Monitoring as Code: Why Your Monitors Should Live in Git

Monitoring as code puts dashboards, alerts, and related configuration under version control. Git adds review and history, but teams still need validation, access controls, and a safe deployment workflow.

Monitoring as code means defining monitoring and observability configuration in files, then managing it with source control and automation. Keeping those definitions in Git makes changes reviewable, traceable, and easier to deploy consistently—but Git alone cannot tell you whether an alert is useful or safe. That still requires engineering judgment, validation, and controlled rollout.

What monitoring as code includes

Monitoring as code (MaC) applies software-development practices to the configuration that makes a monitoring system work. Rather than treating settings as undocumented edits in a web interface, a team represents them in files or code and uses a repository and automation to manage changes.

The exact scope depends on the platform. It may include dashboards, alert rules, data sources, folders, notification settings, agents, or collectors. HashiCorp describes Terraform as a way to configure monitoring solutions, install agents, create dashboards, and set alerts (HashiCorp: Define your logging and monitoring). Grafana’s documentation covers as-code workflows for dashboards and broader observability resources (Grafana: Observability as Code).

Why put monitors in Git?

Changes have a reviewable history

A monitor change can be committed like an application change. A pull request lets teammates inspect what is changing, discuss thresholds or routing, and see who proposed and approved it. The commit history also helps connect a configuration change to later behavior. Grafana describes Git Sync as synchronizing dashboard files with a Grafana instance and supporting version control, branches, and pull requests (Grafana: Observability as Code workflows).

Deployment can be repeatable

Once configuration is in files, a team can use a pipeline or GitOps workflow to apply approved changes. That reduces reliance on one person reproducing a series of interface edits by hand. Grafana’s as-code guidance discusses CI/CD and rollback workflows (Grafana: Observability as Code).

Configuration can be managed alongside the systems it observes

Git makes it possible to review monitor changes in the context of related infrastructure or application changes. For example, a pull request that changes a service’s behavior can also propose a corresponding dashboard or alert update. This does not mean every team must keep application code and monitoring configuration in the same repository; the useful principle is that monitoring changes have an explicit, shared home and a controlled path to deployment.

Choose an implementation that fits your platform

There is no single required tool or configuration format. Choose based on the resources you need to manage, how your team reviews and deploys changes, and who will maintain the integration.

Approach What it does Good fit when
Grafana Git Sync Synchronizes dashboard files in a GitHub repository with Grafana; the documented workflow supports branches and pull requests. (Grafana documentation) You use Grafana and want a Git-centered dashboard workflow.
Grafana file provisioning Loads resources such as dashboards and data sources from files. Grafana describes this as version-controllable and compatible with GitOps workflows, while documenting setup requirements and limitations. (Grafana documentation) You want file-based configuration and can work within provisioning’s supported resources and operational constraints.
Terraform The Grafana provider manages resources including dashboards, data sources, plugins, folders, organizations, and alert notification channels. HashiCorp also describes providers as a way to configure monitoring solutions such as Grafana and Datadog. (Grafana provider documentation; HashiCorp guidance) You already use Terraform or want to manage supported monitoring resources through infrastructure-as-code workflows.
Other tools and integrations Grafana lists a CLI, Foundation SDK, Ansible, Grafana Operator, Crossplane, and community tools. They differ in configuration language, API level, and deployment model. Grafana says Grafonnet is not officially supported and recommends the Foundation SDK for creating dashboards as code. (Grafana documentation) Your platform or team workflow calls for a specific integration; check its support status and resource coverage before adopting it.

Prometheus is a monitoring system, while Grafana and other API consumers can provide visualization options, according to the Prometheus project overview. Where alert rules and other configuration should live depends on the team’s stack and operating model; MaC does not require moving every monitoring responsibility into one tool.

How to decide which tool to use

  • Resource coverage: Confirm whether the tool manages the assets you need, such as alerts, dashboards, data sources, folders, notification policies, agents, or secrets. Do not assume coverage from the phrase “as code.”
  • Workflow fit: Decide whether changes should move through pull requests, a CI pipeline, GitOps reconciliation, or local file provisioning. Prefer a workflow the team can operate reliably.
  • Validation and rollout: Identify what checks can run before deployment and whether changes can be tested in a non-production environment, staged, or reverted. Capabilities vary by tool and deployment model.
  • Access control: Determine who can edit the repository, sync changes, and perform administrative or cleanup actions. Grafana documents repository protection and access controls for Git Sync (Grafana: Git Sync permissions and access control).
  • Platform and team fit: Account for the monitoring system already in use and the languages, APIs, and operational skills the team can support.
  • Ongoing ownership: Assign responsibility for provider or API changes, credentials, pipeline maintenance, and shared definitions. These are operational considerations, not costs that can be quantified uniformly across tools.

A practical workflow for managing monitors in Git

  1. Define the resources. Represent the monitors and related resources in the format supported by your platform or provider. Decide which configuration belongs in the repository and how sensitive values will be handled.
  2. Commit and request review. Make the change in a branch and open a pull request. Include enough context for reviewers to assess the intended behavior, not just the syntax.
  3. Validate before applying. Run checks appropriate to your chosen tool in CI, and inspect the proposed changes. A successful syntax or plan check does not prove that a threshold, query, or notification route is operationally sound.
  4. Test away from production when supported. Apply or synchronize to a non-production environment first if your platform and workflow allow it. This staged rollout is a practical safeguard, not a built-in feature guaranteed by every tool.
  5. Promote and retain the record. Apply the approved configuration to production through the chosen pipeline or synchronization workflow. Keep commit and deployment history available for diagnosis and rollback; Grafana’s guidance describes CI/CD and rollback as parts of as-code workflows (Grafana: Observability as Code).
  6. Control access and secrets. Keep repository permissions, platform permissions, and credentials explicit. A repository change process is only one part of protecting who can alter live monitoring configuration.

What Git does not guarantee

Version control improves change management; it does not establish that an alert is correct, actionable, or quiet enough to be useful. A reviewed file can still encode a poor query, a misleading threshold, or an inappropriate notification route. Teams must validate monitor semantics, consider alert noise, assign ownership, and decide how changes reach production.

Likewise, putting configuration in Git does not automatically provide safe deployment or access control. Those depend on the pipeline, platform permissions, repository protections, and operating practices around the files. Grafana’s guidance treats permissions and repository protection as part of the Git Sync operating model (Grafana: Git Sync permissions and access control).

When monitoring as code is worth adopting

MaC is especially useful when multiple people change monitoring configuration, when changes need review and audit history, or when teams want a repeatable way to promote configuration across environments. It may be less valuable to introduce a complex pipeline for a tiny, stable setup if nobody can maintain it. Start with the resources and workflow that solve a real coordination or deployment problem, then expand only as the team can own the added automation. Grafana’s learning material also explains version control, review, and pipeline deployment for resources as code (Grafana: Resources as code in Grafana).
