The following ranking is the independent Mortal Shell 2 Hub guide’s assessment, marked updated August 24, 2026. It describes its placements as an editorial usability ranking, not a developer judgment or a universal measure of damage.

Which weapon should you try first?
Axatana for flexibility
The guide places Axatana in S tier as an adaptable choice for bosses and crowds. It is the clearest starting point if you want one weapon to test across different situations rather than choose for a single specialized role. The tier label alone does not establish that it has the highest damage or is best for every build.

Axe & Dagger for quick pressure
The guide’s other S-tier pick is Axe & Dagger, described as a fast, multi-hit option and an early choice. Consider it if you prefer shorter attack commitments and repeated hits. Its ranking does not mean it is the right fit if you favor slower, heavier attacks.
The Iconoclast if it is already working
The Iconoclast is listed in A tier as a reliable all-round starter. If you have invested in it and are handling encounters comfortably, there is no reason to switch just because another weapon appears higher on this particular list. Compare actual feel and upgrade state before spending scarce materials.

- Black Needle: consider it if you value reach and a safer learning experience.
- Great Martyr’s Blade: a heavy-attack option for openings where you can commit to a punish.
- Veteran’s Battle Axe: broad swings may suit exploration.
- Clockwork Scythe: its arcs are presented as useful for clearing packs.
- Obsidian Hammer: the guide marks it as a specialist choice because of its commitment and narrower build fit; a later balance pass increased its damage.
Why patch date matters
Cold Symmetry’s official Week 1 update reports a balance pass for Obsidian Hammer that made it hit substantially harder, increased Great Martyr’s Blade damage, and adjusted Axatana’s weapon ability. Those changes are enough to make older beta rankings a poor substitute for checking current notes. The cited update does not give a numerical damage comparison, so it cannot establish a new universal order among these weapons.
The official game description emphasizes stamina-free combat, posture-breaking tactics, weapon upgrades, exploration, and taking possession of warriors. It says: “Mortal Shell II’s combat system is unrestricted by stamina, allowing players to exploit multiple tactics to shatter enemy posture and strike critically.” In practical terms, weapon choice is about more than a static tier: reach, attack commitment, multi-hit speed, shell and build pairing, and the opening an enemy gives you all matter. PlayStation’s 2026 listing reports more than 80 dungeons, adding further reason to weigh both exploration and encounter-specific performance.

How to choose without wasting upgrade materials
- Decide what you need the weapon to do. Choose a priority such as quick repeated hits, reach, broad crowd coverage, or heavy attacks that punish a clear opening.
- Test before investing. The guide advises trying a weapon before spending scarce upgrade materials. Compare its move set and commitment with the weapon you already use.
