both devices. Open the item’s share sheet, select AirDrop, then choose the receiving device. Contacts and AirDrop visibility settings can affect whether the other device appears. Apple’s security guide says the peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection is encrypted with TLS and does not require an internet connection or wireless access point. Apple Platform Security: AirDrop

AirDrop is for Apple-to-Apple sharing, not a general route to Windows or Android. Apple’s guidance describes it as best for a small selection of files and points to storage devices, servers, or cloud services for moving many files. Apple’s AirDrop guide
Send from Android to Windows with Quick Share
- Install and enable Quick Share on the Android device and Windows PC. On a Samsung PC, Google directs users to Samsung’s Quick Share app in the Microsoft Store; on other Windows PCs, use Google’s app.
- Choose a file on Android, or select or drag files into the Windows app, then choose the receiving device.
- Accept the transfer on the receiving device when prompted. If both devices use the same Google account, Google says the transfer is accepted automatically.
Set visibility to suit the situation: Google offers Everyone, Contacts, Your devices, and No one, and recommends Contacts or Your devices for more private sharing. If the recipient does not appear, check that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on, visibility permits discovery, and Quick Share is installed and enabled on both devices. Some office Wi-Fi networks block device-to-device sharing; Google suggests trying a phone hotspot as a possible workaround. Its troubleshooting advice is to bring the devices within 30 centimeters. These steps do not guarantee that Quick Share works on every network or without internet access. Google’s Android-to-Windows Quick Share instructions and Quick Share on Android

Send between Windows PCs with Nearby sharing
On supported Windows PCs, enable Nearby sharing on both computers, then share the file and choose the receiving PC. You can restrict discovery to your own devices or select everyone nearby. Microsoft warns that choosing “Everyone nearby” exposes the PC name and Bluetooth MAC address to nearby devices.
Windows 11 can use Wi-Fi for Nearby sharing when the other PC is on the same private Wi-Fi network; otherwise the feature may use Bluetooth. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so check your Windows version and its support status before following legacy instructions. Microsoft’s Nearby sharing guidance

Use Phone Link for Android-to-Windows transfers
Phone Link is another option for qualifying Android devices and Windows PCs. Microsoft’s published requirements include Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, Android 10 or later, and specified versions of the Phone Link and Link to Windows apps. Check Microsoft’s current requirements for your device before setting it up.
For drag and drop, Microsoft documents a limit of 100 files at a time and 512 MB per file. Folders and cloud-backed files are excluded from that feature. Only locally saved files can be shared as files; cloud-stored items share a link instead. A separate cross-device clipboard feature transfers text and images, not arbitrary files, and images larger than 1 MB are resized. Microsoft’s Phone Link transfer instructions

When the devices are apart, use a cloud link or sync
If the devices are not close enough for a nearby transfer, a cloud service can make a file accessible from both or let you share a link. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes sharing OneDrive links and inviting specific people. Choose the access controls that match your needs, especially if the file contains private information. A cloud link suits remote access or recurring availability; a nearby transfer is a direct handoff. Microsoft’s Windows file-sharing guidance

A USB-C flash drive can be useful for an offline handoff or many files, but it is not universal. Confirm that both devices support the connector and the drive’s file system. A phone may need a compatible adapter or may not support the drive at all.

Fix common nearby-sharing problems
- The other device does not appear: Check that the relevant sharing feature is enabled on both devices, visibility allows discovery, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on where required.
- Quick Share fails on an office network: The network may block device-to-device sharing. Google suggests a phone hotspot as a possible workaround; follow your organization’s network rules.
- You’re using Windows: Confirm both PCs support the chosen feature and check Windows lifecycle status. Nearby sharing and Quick Share are separate features for different device pairings.
- You need to move many files: Phone Link drag and drop excludes folders and cloud-backed files. Consider another supported transfer route, such as removable storage or cloud storage.
- You need ongoing access rather than a one-time handoff: Use cloud sync or a controlled sharing link instead of repeatedly sending copies.
