Monitor Black Screen: What to Check and How to Fix It

A black monitor can mean no power, no signal, or a Windows display problem. Use the power indicator, input checks, cable swaps, and Windows steps to isolate the cause.

A monitor that looks black may have no power, may be on the wrong input, may not be receiving a usable video signal, or may be showing a Windows display problem. Check the monitor’s power indicator and on-screen menu first, then trace the signal path before changing software settings or replacing hardware.

First, identify what “black screen” means

A black screen is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Microsoft notes that a blank screen can occur at startup, after signing in, or after an update, with different clues pointing to different Windows problems. A monitor that cannot show its own menu is a different case from one that displays a menu but reports no signal. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guide covers Windows-specific blank-screen scenarios.

  • No power: The monitor appears off, and its indicator does not show a powered state. Check the outlet, power cable, and monitor power control.
  • Powered, no picture: The indicator or on-screen menu shows that the monitor has power, but the computer’s image is absent. Continue with input and cable checks.
  • Windows blank screen: The computer may be running while Windows is sending the image to another display, or a driver or Windows process may be stalled.

Indicator colors and blink patterns vary by monitor. Dell’s troubleshooting material uses the status light to help distinguish power from signal conditions, but your model’s manual is the authority for what its indicator means. Dell’s monitor troubleshooting guide explains its example diagnostic checks.

Check power, input, and the video connection

  1. Confirm monitor power. Check that the power cable is firmly connected to the monitor and outlet, try a known-working outlet if needed, and turn the monitor on. Consult its manual for the model-specific meaning of the status light and the built-in self-test procedure. ASUS also recommends following the product’s support instructions for LCD monitor checks. ASUS LCD monitor support
  2. Open the monitor’s menu. Use its physical controls to display the on-screen menu. If the menu appears, the monitor has enough power to display it; that does not establish that the computer’s video signal is working.
  3. Select the connected input. Use the monitor’s input/source control to choose the port in use, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, DVI, or VGA. A monitor set to a different input can remain black even while both devices are powered.
  4. Reseat the video cable at both ends. Unplug and reconnect it at the monitor and computer, then check accessible connectors for damage. If the computer has a separate graphics card, connect the cable to that card’s video output rather than assuming a motherboard port is the correct one.
  5. Simplify the connection. Temporarily remove docks, dongles, adapters, splitters, and other accessories, and connect the monitor directly to the computer. Try another output port if one is available. Microsoft lists connected accessories among possible sources of display conflicts. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps

Isolate the monitor, cable, and computer

Swap one part of the setup at a time so you can see whether the problem follows the monitor, cable, or computer. Microsoft recommends trying another cable or monitor to help rule out hardware issues, while Dell describes connecting the monitor to another computer as an isolation check. These tests narrow the possibilities; one result alone does not prove a component is defective. Microsoft · Dell

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
  • Try a known-good cable. Use a cable with connectors and capabilities appropriate for both devices. Buying a replacement is only a useful diagnostic step if the existing cable is a plausible cause; a new cable will not fix a power, Windows, or monitor-hardware problem.
  • Connect the monitor to another computer. If it displays an image there, investigate the original computer’s output, settings, or software. If it remains blank, the monitor, cable, or selected input still needs checking.
  • Connect the original computer to another display. If that display works, the original monitor or its connection becomes a stronger suspect. If it also shows no image, investigate the computer’s output or Windows state.
  • Run the monitor’s self-test. Follow the exact procedure in the monitor manual. A self-test can help separate a monitor problem from a missing computer signal, but the procedure and result indicators are model-specific.

If Windows is running, check display mode and graphics

Use these steps when the monitor has power and the checks above have not identified a loose connection or wrong input. They apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels and recovery screens can vary by device and software version.

Check where Windows is sending the picture

Press Windows+P to open the projection options, then select a mode that uses the connected screen, such as PC screen only or Duplicate. Windows may be set to send the image to another display.

Reset the graphics driver

Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief flicker may indicate that the reset occurred. If the image does not return, restart the computer. Microsoft includes this shortcut among its blank-screen troubleshooting steps. Microsoft Support

Use the symptom to choose the next Windows check

  • Black screen with a visible cursor: If Task Manager opens, Microsoft suggests restarting Windows Explorer. A stalled process or graphics driver can be involved.
  • Black screen after signing in: Check the display-output mode first. Microsoft also identifies profile-related issues as a possible Windows-specific cause.
  • Problem began after a driver update: In Device Manager, open the display adapter’s properties and use Roll Back Driver if the option is available. Otherwise, follow the computer or graphics-device maker’s instructions to reinstall or update the driver.
  • Normal startup is still unusable: Microsoft describes using Windows Recovery and Safe Mode for further troubleshooting. Follow the recovery steps for your Windows device rather than treating BIOS updates or repeated forced-shutdown cycles as routine first fixes.
  • Blinking cursor before Windows loads: This can indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. That is a startup or boot issue, not necessarily a monitor fault.

When to contact support

If the monitor has no power after checking its outlet and connection, or if its self-test and tests with another cable or computer point to a monitor problem, consult the model’s support or warranty channel. If the monitor works with another computer but the original computer still produces no image, seek support for that computer or its graphics hardware. Warranty coverage and service procedures depend on the model and region.
