Montblanc Summit 2 Review: Does the First 3100 Watch Change Anything?

The Montblanc Summit 2 arrived with more pressure on its shoulders than most Wear OS watches. As one of the first models powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100, it was expected to show whether Google’s smartwatch platform could finally feel faster, last longer, and compete more convincingly with the Apple Watch and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch lineup.

It also carries the weight of the Montblanc name, which means premium materials, classic watch styling, and a price that puts it well above many technically similar smartwatches. That makes the Summit 2 more than a chipset test; it is also a question of whether luxury design and branding can make Wear OS feel like a truly high-end experience.

This review looks at how the Summit 2 performs in daily use, from design and display quality to fitness tracking, software responsiveness, battery life, and overall value. The central question is simple: does the Snapdragon Wear 3100 actually change the Wear OS story, or is the Summit 2 mostly a beautiful watch held back by familiar limitations?

Design and Build Quality

The Montblanc Summit 2 makes its luxury positioning obvious before the screen even turns on. Instead of chasing the ultra-thin, fitness-first look of many smartwatches, it borrows heavily from traditional watch design: a round stainless steel case, pronounced lugs, a knurled crown, and two physical pushers on the right side. The result is a smartwatch that looks closer to a premium mechanical watch than a piece of wearable tech, which is exactly the point. At 42mm, it is also more wearable than the original Summit, making it better suited to smaller wrists without losing the substantial feel expected from a Montblanc product.

Build quality is the strongest part of the watch. The case feels dense and well-machined, the buttons have a reassuring click, and the rotating crown adds a practical way to scroll through Wear OS without constantly swiping across the display. Montblanc offers several case finishes, including stainless steel, black DLC-coated steel, and titanium on select versions, along with a wide choice of leather, rubber, and metal straps. The standard 22mm strap system also helps, because owners are not locked into a proprietary band ecosystem.

Premium materials, familiar smartwatch compromises

The Summit 2 wears like a luxury watch, but it still has the thickness and presence of a smartwatch. It is not overly bulky, yet it sits taller than many traditional dress watches, so it may catch on tight shirt cuffs. The sapphire crystal is a welcome inclusion at this price, offering better scratch resistance than the glass used on many mainstream Wear OS competitors. Water resistance is rated at 5 ATM, which is suitable for rain, hand washing, and pool use, though the leather straps are obviously not the best match for swimming or sweaty workouts.

  • Case size: 42mm, more manageable than the first-generation Summit.
  • Materials: stainless steel, DLC-coated steel, or titanium depending on model.
  • Crystal: sapphire, a proper luxury-watch touch.
  • Controls: rotating crown plus two programmable side buttons.
  • Straps: standard 22mm bands, with leather, rubber, and metal options.

The design succeeds because it does not try to hide what it is. This is a smartwatch for someone who wants Wear OS features in a case that feels at home next to a mechanical timepiece. Still, the Montblanc badge does a lot of work here. The Summit 2 looks and feels more refined than most Wear OS watches, but the core design language is not radically different from other round smartwatches with metal cases and side buttons. Its advantage is in finishing, proportions, materials, and brand presence rather than a fundamentally new approach to smartwatch hardware.

Display and Everyday Usability

The Montblanc Summit 2 uses a 1.2-inch circular AMOLED display with a 390 x 390 resolution, and in day-to-day use it looks sharp, saturated, and appropriately premium. Text is crisp enough for notifications, complications are easy to read at a glance, and watch faces with fine detailing benefit from the dense panel. The display is not oversized, which helps the watch maintain a traditional 42mm case profile, but it also means dense Wear OS screens can feel cramped compared with larger sport-focused smartwatches.

Outdoor visibility is generally solid, especially when brightness is raised, though direct sunlight can still expose one of Wear OS’s familiar limitations: checking small notification text while walking outside is not always effortless. The always-on ambient mode is useful and well suited to a luxury-style watch because it keeps the Summit 2 looking like a watch rather than a blank puck on the wrist. Ambient faces are dimmer and simplified, but they preserve enough character to make the device feel more polished in meetings, restaurants, or formal settings.

Controls and daily interaction

The Summit 2 combines the touchscreen with a rotating crown and two programmable pushers. This is one of its better usability choices. The crown makes scrolling through notifications, app lists, and settings more controlled than repeated swiping on a small screen, while the side buttons can be assigned to frequently used apps such as Google Fit, agenda, stopwatch, or a travel app. The buttons have a firmer, more watch-like feel than many cheaper Wear OS models, reinforcing the sense that Montblanc paid attention to the physical interface rather than relying entirely on touch.

  • Touch response: accurate for taps and swipes, though Wear OS can still require too many gestures for simple tasks.
  • Rotating crown: helpful for scrolling without covering the display with a finger.
  • Programmable buttons: genuinely useful if assigned to fitness, payments, or calendar functions.
  • Haptics: adequate for alerts, but not as refined as the best smartwatch vibration systems.

