Mouse Pad Not Working? Quick Troubleshooting for Mice and Laptop Touchpads

Is your mouse cursor skipping or your laptop touchpad unresponsive? Identify the device, then follow targeted checks for surfaces, connections, power, pairing and settings.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First, identify which device is failing: does an external mouse’s cursor skip or stop moving on the desk, or is the laptop’s built-in touchpad unresponsive? The desk surface, mouse connection and touchpad settings call for different checks. If the mouse cursor is not moving, start with the relevant path below.

Is the mouse pad not working—or is the touchpad?

A mouse pad is the surface beneath an external mouse. A laptop touchpad is the integrated touch-sensitive panel. If an external mouse moves poorly, check its sensor and tracking surface. If the laptop’s touchpad fails, check whether it is enabled and review the laptop maker’s device guidance. If both devices fail, a computer-side or software issue is possible, but that observation alone does not identify the cause.

If the mouse keeps skipping or is not tracking

  1. Test another surface. Try plain white paper or a different mouse pad. Logitech recommends: “Try a different mouse pad.” If tracking improves, the original surface may be contributing, but the test does not prove that the pad is damaged or needs replacement. Logitech’s tracking troubleshooting guide advises avoiding glass or other see-through surfaces, reflective surfaces such as mirrors or metal desks, grooved or wood-grain surfaces, and very glossy finishes.
  2. Check the sensor opening. Turn the mouse over and look for dust or lint around the sensor; clear away debris carefully.

If the mouse still will not track on another suitable surface, continue with the connection checks for its connection type.

If a wired USB mouse does not respond

  1. Unplug the mouse, wait briefly, then reconnect it.
  2. Try another USB port. If it is connected through a hub, check that the hub has power; if the problem persists, bypass the hub and connect the mouse directly to the computer.
  3. Inspect the cable for visible damage and check whether the mouse has a power indication.

If the computer detects the mouse but its behavior is slow or unusual, check the relevant mouse settings and device or driver update status rather than assuming the surface is at fault. Microsoft’s Windows mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; exact settings and labels can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s general instruction is: “Having trouble with a device? Make sure everything is connected properly, the device has power, and that it’s set up correctly.”

If a wireless mouse does not respond

USB receiver mouse

A USB wireless mouse uses a receiver plugged into the computer. Reseat it: unplug the receiver, wait about 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Some mice or receivers also have a reset button; check the device’s guidance if reseating does not help. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting steps describe this receiver reset.

Bluetooth mouse

  1. Check that the batteries are installed correctly or charge the mouse.
  2. Confirm it is paired with the computer you are using. If it is listed as paired but still does not work, remove it from the computer’s Bluetooth devices and pair it again.
  3. Temporarily turn off other connected Bluetooth devices to check whether the connection improves.
  4. If it still fails, test it on another computer, accounting for any driver the device requires.

Microsoft says some of its Bluetooth devices can enter an inactive power-saving state and take several seconds to reconnect. Its Surface guidance describes this behavior after 8–10 minutes of inactivity; that interval applies to the covered Surface guidance, not necessarily to every Bluetooth mouse. See Microsoft’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guide.

If the laptop touchpad is not working

The touchpad may be disabled or its settings may not suit your setup. On Surface devices, Microsoft lists these Windows settings paths:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows 11: Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad
  • Windows 10: Start > Settings > Devices > Touchpad

Check that the touchpad is enabled, then review cursor speed and related controls. Microsoft says Surface touchpad settings can turn the touchpad on or off, adjust cursor speed, reverse scrolling direction, and change three-finger and four-finger gestures. These instructions are Surface-specific; other laptop brands and operating systems may use different settings. If the path does not match your device, consult its manufacturer’s instructions. See Microsoft’s Surface touchpad guide.

Find out whether the mouse or computer is at fault

If the mouse has no lights, no cursor movement, or no response after the relevant connection and power checks, test it on another computer. If it works there, focus on the original computer’s port, setup, or software. If it fails on the second computer too, the mouse may need replacement—but first make sure the test computer has any driver the mouse requires. For Microsoft or Surface Bluetooth accessories, check power, pairing, and battery before drawing that conclusion. Microsoft also recommends restarting or updating the PC for some slow or incorrect behavior in its Surface accessory guidance.
