Motion blur smears image detail in the direction of movement; chromatic aberration separates colors and creates colored fringes around edges. They imitate different camera effects, so changing one will not remove the other. If either look distracts you, adjust its own setting in the game—when available—and compare the results separately.
What motion blur does
Motion blur softens or streaks imagery as the camera or objects move. It imitates a camera recording motion over an exposure: detail is blurred along the direction of movement. Unity describes its effect as blurring the image in the direction of camera movement, and documents controls such as shutter angle and sample count. A larger shutter angle means a longer simulated exposure and stronger blur; sample count affects quality and performance. These are engine controls, not labels every game necessarily provides. Unity’s Motion Blur documentation explains the effect and controls.

Motion blur can also be used to make speed more legible or give a game a camera-like, cinematic presentation. NVIDIA’s GPU Gems 3 chapter on motion blur describes it as a way to simulate speed and notes that it can smooth a game’s appearance, particularly at 30 frames per second or less. That is a design rationale, not a guarantee that blur will improve the image or suit every player.
Why its appearance can vary
Games and engines do not all calculate blur the same way. NVIDIA’s described post-processing method estimates per-pixel velocity using depth and frame information, then samples along the velocity direction. Camera movement can blur otherwise static scene elements; moving objects may need separate velocity data. The computation and resulting image depend on the implementation, so motion blur has no single fixed performance cost.

What chromatic aberration does
Chromatic aberration imitates a lens that does not bring all colors to the same point. Its typical game effect is color separation: colored fringes appear around image details, especially edges. Unlike motion blur, it does not primarily smear detail in the direction of movement. Unity HDRP documentation describes the lens effect, while Epic’s Unreal Editor for Fortnite documentation describes RGB color separation.
Engine implementations can offer controls such as intensity, quality, a spectral lookup texture for custom fringe colors, or a start offset. Those details describe the documented engines; they should not be assumed to exist in a particular game’s menu. The visible result is a lens-like or stylized color fringe, which some players may want and others may find distracting.

Motion blur vs. chromatic aberration
| Question | Motion blur | Chromatic aberration |
|---|---|---|
| What changes on screen? | Detail softens or streaks along camera or object movement. | Colors separate, producing colored fringing around image details. |
| What does it imitate? | A camera exposure capturing a moving view or subject. | A lens that does not focus all colors at the same point. |
| Why might a game use it? | To communicate speed or create a cinematic camera effect. | To add a lens-like or stylized camera artifact. |
| Documented engine controls | Unity documents shutter angle and sample count; NVIDIA discusses velocity-based sampling and object motion data. | Unity HDRP documents intensity, quality, and spectral color options; Epic documents intensity and start offset. |
| Possible image trade-off | Moving detail may become softer or streaked. | Edges may gain colored fringes instead of a clean, neutral appearance. |
The table summarizes documented engine behavior, not a promise that a retail game uses those exact controls. Whether either effect looks better is a matter of preference and the game’s implementation.
Can you change the two effects separately?
Sometimes. The PC visual-settings page for EA’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order lists Motion Blur and Chromatic Aberration as separate switches. That is one concrete example, not evidence that every game offers separate toggles. Other games may provide sliders, bundle post-processing settings, use different names, or omit a control.

- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Look in the individual game’s graphics, display, or post-processing settings. If the game offers separate controls, changing them one at a time makes it easier to identify which effect is responsible for a visual change.
Which effect should you turn off?
If movement looks too soft or streaked
Reduce or disable motion blur, if the game allows it. Compare while panning the camera and moving through the scene, since the effect is tied to movement. This is a preference-based adjustment, not a universal recommendation.

If colored edges are distracting
Lower chromatic aberration intensity or switch it off if that control is available. Reducing the setting directly reduces the simulated color separation.

You may prefer to keep some blur, some color fringing, or both. Their appeal depends on the game, display, and viewer; neither effect is inherently the right choice for everyone.

Do these effects affect frame rate?
There is no universal frame-rate gain to promise from disabling either effect. Unity documents that motion-blur sample count affects performance, and NVIDIA’s post-processing discussion explains implementation costs and trade-offs. Those facts do not establish how much performance a specific game gains—or whether it gains any—on a particular device and setting. Treat performance as game- and implementation-specific rather than assuming either toggle is a reliable optimization.
