Monster Hunter Rise With Friends: What to Know About Multiplayer

Join friends in Monster Hunter Rise with an online lobby, Join Request or Nintendo Switch local play, and check platform requirements before you hunt.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play Monster Hunter Rise with friends, join the same multiplayer lobby and take a Hub quest together. You can also open an eligible Hub quest to other players with a Join Request after it begins. Nintendo Switch players have an additional option: local wireless play with nearby players.

Choose how your group will connect

Mode When players join Connection Best for
Online lobby Before the group selects a hunt Internet Meeting up with friends to choose and start Hub quests
Join Request When the quest is accepted or after it has started Online only Letting other players join an eligible Hub quest in progress
Local play Before selecting a hunt Nearby Nintendo Switch consoles using local wireless Playing together in person without online multiplayer

Capcom describes the lobby and Join Request as the two multiplayer options. Switch local play is a separate option and does not support Join Requests. [Capcom Switch manual]

Check platform, version and service requirements

Before creating a lobby, make sure everyone has the same game version. Capcom’s manuals are platform-specific, and the sources do not establish one cross-play rule for every platform combination and edition. For the clearest setup, use the same platform family and confirm compatibility if players are on different hardware. Capcom’s PlayStation manual explicitly says PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5 players cannot play with users on other hardware. [Switch manual] [Steam manual] [PlayStation manual]

  • Nintendo Switch online: Internet access and a Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online features.
  • Steam: You need an internet connection and must be logged in to Steam.
  • PlayStation: The covered PlayStation manual requires internet access, PSN sign-in and PlayStation Plus.
  • Switch local play: Each player needs a Nintendo Switch console and a copy of the game; Nintendo lists local wireless play for one to four players.

These requirements are platform-specific; a subscription requirement for one platform should not be assumed to apply to another. [Capcom Switch manual] [Capcom Steam manual] [Capcom PlayStation manual] [Nintendo game listing]

  • The game will introduce magnamalo, a menacing new flagship monster, as well as other new monsters like the shape-shifting aknosom, the amphibious tetranadon, and more.
  • New hunting partners called palamutes can be personalized and used to ride across the terrain, providing players with all-new traveling and attack options.
  • In addition to the plethora of solo and multiplayer quests, the immersive story mode will task aspiring hunters with discovering the secrets behind the puzzling “rampage” events that threaten kamura village.

Join friends in an online lobby

  1. Open the Courier menu and choose Play Online. On Steam, make sure you are signed in to Steam as well.
  2. Create or find a lobby. One player can host a lobby. Friends can join through the friends list where supported, search conditions or a lobby ID; on Switch, Hunter Connect is another option.
  3. Gather up to four players. A lobby supports a maximum of four players.
  4. Accept a Hub quest together. Choose it from the Gathering Hub, or from Elgado Outpost if available in your game.

Village quests are solo-only, so choose a Hub quest when the group wants to hunt together. The platform manuals describe the lobby and quest options. [Switch manual] [Steam manual] [PlayStation manual]

Let others join an active quest with Join Request

Use Join Request when a Hub quest is starting or already underway and you want other players to be able to join it. Enable the request while accepting the quest, or select the option from the lobby start menu during a Hub quest. Other players can look for eligible quests at the Quest Board. Join Requests are online-only; they are unavailable during Switch local multiplayer. [Capcom Switch manual] [Capcom Steam manual] [Capcom PlayStation manual]
