Windows 11’s documented way to switch Mouse Keys on or off is Settings > Accessibility > Mouse > Mouse keys. Turning the feature on is separate from showing or hiding taskbar icons: Microsoft’s taskbar instructions do not document a dedicated Mouse Keys icon or a way to pin one.
Turn Mouse Keys on or off
Mouse Keys lets you use the keyboard’s numeric keypad to move the pointer instead of using a mouse. To change the feature’s state:

- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility.
- Under Interaction, select Mouse.
- Turn the Mouse keys toggle on or off.
You can also press Windows logo key + U to open Accessibility settings, then select Mouse under Interaction. Microsoft explains how the feature works in its Mouse Keys instructions and documents the shortcut in its mouse and input accessibility settings.
Can you add or remove a Mouse Keys taskbar icon?
The official Microsoft instructions reviewed for this article do not establish a dedicated Mouse Keys taskbar icon setting or a procedure for pinning one. They describe the Mouse keys toggle in Accessibility settings, while the taskbar documentation covers system tray icons and overflow generally—not a Mouse Keys-specific icon.

If you want to manage the icons Windows exposes, right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings, and inspect the system tray icon and overflow sections. Depending on your Windows update and configuration, available options and labels may vary. Microsoft’s guidance on customizing the taskbar explains system tray and overflow controls, and its taskbar navigation guide describes working with the taskbar.
- To stop using Mouse Keys, turn off the Mouse keys toggle in Accessibility settings.
- To change which supported icons appear in the tray or overflow, use Taskbar settings. That does not turn Mouse Keys on or off.
Using Mouse Keys without a numeric keypad
Microsoft describes Mouse Keys as using the numeric keypad in place of a mouse to move the pointer. If your keyboard has no numeric keypad, an external numeric keypad is an optional accessory to consider; the feature itself does not require buying one if you already have a usable keypad. Microsoft’s documentation does not endorse a particular accessory or guarantee compatibility for every setup.