For everyday usability, the Summit 2 works best as a notification, calendar, payment, and quick-action device rather than a miniature phone replacement. Reading messages, rejecting calls, checking weather, controlling music, and using Google Pay are all convenient. Replying to messages is possible through voice dictation, canned responses, handwriting, or a tiny keyboard, but none of those methods feels elegant for anything beyond a short response. This is not unique to Montblanc; it is part of the broader Wear OS experience on a compact round display.

The watch is comfortable enough for all-day wear, and the relatively compact case makes a real difference compared with larger luxury smartwatches. Still, the premium design can clash with practical use depending on the strap. A leather strap looks appropriate with the case but is less ideal for workouts or hot weather, while rubber or nylon options make the watch more versatile but slightly reduce the dress-watch effect. As an everyday smartwatch, the Summit 2’s display and controls are among its strengths, but they do not transform Wear OS into something radically different. They make routine interactions smoother and more attractive, which matters, but the underlying interface still carries the same small-screen compromises.

Snapdragon Wear 3100 Performance

The Montblanc Summit 2 was notable at launch because it was among the first Wear OS watches to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform. On paper, that sounds like a generational leap over the older Wear 2100 chips found in many Android smartwatches. In daily use, however, the change is more modest. The Summit 2 feels smoother than many previous Wear OS watches, especially when waking the screen, opening the app drawer, swiping through tiles, and handling notifications, but it does not transform Wear OS into a completely new experience.

The main processor architecture still has a lot in common with the previous generation, so raw speed is not dramatically different. Apps can still take a moment to launch, Google Assistant can still hesitate before responding, and Play Store browsing on the watch remains slow enough that most people will avoid doing it often. The Summit 2 benefits from having 1GB of RAM, which helps reduce stutters and makes multitasking feel more stable, but the chipset alone is not a cure for Wear OS’s long-running responsiveness issues.

Where the Snapdragon Wear 3100 matters most is in efficiency and low-power operation. Qualcomm added a separate ultra-low-power co-processor designed to handle ambient watch functions without waking the main chip as often. That helps with always-on display behavior, basic sensor handling, and watch-face updates. On the Summit 2, the ambient mode looks better than on many older watches, with smoother second-hand movement on supported faces and more useful low-power presentation. This makes the watch feel more like a traditional timepiece when it is idle, which fits Montblanc’s positioning.

What improves in practice

  • General navigation: Swipes and menu transitions are usually fluid, with fewer pauses than older Wear OS models.
  • Always-on watch faces: The low-power mode is more polished and visually consistent, especially with analog-style faces.
  • Workout handling: The watch can track activity reliably, though GPS startup and fitness app loading are not instant.
  • Stability: With 1GB of RAM, the Summit 2 feels less cramped than watches with 512MB, particularly after installing extra apps.

There are still clear limits. The Summit 2 is not as fast or tightly integrated as an Apple Watch, and it does not feel as athletic or streamlined as Garmin or Polar devices when starting workouts and reviewing performance data. Voice commands are inconsistent, third-party Wear OS apps vary widely in quality, and some animations can still hitch when the watch is syncing, updating, or switching between heavier apps. The 3100 makes the platform more livable, but it does not erase the software bottlenecks around Google’s wearable ecosystem.

  • COMPATIBLE MODEL: This is a pack of 2 Straps, each 22 mm in width (Lug Width) and are compatible with Montblanc Summit 3.

The performance story is also tied to expectations. If you are coming from an older Wear 2100 watch, the Summit 2 feels like a cleaner, more refined version of the same idea. If you expect the first 3100 watch to deliver a major breakthrough in speed, battery endurance, and app responsiveness, it may feel underwhelming. Montblanc’s hardware gives the chip a premium shell and enough memory to show it at its best, but the underlying experience remains recognizably Wear OS: capable, attractive, occasionally sluggish, and still dependent on Google improving the platform around the silicon.

Battery Life and Charging

The Montblanc Summit 2 is powered by a 340mAh battery, and despite the arrival of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 3100, expectations need to stay realistic. This is still very much a one-day Wear OS smartwatch if you use it as intended. With notifications enabled, an always-on watch face, occasional Google Assistant use, heart-rate checks, app interactions, and some fitness tracking, the Summit 2 generally needs to go back on its charger by bedtime.

In lighter use, it can stretch beyond a full day, especially if you turn off the always-on display, reduce notification volume, and avoid GPS workouts. That said, the new chipset does not transform the experience into a multi-day smartwatch in the way some buyers might expect. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 is more efficient than the older Wear 2100 in specific low-power states, but Wear OS itself, the bright AMOLED display, and the compact battery size keep the Summit 2 from making a dramatic leap in endurance.

