If your Motorola phone is locked to a carrier, Motorola says the original carrier—not Motorola—is the party that can unlock it. Eligibility, timing, and whether the phone can work on another network depend on that carrier and the device. Bootloader unlocking is a separate process that changes the phone’s software and carries risks Motorola warns about.
First, identify which kind of unlock you mean
“Unlock” can describe two different things. A carrier or network unlock removes a restriction that ties a phone to one carrier. A bootloader unlock permits software or operating-system changes. One does not establish eligibility for the other.

- Carrier lock: If the phone displays a “subsidy password” prompt after you insert a SIM from another carrier, Motorola says the phone is locked to a specific carrier. Motorola’s carrier-unlock guidance says only the original carrier can unlock it.
- Bootloader lock: This concerns modifying the phone’s software, not removing a SIM or network restriction. Motorola describes it separately in its bootloader agreement.
How to request a carrier unlock
- Check for the carrier-lock prompt. Insert a SIM from another carrier if you have one. A request for a “subsidy password” indicates a carrier lock, according to Motorola.
- Identify the original carrier. Dial
*#06#to display the phone’s IMEI. If you do not know which network the phone is registered with, Motorola says its support team can use the IMEI to check. - Contact the original carrier. Ask it to check eligibility for that specific phone and account, explain any waiting period or other requirements, and provide its unlock request process. Motorola says carriers may lock devices for a predefined period, and network or software limitations can prevent unlocking.
- Use the carrier’s current process. Motorola’s US support page points to carrier-specific routes: an online request form for AT&T, an unlocking policy for Boost Mobile, the Device Unlock app for some T-Mobile phones (or contacting T-Mobile if the app is incompatible), and automatic unlocking after a certain period for most newly purchased Verizon devices. The page does not give current waiting periods or full eligibility requirements for every carrier, so confirm them directly with yours.
- Check the intended network’s compatibility. Use Motorola’s US carrier compatibility page to check the fit between your exact phone and the target carrier. Removing a carrier lock does not guarantee that the model supports the target network.
What the carrier can—and may not—do
The original carrier controls whether and when it will unlock the phone under its current rules. There is no universal wait time or guaranteed outcome in Motorola’s guidance. A device-specific answer may depend on the phone’s model and variant, the original carrier, the country, the account and device status, and the IMEI. Ask the carrier to assess the exact device rather than relying on a general timeframe.

Before switching, compare whether the carrier can unlock your existing phone, what conditions or delay apply, and whether the exact model will work on the intended network.

Bootloader unlocking is not a carrier unlock
Do not use bootloader unlocking as a way to remove a SIM or carrier restriction. Motorola’s agreement addresses software modification separately and states: “WARNING: MOTOROLA STRONGLY RECOMMENDS AGAINST UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER AND/OR MODIFYING OR ALTERING A DEVICE’S SOFTWARE OR OPERATING SYSTEM.”
The agreement warns that modifying software can cause malfunction, make the device inoperable, or cause permanent damage. It says obtaining a bootloader unlock code voids warranties under the agreement even if the bootloader is not later unlocked, places the associated risks on the user, and requires carrier approval for network operation of an unlocked device. It also says Motorola has no obligation under the agreement to support, update, repair, or replace an unlocked device. These are terms in Motorola’s agreement, not independent legal advice.

Motorola’s consumer help page on altering software additionally warns that OS changes may permanently damage a device, reduce its security, cause malfunction, affect warranty coverage, or invalidate certifications if they affect regulatory compliance. Exact bootloader eligibility and steps depend on the model, variant, and market; a carrier unlock does not answer that question.
