Monitor Buying Guide: What to Look for for Work, Gaming, or Both

A practical monitor buying guide: match screen and gaming specs to your tasks and hardware, then verify ports, HDR performance, and ergonomics.

Choose a monitor by starting with the work or games you do and the computer that will drive it—not by chasing a single specification. Screen size and resolution need to suit your desk and viewing distance; gaming refresh rate needs to match what your system can deliver; and ports, HDR performance, and stand adjustments matter only insofar as they meet your actual setup.

Start with your tasks, desk, and computer

Before comparing monitors, list what you will use the display for: office work, color-sensitive creative work, competitive games, slower-paced games, or a mix. Then check desk space, typical viewing distance, the devices you need to connect, and what your computer can output. Resolution, refresh rate, and HDR capability are useful only when both the display and source device support the modes you want.

For a first shortlist, write down your must-haves and the compromises you can accept. Intel’s gaming monitor buying guide treats resolution, refresh rate, response time, panel types, ports, and mounting as separate factors; no one specification determines whether a monitor suits every use.

Match screen size and resolution to your space

Consider resolution together with screen size and viewing distance. More pixels can show finer detail, but a higher resolution is not automatically the right choice if the screen is awkward for your desk or your computer cannot drive it at the settings you want. Lenovo’s monitor buying guide describes QHD as providing more detail than HD and treats resolution as relevant to both work and gaming.

Philips 24 Inch Computer Monitor FHD 100Hz VA VESA Flicker-Free, 241V8LB | 1920×1080 LED Monitor, 4ms GtG, Adaptive Sync, HDMI 1.4, Tilt Adjust, Low Blue Light, 4yr Advance Replacement Warranty
  • CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
  • WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Measure the usable desk space and consider how far you normally sit from the screen.
  • Decide whether your work benefits from more visible detail or room for windows, and whether your games and computer can run at the intended resolution.
  • Check the exact display mode supported by the monitor’s input you plan to use; a resolution printed on the box does not establish that every port supports every refresh rate.

For gaming, balance refresh rate and motion needs

A higher refresh rate can make motion look smoother when a game and computer can supply enough frames to take advantage of it. That can matter more in fast competitive games than in general office work or games normally played at lower frame rates. Check the graphics capability of the computer or console alongside the monitor specification; paying for a faster panel does not make the source system render more frames.

Compare response-time claims as well, but do not use a headline response-time number as a complete measure of motion quality. Intel identifies both refresh rate and response time as gaming-monitor considerations, but a shortlist still needs to reflect the games you play and the output your hardware can sustain.

  • SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter

Choose panel and image characteristics for the work you do

Panel technologies involve tradeoffs in areas such as viewing angles, contrast, motion characteristics, and price. Avoid treating IPS, VA, or OLED as a universal ranking: the right choice depends on which image qualities matter for your tasks and the performance of the specific model.

For color-sensitive creative work, look more closely at color coverage and accuracy than you might for everyday office tasks. If accuracy or uniformity is essential, compare independent measurements of the models you are considering. The available buying guidance explains panel types but does not provide a common comparative test dataset for current monitors, so it cannot establish a universal winner.

Verify ports and USB-C laptop features

List every device you expect to connect: for example, a desktop graphics card, laptop, console, webcam, keyboard, storage device, or network connection. Check each relevant port’s supported resolution and refresh rate rather than relying on the connector name alone.

USB-C can carry video, data, and power, which may let a laptop use one cable for several functions. But USB-C does not guarantee that a particular monitor supports all three, provides enough charging power for your laptop, or supports the video mode you want. Confirm the monitor’s model documentation and the laptop’s capabilities. Lenovo’s guide describes USB-C’s possible functions; the connector itself is not proof of a specific implementation.

Judge HDR by display performance, not the input label

An HDR10 input or a generic “HDR” claim does not by itself show that a monitor will deliver conspicuous HDR performance. Intel notes that format support indicates that a display can decode a signal, not the level of HDR performance it achieves. Check the monitor’s brightness, contrast or dimming capabilities, color performance, and any recognized certification tier before paying extra for HDR.

VESA’s DisplayHDR certification is a tested, tiered standard addressing luminance, color gamut, bit depth, and rise time. Microsoft also describes DisplayHDR as a multi-tier certification, with higher numbers indicating higher tiers, in its Windows HDR guidance. Actual HDR compatibility depends on the monitor, graphics hardware, operating system, connection, and content.

Check stand adjustments and mounting

If you will work at the monitor for long periods, check what the included stand actually adjusts: height, tilt, swivel, and pivot are not guaranteed on every model. If the stand does not suit your desk, verify the display’s VESA mounting-hole pattern and whether the mount supports its size and weight. Intel’s buying guide covers ergonomic adjustments and VESA compatibility.

Compare shortlisted monitors against your priorities

Once you have a shortlist, compare the exact models on the features that matter to your use. Confirm supported modes for the specific ports and the total cost before deciding.

What to compare What to verify
Screen size and resolution Fit for your desk and viewing distance, desired detail, and the computer’s supported output.
Refresh rate and response behavior Whether your games and hardware can use the refresh rate, plus more than just a headline response-time figure.
Panel and image performance Which contrast, viewing-angle, motion, color-coverage, or accuracy characteristics your tasks require; seek independent measurements when accuracy or uniformity is central.
Ports and laptop connectivity Supported resolution and refresh rate per port, plus USB-C video, data, and power-delivery capability where needed.
HDR Certification tier and underlying brightness, contrast or dimming, and color capabilities—not just an HDR input format.
Stand and mounting Included height, tilt, swivel, and pivot adjustments, and VESA pattern and mount capacity if you plan to use an arm.
Total price The cost of the exact model and any mount or connection accessories you actually need.

For mixed work and gaming, decide which compromise you notice most: work-oriented detail and connectivity versus gaming motion performance, or stronger image capabilities versus cost. There is no universally best size, resolution, panel, or refresh rate; the useful choice is the one that fits your tasks and hardware.
