Keep immediate parent-child links, derive ancestor paths when needed, and add explicit level metadata only when named ranks matter to users or rules.
Why fixed-level schemas become brittle
A model with fields such as category, subcategory, and subsubcategory builds a maximum depth into the data structure. Adding another level then requires schema changes and updates to the code that reads, validates, or displays it. A variable-depth model instead records concepts and their relationships. Each additional depth is another relationship, not another column.

This is a general modeling pattern, not a requirement to adopt a particular database. In a relational implementation, concepts and hierarchy links can be stored in separate tables; in an RDF implementation, concepts are resources connected by predicates. Choose storage based on your application and query needs.

Separate concepts, labels, and hierarchy
Give each concept a stable identifier. Treat its preferred and alternative names as labels, not as identifiers: labels may change, and a concept may appear at a different position in a revised scheme without becoming a different concept. Keep concept identity distinct from scheme membership and hierarchical placement.

The W3C’s SKOS Reference provides a standard model for knowledge organization systems, including taxonomies, classifications, and thesauri. It describes concepts, labels, notes, concept schemes, and semantic relations. SKOS is a vocabulary and data model, not a complete application architecture or a set of rules for how deep a taxonomy should be.
Represent the hierarchy with direct links
Store the immediate broader-to-narrower relationships that editors intend. In SKOS, skos:broader and skos:narrower express direct hierarchical links; they do not imply every indirect ancestor or descendant. The W3C says these properties are not transitive, and defines skos:broaderTransitive and skos:narrowerTransitive for transitive closure. An application that needs a full path can compute or materialize that closure rather than treating every ancestor as a direct parent.

This distinction matters in both editing and use. An editor needs to know the intended local link; a search feature may need all broader concepts to expand a query. Keeping direct assertions clear lets the application derive paths for retrieval without obscuring the underlying structure.

A strict tree gives each concept one broader concept. It is easier to navigate and validate, but cannot represent an item that genuinely belongs under more than one broader concept. SKOS permits a concept to have multiple broader concepts, supporting polyhierarchy when multiple classification contexts are meaningful. The W3C SKOS Primer explains this distinction and the different role of associative links.

Do not use hierarchy links merely to show that two concepts are connected. Use an associative relation such as skos:related when the relationship is meaningful but neither concept is broader than the other. Keeping these relation types distinct prevents a taxonomy from turning into an undifferentiated network.
- Prefer a single parent when each concept has one clear place and simpler navigation and validation are priorities.
- Allow multiple broader concepts when the domain has genuine overlapping classification contexts and users benefit from finding the concept in each.
- Use an associative link for a useful connection that does not express broader or narrower meaning.
Add level metadata only when levels mean something
Some classifications publish named ranks—such as section, division, class, or subclass—or attach rules to particular depths. In that case, record level semantics separately instead of making a fixed number of levels a prerequisite of the hierarchy model. FAO’s Caliper data-modeling guidance illustrates representing levels as collections of concepts and describes using an XKOS depth property to express generality.

If depth is only a display consequence of following parent links, a separate level field may add needless maintenance: a move can change a concept’s depth even though the concept itself has not changed. If level names or depth-specific rules are part of the published classification, explicit metadata can make those semantics available to consumers.
Version schemes and preserve mappings
Classifications evolve as concepts are added, renamed, split, merged, or moved. If downstream users need to compare or migrate between releases, make the scheme version explicit and retain correspondences between versions. Caliper provides an example using versioned concept-scheme URIs and version information, and distinguishes exact from close matches; close matches can describe correspondences that are not one-to-one.

Decide what a record’s classification reference means: a concept in the current scheme, or a concept in a particular released version. Explicit versioning helps consumers interpret old records and makes changes auditable. Keep mappings when users need to aggregate or translate data across versions, and do not label an imperfect correspondence as exact.
Make design choices against actual requirements
| Decision | Simpler option | More expressive option | Choose based on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parent count | One broader concept per item | Multiple broader concepts | Whether concepts genuinely belong in multiple hierarchical contexts, as allowed by the SKOS Primer. |
| Hierarchy traversal | Store and query direct links | Compute or materialize transitive closure | Whether users or search need ancestors and descendants beyond the immediate link; SKOS distinguishes direct from transitive relations in its Reference. |
| Depth semantics | Use the relationship graph alone | Add level collections or depth metadata | Whether the classification publishes named ranks or applies level-specific rules; see FAO Caliper. |
| Scheme changes | Replace the old structure | Version schemes and preserve mappings | Whether consumers need to compare releases or migrate data; Caliper illustrates version information and correspondences. |
| Governance | Allow informal editorial changes | Review changes and publish controlled versions | How costly inconsistent labels or links would be for users and downstream systems; GOV.UK’s taxonomy principles offer one context-specific example. |
Set rules for ongoing maintenance
An extensible model still needs editorial controls. Define who may create concepts, change labels, add or remove broader links, approve merges, and publish a new version. Establish how the system detects or reviews orphan concepts, cycles, duplicate labels, and concepts with only one child.
These choices are governance rules, not universal properties of a taxonomy. GOV.UK’s guidance, for example, discusses merging a single-child topic into its parent, moving it to the same level, or creating sibling topics under a new parent. It also describes cases where content can be tagged to a broader topic. Those are options from a government topic taxonomy, useful as review prompts rather than mandatory rules for every domain.

Quick Recap
A practical implementation sequence
- Define the concept. Decide what one item represents and assign it an identifier that does not depend on its current label or position.
- Choose relationship semantics. Specify what counts as broader, narrower, or merely related, and decide whether multiple broader links are allowed.
- Store immediate hierarchy links. Keep direct links as the editable structure; derive ancestor and descendant paths for functions that require them.
- Model levels if needed. Add named level or depth metadata only when the classification’s publication or rules depend on those distinctions.
- Plan scheme releases. Decide how versions are identified and whether consumers need mappings between them.
- Define validation and review. Set policies for cycles, orphans, duplicate labels, merges, and structural changes before the taxonomy grows.
