NFL teams can trade draft picks and players whose rights they hold, but a player deal also brings contract terms into the acquiring team’s evaluation. Draft-day trades require league review and approval. The salary-cap effect depends on the specific transaction and contract; a trade headline alone does not reveal a team’s precise cap charge.
What can NFL teams trade, and how does a trade get approved?
Teams may negotiate trades before and during the NFL Draft, and trades also take place at other times of the year. The assets described in the NFL’s rules include draft selections and current players whose rights a club holds.

What happens during a draft-day trade?
- The clubs agree on the deal. A trade can exchange draft picks, a player for a pick, or a combination of assets. NFL transaction records include examples involving future selections as well as deals made during the draft.
- Both clubs relay the same information. During the draft, each club calls the NFL Head Table and communicates the trade details.
- The league reviews the transaction. The NFL reviews and approves the deal before announcing it.
The NFL publishes trade activity beyond draft day as well, so trades are not limited to the draft itself.
How do traded draft picks work?
A team can trade a selection it holds, including a future selection. In a pick-for-pick deal, each club gives up one or more selections in exchange for the other club’s picks. In a player-for-pick deal, one club receives a player and the other receives a selection. The exact package depends on the agreed terms; the NFL’s trade tracker records examples of both kinds of exchange.

When assessing a pick trade, identify the round and draft year for each selection. If a pick is conditional, its conditions also matter: the pick ultimately conveyed may depend on the terms of that particular agreement. Those details cannot be inferred from the phrase “traded for a draft pick” alone.
What happens to a player’s contract when he is traded?
A player comes with contract terms that matter to the acquiring club, including compensation, guarantees, and timing. The contract’s headline value by itself does not explain what compensation is protected or under what conditions. Teams evaluating a player trade therefore need to consider the contract language as well as the player and the assets exchanged.
What do NFL contract guarantees mean?
NFL Football Operations describes three kinds of guarantee protection: skill, salary cap, and injury. Compensation protected against all three is “fully guaranteed” at signing in the league’s explanation. If it is protected against only one or two, it is partially guaranteed.
That distinction matters because “fully guaranteed” has a specific, narrower meaning in this explanation; it does not simply mean that a contract’s total advertised value is guaranteed. The guarantee terms and their timing are part of what a club must evaluate in a trade.

How does an NFL trade affect the salary cap?
There is no single cap result that applies to every trade. The outcome depends on the player’s contract, the transaction, the season, and the applicable accounting rules. The salary-cap figure for a season is a team limit, not a calculation of the cap charge created by an individual transaction.
The NFL reported a 2026 salary cap of $301.2 million per club, an increase of $22 million from the $279.2 million per club reported for 2025. Those are NFL figures for their respective seasons. Neither figure tells you how a particular trade affects a club’s available room, cap charge, or other accounting.
Rank #4
To determine a specific trade’s cap effect, you need the player’s contract, the transaction date, the relevant league year, and the accounting provisions that apply. Without those details and an authoritative transaction-specific calculation, it is not sound to conclude from a trade announcement alone that a team gained a particular amount of cap space or incurred a particular amount of dead money.

Can a team trade an unsigned drafted rookie?
Under the NFL’s published 2026–27 important dates, an unsigned drafted rookie cannot be traded to another club in 2026. Until the 2027 NFL Draft, the rookie may sign a player contract only with the club that drafted him. This is a rule for the stated period, not a timeless description of every draft season.
