Neither mouse and keyboard nor controller is best for every FPS player. A mouse offers a broad physical aiming surface and direct control that can help with precise, quick shots; a controller offers graded movement, continuous stick input, and often a more comfortable setup for couch play. The right choice depends on the game’s support and rules, your comfort, and which input you know well.
How aiming and movement feel on each input
Mouse and keyboard: direct aim and a broad surface
A mouse lets you move your hand across a surface to steer the camera, giving you a wider physical range for aiming than a thumbstick. That can make fine adjustments and fast turns feel direct. Keyboard movement, by contrast, is generally binary: a key is pressed or it is not. Intel’s comparison describes mouse aim as more precise while noting that the best choice still depends on the game and player preference: Intel’s mouse-and-keyboard versus controller overview.

Controller: graded movement and continuous stick input
Analog sticks let you vary the direction and degree of movement rather than relying only on discrete key presses. They also provide continuous camera input from a thumbstick. Intel notes that sticks have less physical range and precision than a mouse, but that describes the input mechanism—not a guarantee that controller players will perform worse in every game.

A mouse-and-keyboard setup needs a usable surface and may be inconvenient if you play from a couch. A controller is portable and can be more comfortable for that style of play. Comfort is personal, however: hand position, posture, play space, and how long you play all matter.

Familiarity can outweigh a theoretical advantage. In a 2011 study of 45 participants playing PC and PlayStation 3 versions of Battlefield: Bad Company 2, players switched to an unfamiliar platform reported more usability problems and felt more challenged than players using their comfort platform. Their overall experience was still equally positive. The study is specific to its participants and game, but it is a useful reminder that switching inputs takes adjustment: Gerling, Klauser, and Niesenhaus’s 2011 study.
Why there is no universal winner
Comparisons depend on the game, task, equipment, and players tested. A 2008 target-acquisition study used Star Wars Battlefront II to compare a mouse, PlayStation 2 controller, and joystick. In its first study, overall performance did not differ significantly by device, though participants took fewer shots with a joystick in the sniper-rifle condition. In a second study involving participants expert with their device and joystick users who had received training, time to kill did not differ significantly; mouse users took significantly fewer shots than joystick or controller users. Those results describe particular tasks and conditions, not every modern FPS: Lenz, Chaparro, and Chaparro’s 2008 study.

Aim assistance is another game-specific factor. Blizzard says that Overwatch 2 uses console-specific aim assist to help bridge the difference in aiming precision between mouse and controller. That is Blizzard’s explanation of its own design, not proof that controllers are advantaged in every shooter or that every game handles assistance the same way. Its policy also illustrates why players should check the current rules for the game and platform they use: Blizzard’s statement on unapproved console peripherals.
Research on aim-assistance design also considers adapting assistance to a player’s spatial and temporal aiming ability. That is a design consideration, rather than evidence of a general controller advantage: the 2023 CHI paper on personalized aim-assistance algorithms.

Choose for the game you actually play
- Check the game’s current input support. Confirm whether the game supports mouse and keyboard, controller, or both on your platform.
- Check matchmaking and policy rules. Input restrictions and matchmaking behavior can vary by title and platform; do not assume a genre-wide rule.
- Identify what matters most to you. Consider direct mouse aiming, analog movement, comfort, play location, and your experience with each device.
- Test both in the same game if both are supported. Use similar settings and give an unfamiliar input time to feel usable. Judge comfort and control for your own play rather than assuming a device change will improve performance.
Quick decision guide
| If you prioritize… | Consider… |
|---|---|
| Broad physical aiming motion and direct mouse control | Mouse and keyboard |
| Graded movement and continuous thumbstick input | Controller |
| Couch play or a portable setup | Controller |
| A setup you already know well | Whichever input is familiar and supported by your game |
| A competitive or platform-specific ruleset | Whichever input the game allows under its current matchmaking and policy rules |
