Monitor Stands: Five Styles for Different Desk Setups

Compare platform risers, pedestal stands, clamp and grommet arms, and tilt stands. Learn which monitor and desk measurements to check before buying.

The right monitor stand depends on how your display mounts, how much desk space you have, and whether you need to move or adjust the screen. Rather than rank individual products without comparable testing, this guide compares five stand styles and explains the fit checks to make before buying.

Start by checking your monitor and desk

Before choosing a style, confirm the monitor’s weight without its factory base, screen dimensions, mounting holes, VESA pattern and screw requirements. Dell identifies 75 x 75 mm and 100 x 100 mm as common VESA patterns, but compatibility varies by display. Check the exact monitor specifications rather than assuming a pattern or screw size. Dell’s monitor-stand guidance also recommends considering the monitor base dimensions and desk stability.

Measure the desk’s width and depth, the monitor base footprint, and the clearance behind the desk. For a mount, check the desk thickness limit, edge shape, grommet availability, and whether cables, a shelf or a wall will obstruct the clamp or arm. In a multi-monitor setup, consider the combined load, screen widths, arm reach, alignment and desk stability.

Five monitor-stand styles to consider

1. Freestanding platform riser

A platform riser supports the monitor’s original base and sits directly on the desk. It can suit a display without compatible VESA holes, a desk where clamping is impractical, or someone who wants storage space beneath the screen. Before buying, compare the platform’s width and load rating with the monitor and its base; also check whether its lift height puts the screen where you need it. Dell describes freestanding risers as easy to place or reposition and useful where attaching hardware is not practical. Dell’s overview of monitor stands covers this format.

2. Adjustable pedestal stand

A pedestal uses a desktop base but may let you change the monitor’s height or angle. It is an option when you want more adjustment than a basic stand offers but do not want a desk clamp. Check its VESA interface, supported monitor weight, base footprint, and the actual range of height and tilt adjustment. Ergotron describes a monitor stand as a base and pedestal supporting a VESA interface, and distinguishes stands from arms by their form. Ergotron’s monitor stands and arms overview explains the categories.

3. Clamp-mounted monitor arm

A clamp arm attaches at the desk edge and can make it easier to reposition a screen while leaving more desktop surface free. It requires a compatible mounting interface and a desk edge that can accept the clamp. Verify monitor weight and VESA fit, desk thickness, clearance around the clamp, arm reach and whether the desk remains stable when the screen is extended. Dell’s guidance covers clamp mounts and the monitor and workspace checks involved. Review Dell’s monitor-stand guidance before settling on this format.

HUANUO FlowLift™ Dual Monitor Stand, Fully Adjustable Gaming Monitor Desk Mount for 13–32″ Computer Screens, Full Motion VESA 75x75/100x100 with C-Clamp & Grommet Base, Each Arm Holds 4.4 to 19.8 lbs
  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
  • Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

4. Grommet-mounted monitor arm

A grommet arm secures through a suitable hole in the desk rather than gripping its edge. It may work where the desk edge is obstructed or unsuitable for a clamp, but only if the desk has an appropriate opening and the mount fits it. Check the arm’s installation requirements, monitor capacity and reach, and make sure the hole location leaves room for the display to move. Dell discusses grommet mounting alongside clamp mounting in its monitor-stand guidance.

5. Basic tilt stand

A tilt-only stand changes the screen angle but does not necessarily change its height. It can be sufficient when the monitor already sits at a comfortable height and you only need to adjust the viewing angle. HP distinguishes basic tilt stands from height-adjustable stands and cautions that a fixed height will not suit every user. Check the stand’s height before choosing one. HP’s overview of monitor stands describes these trade-offs.

Choose adjustments that solve a real problem

  • Height: Choose height adjustment if the display needs to sit higher or lower than its current position allows.
  • Tilt: Choose tilt if changing the screen’s angle is enough; it does not raise or lower the display.
  • Swivel: Choose swivel if you need to turn the screen toward another seat or work area.
  • Rotation: Choose rotation if you expect to use the display in portrait orientation.
  • Reach and repositioning: An arm is useful when the screen needs to move during the day, provided the desk and mount allow it.

More adjustment is not automatically better: a fixed-height or tilt-only stand may suit a setup whose position already works. Dell’s guidance on monitor stands and HP’s stand overview describe the differences between adjustment types.

Check capacity, mounting and setup details

  • Capacity: Match the stand’s stated load limit to the monitor’s weight. Do not infer capacity from a product’s appearance or material.
  • Mount compatibility: Confirm the VESA pattern and screw requirements for both the monitor and stand. A VESA adapter may be needed for some combinations, but verify fit for the specific display and mount.
  • Desk compatibility: For a clamp or grommet arm, confirm the installation limits and the desk’s construction, thickness and available clearance.
  • Footprint and reach: Check where the base or clamp will sit, how far the display needs to travel, and whether the desk or surrounding furniture will block movement.
  • Daily use: Consider cable routing, access to the desk surface, under-screen storage, installation effort and how often you reposition the monitor.

Dimensions are product-specific, not category-wide. For example, the StarTech.com datasheet for a particular monitor riser clamp lists a maximum surface thickness of 1.3 inches (33 mm) and a product height of 5.7 inches (14.5 cm). Those measurements apply to that specific product; check the datasheet for any stand you are considering.
