Tarstones add melee, sidearm, or support effects in Mortal Shell II. To upgrade them, unlock Tarstone upgrades at the Tarforge with Etching Needles. The full effect list available in public sources comes from an Open Beta client-text snapshot, not a verified current retail build, so use each stone’s in-game tooltip for its exact effect and values.
What Tarstones do
Tarstones can alter attacks, add passive bonuses, or provide support effects. A dated Open Beta client-text snapshot groups its records into 35 melee, 33 sidearm, and four support entries. It records 72 named Tarstones across 73 client records; these are counts of that beta text, not a confirmed count of current retail items.

The snapshot includes both passive modifiers and abilities that consume Resolve. Any unresolved “[value]” text in that client data is a localization placeholder, not a usable number. Since the list is build-specific, check the current in-game tooltip before relying on a particular effect or magnitude.
Melee Tarstones
Examples in the beta text include weapon infusions such as Curse, Lightning, and Burn; passive bonuses to critical chance, critical damage, Resolve gain, or damage at low health; and Resolve-consuming attacks such as charged attacks, shockwaves, and multi-target strikes.

Sidearm Tarstones
Sidearm effects in the snapshot include piercing projectiles, splash damage, damage over time, critical modifiers, multiple projectiles, and effects that knock back or pull targets. Some entries add elemental infusions that consume Resolve.
Support Tarstones
The four support records include effects described as increasing Gloom or Coin from slain foes, reducing damage, or improving Riposte damage. Those descriptions come from beta client text; the snapshot does not establish their current retail strength.

How Tarstone upgrades work
- Unlock Tarstone upgrades: obtain Etching Needles, the Tarforge item identified as unlocking Tarstone upgrades.
- Use the Tarforge: once upgrades are unlocked, use the Tarforge to upgrade Tarstones. Check the current game interface for the available upgrade and its cost.
- Plan around the current tooltip: compare the stone’s effect and any displayed cost or level change in your build. Public sources do not establish a complete current table of Tarstone costs, XP thresholds, or per-level effect magnitudes.
The official Mortal Shell II Week 1 Update says Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite, allowing all Shells and Tarstones to be upgraded in a single playthrough. It also says broken Tarstones yield more Tarcores, and that Merrick’s stock can include Tarstones and Tarcores as progression advances. These changes describe the economy and availability, not a complete item-by-item cost guide.

Fragile Tarstones and Tarcores
The Week 1 Update introduced Fragile Tarstones, which break after losing durability and yield a Tarcore when they break. The update says Justicar’s Stone and Gloombound Stone became fragile, gained stronger passive and on-break effects, and could be found multiple times. It also describes compensatory Tarcores for existing saves whose stones had already been leveled.

Which Tarstones are worth upgrading?
There is no substantiated universal ranking in the available sources. The useful choice depends on your weapon, build, and the effect you want. Compare stones using these criteria:
- Compatibility: check whether the stone applies to melee or sidearm use, or provides support.
- Resolve use: weigh an active ability’s Resolve cost against a passive effect that does not require activating an attack.
- Combat role: decide whether you need damage or status application, control and stagger, or defense.
- Your current build: read the tooltip in your current game version and judge the effect in the context of your weapon and setup.
What the balance notes confirm
Balance Patch 1 names five Tarstones as buffed: Parasitic Stone, Grudge Stone, Bulwark Stone, Clerik’s Stone, and Squall Stone. The notes describe Bulwark Stone’s damage reduction as increased significantly, but provide no percentage. For the other four, they confirm a buff without stating the new values. Those notes therefore do not support a precise numerical comparison or a definitive best-stone ranking.

The available location routes are labeled Open Beta and cover only a subset of stones. They are historical beta information, not a guarantee of current retail locations. Confirm a route in a current game build before relying on it.
