SAMPLES converts molecular structures into melodies that people can edit—and decodes musical sequences back into molecular structures. The 2023 research demonstrates an interactive way to represent and explore molecules, not a system that proves its generated structures are useful or safe drugs.
How does SAMPLES turn a molecule into music?
SAMPLES stands for Sonic Architecture for Molecule Production and Live-Input Encoding Software. In the method, selected physicochemical properties help determine a musical key, while a molecule’s SELFIES string—a text representation of molecular structure—is mapped to a sequence of notes. The researchers describe assigning property values to bins associated with keys and mapping SELFIES tokens to note shifts. The paper in Digital Discovery describes the design and demonstrations.

This is an engineered encoding, not a natural law that gives every molecule a uniquely correct tune. In this implementation, the property aggregation is dominated largely by molecular weight. A melody therefore reflects the choices in the mapping as well as the molecule; musical resemblance alone does not establish chemical, biological, or pharmacological similarity.

Can a melody be turned back into a molecule?
In the demonstrations, yes. SAMPLES decodes note sequences into molecular structures, so editing notes can change the structure represented. The authors also decoded a melody composed by a person who deliberately used chemistry knowledge to favor a note mapped to carbon. That example illustrates an interaction concept, not a general demonstration that composing music reliably produces valid compounds.

The paper explores simple and larger structures, edits that produce related but distinct structures, and interpolations between melodies. These are computational demonstrations of encoding and interaction. They do not report experimental synthesis or tests establishing the generated structures’ safety, efficacy, or clinical usefulness.
What does MusicVAE add?
The researchers pair SAMPLES with MusicVAE, a model for generating musical sequences. Their CROSSFADE workflow interpolates between melodies and then decodes an interpolated melody as a molecular structure. The idea is to explore structures corresponding to musical sequences between two inputs, rather than to claim that a tune blend is automatically a chemically meaningful or therapeutically promising path.

The paper presents music as a potentially interactive, high-dimensional medium for working with molecular information. That is a framing for the method, not evidence that music carries more useful information than established representations such as line drawings, molecular graphs, strings, or fingerprints. Each representation exposes different information and offers different trade-offs for computation and human inspection.

What does the musical encoding preserve—and what needs checking?
SAMPLES links selected properties and a structural string to musical choices, and its demonstrated decoder maps musical sequences back to structures. Those capabilities make a melody an editable interface to a designed representation; they do not remove the need to assess the decoded chemistry independently.

- Inspect the structure: A decoded molecule needs chemical review rather than acceptance based on how its melody sounds.
- Check stereochemistry: The authors warn that generated structures may contain undefined stereocenters.
- Validate any proposed use: The demonstrations do not establish synthesis, biological activity, safety, or clinical utility.
- Do not infer biological similarity from musical similarity: The mapping encodes chosen properties and structure, not a demonstrated relationship between tunes and biological effects.
Why represent molecules as melodies?
The proposal is to make molecular information available through a form people can hear and manipulate, potentially using musical input as another way to explore structures. As the authors put it, “Sonification is the encoding of non-musical information as music and provides a means to encode information in many musical dimensions, while simultaneously providing a new means of interactivity.” In SAMPLES, that interactivity is the central demonstration: a person can work with notes, and the system can map them back to molecular structures.
The study, by Babak Mahjour, Jordan Bench, Rui Zhang, Jared Frazier, and Tim Cernak, was first published on 14 March 2023 in Digital Discovery, volume 2, pages 520–530. Chemistry World’s report also describes the melody-blending concept; the journal article is the primary source for the method and its limitations.
