Can Magnetic Noise Power a Device? What Researchers Have Demonstrated

Yes—changing magnetic fields around power lines and electrical equipment can be converted into electricity, but the amount depends on the field, frequency, device design, resonance and electrical load. Published prototypes have produced outputs from hundreds of microwatts to milliwatts under specified laboratory conditions. That is evidence of a real energy-harvesting technique, not proof that incidental magnetic fields can reliably power ordinary household electronics or that a ready-made consumer harvester is available.

What “magnetic noise” means in energy harvesting

In this research, “magnetic noise” is an informal term for alternating or fluctuating magnetic fields, including the 50 or 60 Hz fields associated with power lines. It does not mean that a device can draw useful energy from a static magnetic field alone: the field must change, and the harvester must couple to that change.

Two main conversion routes appear in the cited work. They differ in how they turn magnetic excitation into electrical output, so their reported results should not be compared as if they were tests of interchangeable devices.

Induction: a changing field drives a coil

Electromagnetic induction uses changing magnetic flux through a coil to generate voltage. The voltage and usable power depend on factors such as field strength, coil turns and geometry, core choice, frequency, resonance and the attached load. A measured voltage by itself does not establish how much power a device can deliver to a circuit.

A 2011 study by Tashiro and colleagues tested an air-core coil with a resonant capacitor for power-line magnetic noise. Its best module harvested 6.32 mW from a 21.2 μT field at 60 Hz. This is a result for that module and test condition, not a general estimate of what a coil will collect from a nearby power line. Read the university record for the study.

Magneto-mechano-electric conversion: magnetic excitation creates strain

A magneto-mechano-electric (MME) harvester converts magnetic excitation into mechanical strain or motion, then converts that response into electrical energy, often using a piezoelectric layer. A 2020 modeling study examined a composite cantilever using Metglas-2605SC and PZT-5A. See the study record.

Researchers have also explored MME devices for weak, low-frequency fields, where a simple induction approach can be challenging. A 2017 review discusses magnetoelectric energy harvesting for self-powered systems, while a 2019 paper describes a rollable magnetoelectric harvester as a wireless IoT sensor. These examples show the range of research approaches; they do not establish that a commercial product is available. Read the review; read the 2019 paper.

Study and device Reported result What the result describes
Tashiro et al., 2011: induction module 6.32 mW at 21.2 μT and 60 Hz Best harvested result reported for the study’s air-core coil and resonant-capacitor module. University record.
Chu et al., 2022: clamped-clamped MME generator 370 μW RMS at 0.48 Oe and 50 Hz; 970 μW RMS at 0.96 Oe and 50 Hz Optimized outputs reported for the proposed device. The paper also reports continuously driving an IoT sensor in its experiment at 0.48 Oe; that demonstration applies to the authors’ setup, not arbitrary sensors or locations. Read the paper.
You et al., 2024: dual-beam harvester 185 μW at 1 Oe Output described in the University of Liverpool repository record for a device using an internal magnetic-coupled mechanism. It is a separate test, not a direct benchmark against the 2022 result. Read the repository record.

These field values use different units: the studies report some in μT and others in Oe. Do not compare them by reading the numbers alone; the field convention, experimental setup and other conditions matter. Nor should a reported output be treated as an efficiency figure or a prediction for an untested location. The studies establish specific prototype results, not a market-wide yield or deployment rate.

Why field strength, frequency and resonance matter

Weak fields limit what can be collected

The strength and waveform of the field at the harvester influence the available excitation. A device tested in a controlled field may not receive the same excitation when placed near real equipment: distance, orientation and surroundings can change the field reaching it. A result measured at a stated field level should therefore remain attached to that condition.

Resonance can boost output but narrow the useful range

Resonant coils or mechanical structures can improve conversion around a target frequency. The trade-off is that a resonant device may perform less well away from that frequency. A 2025 study of an MME harvester for AC circular magnetic fields describes a system optimized around 60 Hz and reports a 3 dB bandwidth of 1.88 Hz for that setup. That is a particular device’s bandwidth, not a general property of magnetic harvesters. Read the study.

Higher frequency does not guarantee higher power

Increasing frequency or coil size does not produce unlimited gains. An analysis of induction-based energy harvesting identifies skin and proximity effects at medium frequencies and radiation losses at high frequencies as factors that constrain output. Read the analysis.

How to judge a magnetic-harvesting claim

When evaluating a reported result, look for the conditions needed to interpret it rather than focusing on a single output number:

  • Field: Is it alternating or otherwise changing, and what strength and waveform were used?
  • Frequency: Was the device tuned to that frequency, and is a bandwidth reported?
  • Measurement: Is the result voltage, peak power, RMS power or power density? Was it measured under load?
  • Architecture: Does the device use induction or an MME structure, and what materials and geometry are involved?
  • Evidence: Is the number an experimental measurement or a modeled projection? Does a load demonstration apply only to the study’s own setup?

These details are necessary for a fair comparison. The cited studies do not establish one universally best design: the appropriate architecture depends on the field and the device’s size, coupling, frequency and intended load.

Can power-line magnetic fields run everyday electronics?

Research prototypes show that power-line-frequency magnetic fields can be harvested experimentally, including an IoT-sensor demonstration in one study. But that does not show that an arbitrary power line, room or appliance will provide enough energy to run a particular electronic device. Output depends on the field reaching the harvester and on matching the design to that field and the load.

The cited evidence consists of academic prototypes, models and experiments; it does not verify a ready-made consumer product for harvesting magnetic noise. Treat claims about powering everyday electronics from incidental magnetic fields cautiously unless they specify the field, frequency, hardware and loaded output.
