In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III on Xbox Series X|S, view the controller controls and change settings by pressing the controller’s Menu button, opening the Settings tab, and selecting controller settings. Activision says these options are available from the menus and during a match. Exact button assignments depend on the selected mode and preset, so check the in-game layout display rather than relying on a generic button chart.
How to open controller settings
- Press the controller’s Menu button.
- Scroll to the Settings tab.
- Open the controller settings to review or change the available options.
The official Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III controller guide says settings can also be accessed during a match. Labels and available choices may change with game updates, so use the settings shown in your installed version.

How to read the controls and layout presets
The official guide describes a default button layout plus 11 additional button-layout presets. Its Controller Basics card also lists 12 button-layout presets and six stick-layout presets. The options visible to you can depend on the selected mode and game version; inspect the in-game list before choosing.

Button Layout Preset changes which actions are assigned to buttons. The guide names Lefty and Tactical as examples. Stick Layout Preset changes what each stick controls; Southpaw and Legacy are examples. The indexed guide does not provide a complete button-by-button Xbox chart, so use the in-game layout display to confirm the assignments for your selected mode and preset.

Which controller settings should you adjust?
Stick sensitivity
Sensitivity affects how quickly your view or aim responds to stick movement. Activision calls it a key setting but does not prescribe a universal value. Try adjustments that suit your own control and aiming preferences rather than treating someone else’s setting as a standard.
Dead zones
Dead-zone settings affect crosshair behavior. Preferences differ, and the official guide does not identify one ideal value. Use the in-game options to find a response that feels appropriate for your controller.

Button and stick layouts
If the default arrangement feels awkward, review the available button presets before remapping individual controls. Consider which actions you use often and whether a layout lets you keep your thumbs on the sticks during those actions. Stick presets are a separate choice for players who prefer different stick functions; changing one does not mean changing the button layout.

When the same button can reload or interact, this setting determines which action takes priority. Activision suggests Prioritize Reload in Multiplayer and Prioritize Interact in non-Multiplayer modes, where players often use Supply Boxes and Buy Stations. These are publisher suggestions, not requirements; select the priority that best fits the mode you play.

Choosing a setup for your mode
- Check the current in-game button display for your chosen mode and preset before learning or sharing exact assignments.
- Choose a button layout by considering which actions move and whether frequent actions can be performed without taking your thumbs off the sticks.
- Choose a stick layout independently, based on which stick functions feel natural to you.
- Set reload or interaction priority to match the situations you encounter most often in that mode.
The guide is specifically for Xbox Series X|S. Activision’s Modern Warfare III editions FAQ also lists Xbox One availability and says players installing a cross-gen bundle should select the version for their console. Make sure you are using the version intended for your Xbox before following platform-specific guidance.
