Word links that mark to the note, and deleting the mark removes the associated footnote. Microsoft explains how the link behaves.

Select and cut that reference mark. Place the insertion point where the citation belongs, then paste the mark.
-
Check that the footnote text remains in place and that the reference is numbered correctly. The cut-and-paste method follows Word’s documented link between the body mark and its note; Microsoft does not document a separate command specifically called “move a footnote.”
If the note disappears or numbering changes unexpectedly, undo the edit and try again. Microsoft says removing the body reference mark deletes its associated note. In Word for the web, deleting a note can also renumber the remaining notes in their new order. See Microsoft’s Word for the web guidance.

Change where footnotes appear instead
If you want to change the location of notes rather than move one citation in the prose, use Word’s Footnote and Endnote settings. In the documented Word for Mac interface, open the References tab, select the Footnote and Endnote dialog launcher, and choose the location. You can apply the change to the whole document or the current section. The exact controls may differ by edition; consult Microsoft’s Word for Mac instructions.
What moves, and what stays linked
-
The superscript number or symbol in the body is the footnote reference mark. Word pairs it with the footnote text.

A footnote normally appears at the bottom of a page; an endnote appears at the end of the document. Changing a reference mark’s position in the prose is different from changing where notes are displayed. Microsoft describes these terms in its footnotes and endnotes guide.

Available controls vary across desktop, web, and mobile versions. The Mac support instructions note that some table features may not be available in the web or mobile apps, so do not assume every interface has the same options.
