Motion blur smears moving content; chromatic aberration separates colors around image details. They are different visual effects, so judge them separately in the game you play rather than treating them as a single graphics setting. Whether either looks better is a matter of preference and the game’s intended style.
What does motion blur do in games?
Motion blur softens or streaks detail associated with fast movement. In film, the effect comes from an object changing position while the camera shutter is open; games use blur to evoke that movement. Depending on the game, it may be associated with fast-moving objects, camera movement, or both. Autodesk explains the effect in its motion-blur overview.

The trade-off is visual: blur can make motion feel more pronounced or cinematic, but it can also make moving details look smeared. Autodesk notes that motion blur is controversial among gamers and that many disable it when the game allows. That is a qualitative observation, not a measured preference statistic or a rule for every player.

Chromatic aberration creates color separation or fringing rather than movement smearing. Epic Games explains that different wavelengths of light can refract at slightly different angles, so they do not focus together. In a game image, this can appear as colored edges or a stylized treatment of focal planes. EA describes the setting in its game menu as color correction on various focal planes. See Epic’s chromatic-aberration explanation and EA’s Jedi: Survivor PC settings reference.

Motion blur vs. chromatic aberration
| Comparison | Motion blur | Chromatic aberration |
|---|---|---|
| Main visual change | Moving content appears blurred or streaked. | Colors appear separated or fringed around image details. |
| What to look for | Smearing during object or camera movement. | Colored edges or a change in how focal planes are rendered. |
| Typical control | May be a toggle or an adjustable amount, depending on the game and platform. | May be a separate toggle; controls vary by game and platform. |
| Best way to decide | Compare whether the movement effect suits your preference in that game. | Compare whether the color-fringing effect suits the game’s look to you. |
The effects are not synonyms: one changes the appearance of movement, while the other changes color alignment. A game can offer both, and its controls may be independent.
How to compare the settings in your game
- Find a scene with movement and high-contrast edges, such as a character moving past a bright background.
- Change only the motion-blur setting. Watch moving objects and camera pans for smearing, then decide whether you prefer the result.
- Restore your preferred motion-blur setting, then change only chromatic aberration. Look for colored separation around edges or other changes in the image.
- Keep, reduce, or disable each effect independently if the game offers separate controls.
This is a practical visual comparison, not a performance test. The cited settings references document image controls; they do not establish that switching either effect on or off improves frame rate.

Examples of how games expose the controls
Settings and defaults below are examples from the named PC references, not universal defaults. Availability and labels may differ on other platforms or after game updates.
| Game and reference | Motion blur | Chromatic aberration |
|---|---|---|
| Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, PC — EA | On/off control; described as the blurring effect during certain movements. The documented default is On. | On/off control; described as color correcting on various focal planes. The documented default is On. |
| Battlefield 2042, PC — EA | Slider ranging from 0 to 100. | Separate on/off control; the documented default is On. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 — Insomniac | Insomniac describes blur from camera movement and fast-moving objects; lower settings produce less blur and higher settings more apparent blur. | Listed separately from motion blur. |
For platform-specific controls, consult EA’s Jedi: Survivor PC visual settings and Battlefield 2042 PC settings, and Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 graphics settings.

Should you turn either effect off?
There is no universal on/off recommendation established by these sources. Start with the effect that bothers you—or the one you are most curious about—then assess it separately in the game’s own scenes. If motion detail is your concern, compare motion blur; if color fringing is your concern, compare chromatic aberration. Your choice can differ from one game to another, and the controls may offer different levels of adjustment.
