To check whether text contains hidden Unicode characters, inspect its individual code points and Unicode names—not just how it looks on screen. A string can include characters that render as invisible or zero-width, and some have legitimate roles in writing, text shaping, or layout.
Why normal-looking text can contain hidden characters
A character is part of the text whether or not your current font or application draws a visible glyph for it. The Unicode Consortium explains that default-ignorable characters may render completely invisible and take no width when a rendering system does not explicitly support them. Appearance alone therefore cannot confirm that two strings contain the same characters. Unicode’s FAQ on displaying unsupported characters describes this behavior.

“Hidden Unicode” is not one character or one property. Examples include U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE, U+200C ZERO WIDTH NON-JOINER, U+200D ZERO WIDTH JOINER, U+2060 WORD JOINER, U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN, variation selectors, and bidirectional controls. These are not all interchangeable, and their effect depends on the character and context.

Invisible format characters are not the same thing as whitespace. Unicode’s FAQ treats the White_Space property separately and says no White_Space characters have the Default_Ignorable_Code_Point property.

Inspect code points, names, and relevant properties
Use a character inspector or program that reports each character’s code point and Unicode name. For example, a useful result identifies a character as U+200B ZERO WIDTH SPACE, rather than merely highlighting a blank-looking position. If your task requires more than identification, examine relevant Unicode properties too: a character category alone is not a complete test for whether something is hidden or suspicious. The Unicode Character Database and its properties are documented in Unicode Standard Annex #44.
For an already-decoded string in Python, this short snippet prints each character’s index, code point, name, and general category:

print(index, codepoint, name, category)The output is an inventory, not a security verdict. Python’s standard-library category does not by itself identify every relevant Unicode property, establish intent, or determine whether a character is wrong in context.
Review these characters carefully
- Format characters: zero-width spaces, joiners, and word joiners can affect word segmentation, shaping, or line breaking.
- Soft hyphens: U+00AD SOFT HYPHEN may be unobtrusive unless a line break or particular rendering makes its effect visible.
- Variation selectors: these can affect how a preceding character is displayed.
- Bidirectional controls: marks, embeddings, overrides, and isolates influence text direction and display order. U+202E RIGHT-TO-LEFT OVERRIDE changes how subsequent text is treated for direction. Unicode’s Bidirectional Algorithm (UAX #9) says overrides “are to be avoided wherever possible, because of security concerns.”
- Unexpected characters for the language or purpose: treat these as a prompt to inspect context, not as proof of malicious content.
These are practical review cues, not a claim that one category or regular expression captures every hidden or risky character. Unicode property data provides a more reliable basis for character-level checks, while the text’s language and purpose determine whether a finding is actually unexpected.

Use a safe inspection workflow
- Keep an untouched copy. Preserve the original string before editing or cleaning it.
- Reveal each character’s identity. Use an inspector that lists code points and names, or print them with a short program such as the Python example above.
- Investigate findings in context. Pay attention to format characters, unusual spaces, soft hyphens, variation selectors, and bidi controls. Consult Unicode property information when the distinction matters.
- Decide whether to retain or remove each character. Do not strip every invisible character automatically: joiners and directional marks can be legitimate in ordinary writing systems and layouts.
- Verify any edited copy. Inspect the resulting text again and compare it with the preserved original, so a cleanup has not changed intended shaping, word boundaries, or direction.
Finding a character does not show who inserted it or why. Unicode standards describe character properties and behavior, not authorship.

A “show hidden” mode can display an explicit marker for characters that otherwise have no visible glyph. Unicode 18.0 discusses this approach, including making misplaced format controls and variation selectors visible where appropriate; see Chapter 5 of the Unicode 18.0.0 standard.

For a dependable inspection experience, show code points and names, expose relevant properties such as bidi controls, and let users review findings before removal. Avoid presenting every invisible character as an error: some are necessary for correct text behavior.
