Neither MOV nor MP4 is automatically better for streaming. They are container formats; the codecs inside the file and the destination’s requirements determine whether it will play. For a specific platform, follow its ingest or encoding specifications and test the resulting stream on the devices your viewers use.
What MOV and MP4 tell you—and what they don’t
MOV and MP4 are containers: they package video, audio, and related data. A filename extension alone does not tell you whether the video uses H.264, HEVC, or another codec, nor whether a player or streaming service supports that codec and its settings.

That distinction matters because compatibility depends on the combination of container, video and audio codecs, codec profiles and levels, and the platform’s delivery workflow. An MP4 extension does not guarantee that a file contains H.264 or will play everywhere; a MOV file is not inherently unstreamable.

- Identify the destination and playback devices. Check the platform’s current requirements for accepted uploads or stream packaging, video and audio codecs, profiles, levels, and resolution. Do not rely on the extension as a substitute for those specifications.
- Decide whether you need a file or a streaming package. A downloadable MP4 is not the same thing as an HLS stream. HLS delivery uses playlists and media segments, which a client retrieves and reassembles for playback. Apple’s overview and deployment guide describe this workflow: Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming documentation and Deploying a Basic HLS Stream.
- Package and encode to the destination’s rules. For Apple-device HLS authoring, Apple specifies fragmented MP4 for HEVC video, and fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams for H.264 video. Consult the Apple HLS authoring specification for the applicable requirements.
- Validate the output on target clients. Test the actual encoded stream, including its audio track and packaging, on the intended devices and players. A valid-looking extension does not establish compatibility.
For HLS, think beyond the file extension
In an HLS workflow, the delivered media is organized as playlists and segments, served over HTTP and played by a client. Apple’s authoring specification lists MIME types including application/vnd.apple.mpegurl for HLS playlists, video/mp4 for fragmented MP4, video/iso.segment for .m4s segments, and video/mp2t for MPEG transport stream. These labels belong to the delivery package; simply naming a file .mp4 does not create a conforming HLS stream.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Apple’s HLS rules are relevant when authoring for Apple devices, not a universal ingest specification for every service. For other destinations, use that platform’s current requirements.
When MOV makes sense—and when MP4 may fit
Choose based on the actual software and destination rather than assuming one container has universally better quality, smaller files, or wider compatibility. A service may accept an editing or source file and transcode it for delivery; a self-managed HLS workflow must create the required playlists and segments itself.

Mac exports with QuickTime Player
Apple’s QuickTime Player support guide says the app exports QuickTime .mov using H.264 or HEVC, and does not export MP4 videos. Available output resolution and data rate depend on the source. If your destination specifically requires an MP4 container, choose an export or encoding workflow that can produce that container rather than assuming QuickTime Player’s MOV export will satisfy the requirement. - Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Common mistakes to avoid
- Renaming .mov to .mp4: changing the extension does not convert the container, codecs, or stream packaging. Use an actual export or remux/encoding workflow that meets the destination’s specifications.
- Assuming MP4 means H.264: the container does not by itself identify the video codec. Verify the encoded file’s streams and settings.
- Treating an accepted upload as proof of universal playback: a host may transcode an accepted file, while another destination may reject it or handle it differently.
- Confusing an MP4 download with HLS: HLS requires playlists and media segments, not just a single file with an MP4 extension.
Keep a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel broadcasting uploaded videos continuously, rather than choose an HLS package for a general-purpose video player, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. It is built to loop uploaded videos on YouTube, not to stream from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud so your computer does not have to stay on. See StreamNeo.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
