Independent tests show several products performing strongly in specific test versions, while editorial rankings disagree about which one is the best overall. For many Mac owners, Apple’s built-in protections are a reasonable starting point; a third-party product makes sense when its extra web, ransomware, firewall, VPN, or management features match a specific need.
Do Macs need antivirus software?
Macs can be infected with malware, but third-party antivirus is not a universal requirement. macOS already combines protections including Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect. Apple says Gatekeeper checks apps, plug-ins, and installer packages downloaded outside the App Store under default settings. XProtect provides signature-based detection and removal, receives automatic security updates, and includes behavioral analysis.

Apple describes these protections as helping prevent malware from launching, block malware, and remediate malware that has executed. Its explanation is explicit: “macOS includes built-in antivirus technology called XProtect for the signature-based detection and removal of malware.” See Apple’s overview of malware protection in macOS and Apple’s guidance on safely opening apps.

A third-party product supplements those platform protections; it does not replace software updates, careful handling of links and downloaded files, or backups. Consider one if you want additional web or phishing controls, broader monitoring, protection for shared files, centralized management, or bundled tools. No antivirus can promise to prevent every infection, scam, or loss of data.

What did independent Mac antivirus tests find in 2026?
AV-TEST: nine home-user products on macOS Tahoe
In June 2026, AV-TEST evaluated nine home-user products on macOS Tahoe, using current product versions and allowing updates and cloud services. Its assessment focused on malware detection, false positives, and performance. Protection, performance, and usability were each scored out of six.
Seven tested versions received 6/6 in all three categories. ESET Security Ultimate 9.0 and F-Secure Total 26.6 scored 6/6 for protection and usability, and 5.5/6 for performance. These are results for the named versions and test setup, not guarantees for later releases or every Mac. See AV-TEST’s June 2026 Mac results.

AV-Comparatives: nine products, including free and Mac-focused options
AV-Comparatives’ 2026 review used patched macOS Tahoe and product versions current in April and May 2026. Its Mac-specific evaluation covered malware and potentially unwanted programs, and its report also discussed installation, interfaces, alerts, performance, and usability. It tested a total of 1,500 recent, representative malicious Mac samples; the lab notes this is a small sample count compared with Windows.

The products in that review were Avast One Free for Mac 26.4, AVG AntiVirus Free for Mac 20.7, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 10.3, CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise for Mac 7.36, ESET HOME Security Essential for macOS 9.0, Intego ONE Complete 1.2, Kaspersky Premium for Mac 26.0, Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac 26.3, and Trellix Endpoint Security (HX) for Mac 36.30. This is a different test from AV-TEST’s June evaluation, with different product editions and versions. Consult AV-Comparatives’ 2026 Mac Security Test & Review for its findings and methodology.

Which Mac antivirus should you shortlist?
Use lab results to identify products worth comparing, not to assume that products with similar scores offer identical features. The options below are grounded in the cited 2026 tests and product descriptions; they are not a claim of a universal winner.
| Option | What the 2026 evidence establishes | Who might shortlist it |
|---|---|---|
| Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac | Version 10.3 earned 6/6 in all three AV-TEST categories in June 2026 and appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 review. AV-Comparatives describes malware and ransomware protection, browser security extensions, chat protection, scan options, and a limited-data VPN. | Someone who wants a tested antivirus with several bundled security features and is willing to check whether those features suit their browsing and VPN needs. |
| Intego ONE Complete | Version 1.2 appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 review, which describes a Mac security application combining malware protection, a firewall, system optimization, and VPN. Macworld names Intego ONE its 2026 top pick; that is Macworld’s editorial judgment, not a lab consensus. | Someone looking for a Mac-focused suite and interested in the firewall and other included tools. |
| Norton | Norton 360 26.6 received 6/6 in all three AV-TEST categories in June 2026. Separately, AV-Comparatives reviewed Norton AntiVirus Plus for Mac 26.3 and describes malware protection, network threat prevention, and scam protection. These are different editions and should not be treated as the same tested product. | Someone comparing either the tested Norton 360 edition or the separately reviewed AntiVirus Plus for Mac edition, after confirming the features and terms of the exact product offered. |
| Avast One Free for Mac or AVG AntiVirus Free for Mac | Both appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 review. AV-TEST’s June report also tested Avast One 26.5.1 and AVG Antivirus 20.8, but its product labels and editions differ from the free products in AV-Comparatives’ review. | Someone who wants to investigate a free option and verify its current feature limits before relying on it. |
Editorial rankings also differ. Macworld’s 2026 guide names Intego ONE its top pick, while TechRadar’s 2026 guide names Bitdefender its number one. Those are editorial recommendations, not a shared independent-lab verdict. Treat them as different reviewers’ judgments rather than proof that one product is objectively best for every Mac owner.

Is free antivirus for Mac good enough?
A free product may be enough if you want its included malware protection and understand which features are excluded. The 2026 AV-Comparatives review includes Avast One Free for Mac and AVG AntiVirus Free for Mac. That confirms they were covered in a Mac security review; it does not establish that every feature of a paid edition is available free, or what the current free-tier limits are. Check the product’s current feature list and terms before installing it.
To compare a free option with a paid one, focus on what you will actually use: web or phishing controls, ransomware features, cross-device coverage, and support. A longer feature list is not automatically better protection or better value.

Should my Mac antivirus include a VPN?
Only if you want a VPN and the exact included service meets your needs. AV-Comparatives describes Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac as including a limited-data VPN and Intego ONE Complete as including a VPN. Those descriptions do not establish that the included VPNs have the same limits, capabilities, or terms. Read the current product details before treating a bundled VPN as a substitute for a service with specific features you require.
How should you compare products before subscribing?
Check the precise product edition and version, then compare the protections and terms that matter to your use. Independent lab tests are snapshots: AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives used different product lists, editions, versions, and test methods in 2026. A result in one lab should not be silently transferred to another edition or a future release.
- Protection evidence: Look for a Mac-specific test, its date, the tested product version, and the types of threats it covered.
- False positives and usability: Check whether the test assessed clean-file detection, alert clarity, installation, and day-to-day usability. AV-TEST scores usability; AV-Comparatives also discusses setup, interface, and alerts.
- Performance: Read the score in the context of the lab’s macOS version and setup rather than assuming it predicts the effect on every Mac.
- Coverage: Confirm whether the product includes web or phishing controls, ransomware features, browser extensions, or detection of Windows malware on shared drives, if those are relevant to you.
- Bundle and subscription terms: Verify the current price, renewal price, duration, number of devices, cancellation terms, and any free-tier limits for the exact edition and region. Those details are not established by the cited 2026 lab reports and can change.
What matters beyond antivirus?
Keep macOS and apps updated, back up important files, and be cautious with unexpected links and terminal commands copied from websites or messages. AV-Comparatives also recommends patching, backups, and careful handling of links and copied commands. These habits address risks an antivirus score alone cannot measure.