What the Snapdragon Wear 3100 changes

The most visible battery-related benefit is the improved ambient mode. The Summit 2 can show a more useful always-on watch face without drawing as much power as older Wear OS watches. Instead of a very basic monochrome standby screen, it can preserve color, complications, and a more traditional watch-like appearance while idle. This suits the Montblanc particularly well, because a luxury smartwatch should not look like a blank slab most of the day.

  • Typical mixed use: about one day of battery life.
  • Light use: potentially into the next morning, depending on settings.
  • Workout use with GPS: significantly faster drain.
  • Always-on display: more practical than before, but still affects runtime.

Montblanc also includes battery-saving modes that lean on the 3100’s low-power co-processor. These modes can extend standby time by limiting smart features and turning the watch into something closer to a digital timepiece. That can be useful when traveling or when you forget the charger, but it also undercuts the reason to own a premium Wear OS watch in the first place. If you have to disable the features that make it smart, the Summit 2 starts to feel less convincing as a luxury tech product.

Charging experience

Charging is handled through a magnetic dock, and the process is straightforward. The watch sits securely enough for a nightstand or desk, though it is still another proprietary charger to pack if you travel often. Charging speed is adequate rather than exceptional: a short top-up can get you through the evening, while a fuller charge is best handled overnight or during a morning routine. For most owners, daily charging becomes part of the ownership pattern.

The bigger issue is not that the Summit 2 performs badly for a Wear OS watch; it is that the high price raises the standard. At this level, buyers may reasonably expect the new processor to deliver a clear endurance breakthrough. Instead, the improvement is more subtle: better ambient watch faces, smarter low-power behavior, and slightly more refined efficiency. Those are welcome changes, but they do not remove the need for daily charging. The Summit 2’s battery life is acceptable within the Wear OS category, yet it does not meaningfully change the category’s biggest weakness.

Wear OS Features and Fitness Tracking

The Montblanc Summit 2 runs Wear OS in a familiar form: notifications, Google Assistant, Google Pay, Play Store apps, music controls, alarms, timers, calendar prompts, and customizable watch faces are all present. The experience is at its best when the watch is used as a polished extension of an Android phone, letting you triage messages, check directions, approve contactless payments, and glance at agenda items without reaching for your handset. Pairing with an iPhone is possible, but the feature set is more limited, especially around notifications and deeper app interaction.

Navigation is handled through the touchscreen, the rotating crown, and two programmable pushers. That hardware makes Wear OS feel more practical than it does on watches with touch-only control, particularly when scrolling through notifications or launching a favorite app. Google Assistant is accessible from the wrist, though responses and voice recognition can still feel dependent on connection quality. The Play Store gives the Summit 2 more flexibility than many fashion-focused smartwatches, but the Wear OS app ecosystem remains thinner than Apple’s and less fitness-focused than Garmin’s.

Health and workout tools

For fitness tracking, the Summit 2 includes core sensors such as a heart-rate monitor, accelerometer, gyroscope, altimeter, and GPS. That covers step counts, calories, heart-rate readings, basic activity goals, outdoor runs, cycling, and mapped workouts through Google Fit or compatible third-party apps. The built-in GPS is useful because it allows route tracking without carrying a phone, and the heart-rate sensor is adequate for casual workouts and daily wellness trends. It is not the watch to buy if you need highly granular training metrics, recovery coaching, advanced running dynamics, or multi-day outdoor tracking.

  • Google Fit: Tracks Move Minutes, Heart Points, workouts, steps, distance, and heart rate in a simple interface.
  • Built-in GPS: Supports phone-free route tracking for runs and walks, though battery drain rises quickly during GPS sessions.
  • Heart-rate monitoring: Suitable for general trends, less convincing for interval training or high-intensity sessions.
  • Third-party apps: Spotify, Strava, Telegram, and other Wear OS apps add flexibility, but quality varies by developer support.

Montblanc also adds a few brand-specific touches, including premium watch faces and lifestyle-oriented apps such as travel-focused tools. These extras fit the Summit 2’s identity as a luxury smartwatch rather than a dedicated sports watch. The case is stylish enough for business wear, and the software can be dressed up with classic analog faces in a way that cheaper Wear OS models often fail to match. Still, most of the actual smart features come from Google, not Montblanc, so the functional difference between this and a less expensive Wear OS watch is narrower than the price might suggest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fitness side follows the same pattern. It is capable enough for users who want everyday activity tracking, occasional workouts, and health snapshots in a refined package. It falls short for athletes who expect the accuracy, analytics, and battery endurance of purpose-built devices from Garmin, Polar, or Suunto. As a Wear OS watch, the Summit 2 is versatile and attractive; as a training tool, it is competent but not exceptional. Its strongest appeal is for someone who wants smartwatch convenience and light fitness tracking inside a case that looks more like a premium timepiece than a piece of gym equipment.

