Motorola Edge 40 Review: A Strong Mid-Range Phone With Two Clear Flaws

The Motorola Edge 40 pairs a slim, light design and fast OLED screen with smooth performance and quick charging. Its cameras and the update policy reported in 2023 are the key compromises.

The Motorola Edge 40’s appeal is easy to understand: it is unusually slim and light, has a 144Hz OLED screen, performs smoothly in demanding games, and charges quickly. But its cameras are merely competent, and the software-support promise reported at launch was short. Henry Burrell’s Tech Advisor review, published May 22, 2023, makes the Edge 40 a better fit for buyers who prize handling, display and charging than for those prioritizing photography or long-term updates.

What the Edge 40 review says at a glance

Burrell reviewed the Motorola Edge 40 as a mid-range phone with an unusually polished feel, rather than a device without compromises. The review’s central verdict was that the slim, lightweight build, good screen and software were strong points, while camera quality and update longevity were the two shortcomings. The assessment below reflects that May 2023 review, not a current test or a claim about today’s availability.

Why the design and screen stand out

A light, thin build with water resistance

The review lists dimensions of 158.4 × 72 × 7.6mm and a weight of 167g. Those figures help explain why handling was central to its positive impression: the Edge 40 is notably light and thin for a phone with a 6.55-inch display. The review also notes vegan-leather finishes on the black and green models, alongside an IP68 rating.

A fast OLED panel with flexible refresh settings

The 2400 × 1080 OLED display supports HDR10+ and a maximum 144Hz refresh rate; the review also lists 360Hz touch sampling. Burrell described it as bright and well calibrated. Users could choose 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz or an automatic setting that shifts between 60Hz and 120Hz. The higher refresh ceiling is a draw for smooth scrolling and supported games, though it is not the only setting available.

Performance is a strength, based on the reviewer’s use

The reviewed configuration pairs a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Burrell found ordinary use smooth and reported good results playing Call of Duty Mobile and Asphalt 9. Those are review observations, not independent benchmarks or a guarantee of performance in every game or workload.

The review lists Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and 5G connectivity. Storage is fixed at 256GB in the listed configuration, with no microSD card expansion, so buyers who keep large offline libraries should account for that limit.

The cameras are the main image-quality compromise

The rear system consists of a 50MP f/1.4 main camera with optical image stabilization and a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide with a 120-degree field of view and macro mode. The front camera is 32MP. In Burrell’s assessment, the main camera performed best in daylight, but processing could oversharpen photos and zoomed images showed limited detail. The ultrawide was serviceable, though enlarged shots revealed noise and a loss of detail. The selfie camera was adequate for casual selfies, group photos and video calls.

For buyers who put camera quality first, the review points to the Google Pixel 7a as a stronger camera choice for less at the time, and says the Pixel 7 had better cameras still. Those are comparisons from the 2023 review, not current pricing or a fresh side-by-side test. It also names the Samsung Galaxy A54, OnePlus Nord 2T and Pixel 7 Pro, but does not establish a current ranking across all of them.

Battery life and charging

The review lists a 4400mAh battery and says the phone lasted a full day in ordinary use, with faster drain under heavy use. Its reported standard battery-test result was 8 hours 51 minutes; that is a result from Tech Advisor’s review, not an independently reproduced or universal measure of endurance.

Charging was a more decisive positive. With the included 68W wired charger, Burrell reported charging from empty to 47% in 15 minutes and 87% in 30 minutes. The phone also supports 15W Qi wireless charging, which the reviewer says worked on Qi pads.

Update support is a serious ownership trade-off

Tech Advisor reported that Motorola promised two Android platform updates and three years of security patches for the Edge 40. Burrell considered that short for a phone priced above £500/€500 at the time. This describes the policy reported in the May 2023 review; it does not establish the phone’s current patch status or whether the support period has since ended. Check Motorola’s current support information for the specific regional model before buying a used or discounted handset.

Who should consider the Motorola Edge 40?

  • It may suit you if you value a light, thin phone, a high-refresh OLED display, smooth general performance, fast wired charging and Qi wireless charging.
  • Look elsewhere if you want the strongest camera in the price range, expandable storage, or a longer update commitment than the review reported.
  • Compare prices carefully before treating the Edge 40 as a value buy. Burrell quoted £529.99 in the UK and €599 in Europe in 2023; those are historical review prices, not current offers. The review also described the OnePlus Nord 2T as a lower-priced alternative at that time.

At publication, Tech Advisor said the phone was available in the UK and several European countries. That does not establish current stock, pricing, or regional variants.
