To play Mortal Kombat 11 with two people on one system, connect a compatible controller for each player, open the game’s local or versus mode, and have Player 2 join when prompted. Then choose fighters and start the match. Local two-player play is listed for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch; the exact menu labels and join button can vary by platform.
Set up a two-player match on one system
- Connect both controllers. Make sure each is paired with the same console or connected to the PC, and that the system recognizes them as separate inputs. On Switch, Nintendo says that multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.
- Open Mortal Kombat 11’s local or versus mode. Choose the option for a match on the same system. The official store listings confirm local player support, but do not document one menu sequence that applies to every platform and game version.
- Join as Player 2. At the local/versus screen, press the join or confirm input shown on screen using the second controller. There is no single verified button prompt for every platform.
- Select fighters and begin. Once both players are active, choose characters and start the match.
PlayStation lists the game for 1–2 players (PlayStation); Xbox lists local multiplayer for 2–2 (Xbox). Those listings establish local two-player support, not identical menus or controls across systems.

Choose the right local mode on Nintendo Switch
Switch distinguishes between playing together on one console and connecting separate systems over local wireless. For a same-console match, choose single-system play. Nintendo UK lists single-system play for 1–2 players, local wireless for 2, and online play for 2–8 (Nintendo UK).
Each player needs a compatible controller. WB Games lists options for Switch that include a dual Joy-Con grip, a horizontally held Joy-Con, a Switch Pro Controller, a GameCube Controller and compatible fight sticks; the supported setup depends on the platform and mode (WB Games Support).

What to check if Player 2 cannot join
- Confirm the second input is recognized. Check the console or PC’s controller settings before returning to the local/versus screen.
- Use the prompt shown in the game. Press the displayed join or confirm input on Player 2’s controller; prompts can differ by platform.
- Check player assignment. If both players control one fighter or Player 2 does not appear, make sure the controllers are assigned as separate players or devices in system settings, then revisit local versus.
- On PC, check your input device. WB Games says PC keyboard controls are fully remappable and also documents alternative gameplay devices, including arcade-style fight sticks and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. This does not mean every device configuration works identically in every mode.
Local play is different from online or cloud play
The same-system local modes described above do not require an online membership. Online play is separate: PlayStation says online play is optional and requires a PlayStation account for online features; Xbox lists online multiplayer separately and requires a qualifying Game Pass plan for console online multiplayer; Nintendo requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. Those conditions apply to online play, not the listed same-system local match.
Xbox lists cloud gaming availability, but its game listing does not establish that two local controller inputs work in a cloud session. Do not assume that a two-player local setup will work when streaming the game.

Controller options on PC and consoles
Use controllers supported by your platform and recognized as separate player inputs. On PC, the keyboard controls can be remapped, according to WB Games Support. The support page also names arcade-style fight sticks and the Xbox Adaptive Controller as alternative gameplay devices. Compatibility depends on the system and configuration, so check that both inputs appear separately before starting a match.
