To monitor OpenAI API activity, start in the API Platform’s Usage Dashboard. Use request-level response details to inspect a single call, the Usage API for automated activity reports, Costs data for billing reconciliation, and project alerts or spend limits to manage risk. For ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu workspace usage, use the separate Admin Console rather than treating it as API Platform activity.
Choose the right OpenAI usage view
OpenAI API usage and ChatGPT Enterprise or Edu workspace usage are managed in different places. API requests, API costs, and project controls belong in the API Platform. Workspace administrators use the ChatGPT Admin Console for Enterprise and Edu reporting and controls; keep those figures separate unless you have confirmed how the workspace is billed.

The seven methods below are a practical way to organize OpenAI’s documented options, not an official OpenAI-defined set of seven. The Usage Dashboard displays dates in UTC, so account for that when matching its totals to logs recorded in another timezone. Dashboard access requires organization owner status or the Usage Dashboard permission. OpenAI’s API usage and costs guide describes the dashboard and its access requirements.
Seven ways to monitor OpenAI usage
1. Review the Usage Dashboard
In the API Platform, open the Usage Dashboard, select the organization, and choose the reporting period. Use its capability views to inspect API activity over time. The dashboard can show current and past billing periods. Remember that its dates are in UTC when comparing the totals with application logs.

2. Filter activity by project
Use the project selector within the Usage Dashboard to narrow the view to one or more projects. That selector is independent of the project selected elsewhere in the API Platform. Clear the selection to return to organization-wide data. Project filtering is useful when teams or applications need separate usage tracking and cost allocation. 3. Inspect usage details for an individual request
When investigating a particular call, inspect the usage information in that API response. This gives request-level context that a period total cannot provide. Include Playground calls when comparing application logs against dashboard activity: Playground use also counts toward API usage.

4. Query the Usage API for automated reports
For recurring or customized reports, use the organization Usage API. It provides granular activity by endpoint and supports time buckets, filters, and grouping by dimensions such as project, user, API key, or model where supported. Check the parameters for the specific endpoint before building a report; available groupings and filters can vary by endpoint. See the Usage API reference.
5. Use Costs data to reconcile spending
Usage records describe activity; cost records describe spend. They can differ slightly because they represent different things. For reconciliation against an invoice, OpenAI recommends using Costs data rather than treating an activity total as the financial source of truth. You can inspect Costs in the dashboard or use the Costs endpoint described in the Usage API reference.

6. Set project alerts—and understand the difference between alerts and limits
Project monthly spend thresholds and notifications can flag that a project is approaching its budget. An alert is a soft threshold: it notifies but does not stop API requests. Where available, a hard spend limit can block affected requests, but enforcement may lag and spending can slightly exceed the limit. Choose a hard cap only when the risk of interrupted API traffic is acceptable for the project. OpenAI documents project thresholds in its project management guide and the behavior of alerts and hard limits in its spend limits guide.
7. Export CSV reports or use workspace reporting
For API usage detail, export Activity data; for spending analysis, export Cost data. Exports can be scoped to a month or month-to-date, and cost data can be grouped by line item for more detailed invoice reconciliation. OpenAI’s export instructions also note a policy change: detailed API costs stop appearing on Enterprise invoices issued from April 1, 2026, with users directed to the dashboard export flow instead. Diagnose a usage or spend limit error
Do not treat every quota or limit message as the same problem. Check the API response’s error code and follow the matching remedy. OpenAI distinguishes these conditions from request and token rate limits. An alert itself does not change a budget or restore blocked traffic. See OpenAI’s troubleshooting guide.

organization_usage_limit_exceeded: the organization’s approved usage limit has been exceeded; address the organization limit.organization_spend_limit_exceeded: the organization spend limit has been reached; review organization-level spend controls.project_spend_limit_exceeded: the project spend limit has been reached; review that project’s spend controls.credit_balance_exhausted: prepaid credits are exhausted; resolve the credit balance issue.- Request or token rate-limit errors: these are a separate category from usage or spend limits and require rate-limit troubleshooting.
