To crop an image to a specific aspect ratio, open its Crop tool, choose or enter the target ratio, reposition the crop frame around the content you want to keep, then apply and save. A 1:1 crop is square, 4:3 is a common photo shape, and 16:9 is widescreen. The ratio fixes the frame’s shape—not where the subject sits inside it.
What an aspect-ratio crop changes
An aspect ratio expresses the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. Choosing 1:1, 4:3, or 16:9 constrains the crop frame to that shape. You still control which part of the image appears by moving the frame over the image.

Cropping and resizing are different operations. A crop changes which area is visible or retained; resizing changes the image’s dimensions. Stretching an image to force a different shape can distort it, so use a crop control when the goal is a new aspect ratio. Canva explains the distinction between cropping and resizing in its crop and resize guidance.
How to crop an image to a specific ratio
- Open the original and select Crop. The tool may be in a photo editor, design app, or phone’s editing screen.
- Choose the required ratio. Select a preset such as 1:1, 4:3, or 16:9, or enter the ratio if the editor allows it. If you also need exact pixel dimensions, use a width-and-height control where available; Photoshop supports ratio and width/height inputs in its Crop tool workflow.
- Frame the subject. Move the crop area so faces, text, logos, and other important details remain inside it. Adjust the frame handles if needed; a ratio-aware crop keeps its proportions.
- Check the edges. A fixed shape may leave some original image area outside the crop, particularly when the source image has a different orientation or proportions.
- Apply and save. Use a copy or a nondestructive setting if you want to preserve the original framing.
Which ratio should you choose?

These ratios describe the crop’s shape, not a guaranteed pixel size. If a destination requires both a ratio and exact dimensions, check both requirements before exporting.

Crop in common photo and design apps
Photoshop desktop
Select the Crop tool with C. In the Options bar, choose an aspect-ratio preset or enter width and height. Reposition the image inside the crop border, adjust the border handles, then press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS. Adobe’s Crop tool instructions include presets such as 1:1 and 16:9.
Photoshop also has a Delete Cropped Pixels option. Whether cropped areas remain available for later adjustment depends on that setting.

GIMP 2.10
Make Tool Options visible through Windows → Dockable Dialogs → Tool Options. Activate the Crop tool, enable Fixed, and set its dropdown to Aspect Ratio. Enter a ratio such as 1:1, draw the crop area, and adjust its corners. Press Enter or double-click inside the crop to finish. These labels follow the GIMP 2.10 manual; other versions may differ.

Google Photos for Android
Open the photo, tap Edit → Crop → Aspect ratio, adjust the frame, and tap the checkmark. Tap Save to apply edits to the original where supported, or choose Save as copy to create a new edited photo. Google’s Android photo-editing instructions note that availability can depend on device features and requirements.

Snapseed
Open the Crop filter, pick a preset, reposition or resize the crop frame while keeping the selected ratio, and tap Apply. Snapseed lists Free, Original, 1:1, DIN, 3:2, 4:3, 5:4, 7:5, and 16:9 among its crop choices. See its Crop help page.
Canva
Select the image or element and choose Crop. For an element that is not already in a frame, select a crop aspect ratio, adjust the handles to control what remains visible, and choose Done. Canva says cropping hides part of an element, while resizing changes the dimensions of the entire element. Its pixel width and height controls relate to resizing, not to selecting a crop ratio. Keep the original if you may need to change the crop
Saving behavior depends on the app. Google Photos for Android offers Save as copy for a separate edited photo. Canva says cropped areas are hidden and can be adjusted later. Photoshop’s Delete Cropped Pixels setting determines whether the cropped-away data is retained. If you are unsure how an editor handles crops, save a copy before applying the edit.