Price, Competition, and Verdict

The Montblanc Summit 2 was never meant to be judged purely as a spec-sheet bargain. Its price puts it far above most Wear OS watches, and that immediately changes the question from “is it good?” to “is it good enough to justify luxury-watch money?” In practical terms, the Summit 2 delivers a refined case, premium materials, strong finishing, and the cachet of the Montblanc name. What it does not deliver is a fundamentally different smartwatch experience from less expensive Wear OS models using the same platform.

Against mainstream competitors, the value gap is hard to ignore. Watches from Fossil Group, Mobvoi, and other Wear OS brands can offer similar notifications, Google Assistant, Google Pay, app support, heart-rate tracking, and comparable day-to-day software behavior for much less. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 gives the Summit 2 a more modern foundation than older Wear OS watches, but it does not transform the category. Performance is smoother than the worst of the previous generation, yet it still feels limited by Wear OS itself, and battery life remains closer to a daily charging routine than a multi-day breakthrough.

Where the Summit 2 makes the strongest case

  • Luxury build: The case finishing, tactile buttons, and overall presentation feel more premium than most smartwatch alternatives.
  • Compact design: Its size is more wearable than many oversized smartwatches, especially for users who want a dressier device.
  • Brand appeal: For buyers already interested in Montblanc accessories, the Summit 2 fits naturally alongside pens, leather goods, and traditional watches.
  • Full Wear OS access: It supports Google services, third-party apps, notifications, payments, and voice assistant features without requiring a Samsung or Apple ecosystem.

The harder comparison is with the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Watch lines. Apple’s watch remains the stronger choice for iPhone users thanks to deeper integration, better health features, richer apps, and more polished software. Samsung’s watches tend to offer better battery life and a more cohesive interface, particularly for Android users who do not need Google’s exact app ecosystem on the wrist. The Summit 2 competes less on capability and more on appearance, materials, and the appeal of wearing something that looks closer to a luxury timepiece than a tech product.

That makes the verdict fairly specific. If you want the best smartwatch for the money, the Montblanc Summit 2 is difficult to recommend. You can spend far less and get most of the same Wear OS functionality, or spend similar money and get a more capable smartwatch from Apple if you use an iPhone. If, however, you want a refined luxury-branded Wear OS watch and are comfortable paying a premium for design, craftsmanship, and Montblanc identity, the Summit 2 is one of the more convincing options in that niche. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 helps modernize it, but it does not change the fundamentals: this is a stylish luxury smartwatch first, and a value-focused tech purchase second.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Snapdragon Wear 3100 make the Montblanc Summit 2 noticeably faster?

The Summit 2 feels smoother than many older Wear OS watches, especially when opening apps, swiping through notifications, and using Google Assistant. However, the improvement is not dramatic enough to make Wear OS feel completely transformed. The chipset helps polish the experience, but software limitations still hold it back.

How long does the Montblanc Summit 2 battery actually last?

With typical use, including notifications, time checks, some fitness tracking, and always-on display enabled, the Summit 2 generally lasts about a day. You will likely need to charge it every night. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 adds better low-power modes, but it does not turn the watch into a multi-day device.

Is the Montblanc Summit 2 good for fitness tracking?

The Summit 2 covers basic fitness needs with heart-rate tracking, built-in GPS, Google Fit support, and activity tracking. It is fine for casual workouts and runs, but it is not as advanced as dedicated fitness watches from Garmin, Polar, or Suunto. Serious athletes may find the battery life, metrics, and training features limited.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Montblanc Summit 2 worth the luxury price?

The Summit 2 is best suited for buyers who value premium materials, Montblanc styling, and a traditional watch-like design as much as smartwatch features. From a technology standpoint, cheaper Wear OS watches and Apple Watch models offer similar or better functionality for less money. The price makes more sense if the brand and design are major parts of the appeal.

Should iPhone users buy the Montblanc Summit 2?

iPhone users can pair the Summit 2 with Wear OS, but the experience is more limited than it is on Android. Notifications work, but deeper integration, messaging, and app features are not as seamless as on an Apple Watch. If you use an iPhone, the Apple Watch is usually the more practical choice unless you strongly prefer the Montblanc design.

Bottom Line

The Montblanc Summit 2 is a beautifully made Wear OS smartwatch with genuine luxury appeal, a sharp display, and smoother day-to-day performance than many older Android watches. But the Snapdragon Wear 3100 does not transform the experience as much as expected, especially when battery life and Wear OS limitations still feel familiar.

If you want a premium fashion-forward smartwatch and value Montblanc’s design and materials, the Summit 2 can make sense. If you mainly want the best fitness tracking, longest battery life, or strongest value, a less expensive smartwatch is the smarter next step.
