It will set the grid for Saturday’s Sprint; Saturday’s Grand Prix qualifying will continue to set the grid for Sunday’s race. In other words, the two races will have separate qualifying routes and separate grids.
How MotoGP qualifying will work in 2027
The key change is that Friday Sprint qualifying will not determine the Sunday Grand Prix grid. The official MotoGP announcement describes a championship-wide format from 2027, with one qualifying route for the Sprint and another for the Grand Prix.

What the 2027 MotoGP weekend schedule includes
MotoGP’s announced plan changes the shape of Friday and Saturday, while also specifying a Sunday pitlane opening in place of MotoGP Warm Up track time.
Friday: practice and Sprint qualifying
- FP1: 45 minutes.
- FP2: 30 minutes, and explicitly not timed for entry into another session.
- Sprint qualifying: 15 minutes to set Saturday’s Sprint grid.
Saturday: Grand Prix qualifying and Sprint
- FP3: 20 minutes.
- Grand Prix Q1: 15 minutes, with all riders taking part.
- Grand Prix Q2: 15 minutes; the top 12 from Q1 advance.
- MotoGP Sprint: starts from the grid determined by Friday’s Sprint qualifying.
Sunday: races and the Grand Prix
The announced Sunday plan has Moto3 and Moto2 races before the MotoGP Grand Prix. Before the Grand Prix, the pitlane opens for 10 minutes to allow multiple sighting laps. MotoGP says this replaces the MotoGP Warm Up track-time slot. The Grand Prix grid comes from Saturday’s Grand Prix Q1 and Q2, not Friday’s Sprint qualifying.

What “permanent” means here
MotoGP says the Sprint qualifying format will apply at every round from 2027, so it is a standardized championship-wide format rather than a one-off or a change limited to selected events. That does not mean the sporting rules can never be changed in the future. The announcement confirms the schedule and session lengths; it is not a substitute for the detailed regulations.
Motorsport.com reported on 7 October 2026 that teams approved the change in a vote at the Red Bull Ring. That provides context for the decision, while the championship announcement is the primary source for the published format.

Why MotoGP says it is making the change
MotoGP says the format is intended to add stakes and spectacle while balancing track time for riders, teams and factories. Those are the organizer’s stated aims, not evidence that the new format will produce a particular sporting or viewing outcome.
