If a modded Minecraft Java LAN world is missing from the Multiplayer screen, first reopen the world with Esc → Open to LAN → Start LAN World and note the temporary port printed in chat. On the other computer, test Direct Connection with the host’s private IPv4 address and that port, such as 192.168.1.42:54321. A missing listing is often a discovery problem rather than proof that the server cannot be reached.

For a successful connection, both computers must use the same Java Edition release, loader, modpack contents, mod versions, dependencies and relevant configuration files. If Direct Connection also fails, check private-network permissions, Java firewall rules, VPN or antivirus filtering, and router client isolation before concluding that the modpack is broken.

What must be true for a modded LAN world to work
A LAN world is a temporary server created by the player hosting a single-player save. It is not a permanent server process: the host must have the world open, and the listening port can change whenever LAN is reopened. The two computers also need a local network path that permits peer-to-peer traffic.
Use Java Edition on every computer
LAN in this guide means Minecraft Java Edition. Java and Bedrock are separate editions and cannot join each other through the Java LAN workflow. Avoid preview, snapshot or otherwise different releases unless every player is deliberately running the same compatible build. The official Minecraft guidance treats matching versions as a requirement; with mods, “matching” means compatibility with the host’s exact game and loader build, not merely choosing the same major version.

Use one exact modded environment
Every participant should have the same Minecraft version, the same loader (Forge, Fabric or NeoForge), the same modpack release, the same individual mod files and versions, all required dependencies, and compatible configuration files. A profile exported by the modpack manager is safer than manually installing mods that appear similar. A single extra client-side or server-side file can produce a rejection even when the Multiplayer list is visible.
Connect through a communicating local network
Both devices must be on the same reachable LAN. A home Wi-Fi network normally permits this, but guest Wi-Fi, some cellular hotspots and VLANs can deliberately isolate clients. A wired computer and a wireless computer can still work together when they share the same non-isolated network; the connection method matters less than whether the router allows one local device to reach the other.
Step 1: Reopen the world and record the LAN port
- On the host computer, launch the intended Java Edition profile with the modpack fully loaded.
- Load the single-player world you want to share.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu and select Open to LAN.
- Choose the game mode and whether cheats are enabled, then select Start LAN World.
- Read the chat message immediately after the world opens. It displays a temporary port number, for example
54321. Write it down exactly.
The host must repeat this procedure after closing and reopening LAN. Do not assume yesterday’s port still applies: a new LAN session can use a different number. Keep the host inside the world while the other player connects; leaving the world closes the temporary server.
The official guide describes this workflow as loading or creating a world, opening the menu and choosing “Open to LAN.” The same guide notes that the client version needs to match the version running on the server; a modded LAN world adds the loader and modpack requirements described above.

Step 2: Confirm modpack and launch-profile parity
Before troubleshooting the network, compare the two installations. Network fixes cannot solve a client that is rejected because its content is different.
Compare these items in order

Use an exported profile instead of guessing
If the pack manager supports exporting or importing a profile, have the host export the known-working instance and give that profile to the other player. Manual selection often misses a dependency, retains an old configuration or installs a file for a different Minecraft release. CurseForge’s LAN guidance likewise says that modded play requires every player to have the exact same mods and versions.

First identify the version and loader that the host actually launched, then make the guest match it. If the pack has optional client-only additions, follow that pack’s documented rules; absent such documentation, identical profiles are the least ambiguous test.
Step 3: Distinguish discovery from the actual connection
Open Multiplayer on the guest and wait for a LAN entry. The game uses local discovery traffic to announce the temporary world. That announcement is separate from the Java connection to the host’s address and port.

When the LAN entry is missing
A blank or endlessly scanning Multiplayer screen can mean that discovery packets are blocked by a firewall, a network profile, VPN software, antivirus filtering or router isolation. It does not prove that the host’s listening socket is unreachable. This distinction is why Direct Connection is the next test rather than an optional extra.
When the LAN entry appears
Select the entry and try to join. If it produces a mod or version error, the network has probably found the host; return to the parity checklist instead of changing router settings. If it times out, use Direct Connection with the same host address and freshly recorded port so that the test does not depend on the announcement mechanism.
Step 4: Bypass the listing with Direct Connection
- On the host, find its private IPv4 address. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig; use the IPv4 Address on the adapter connected to the same home network. On macOS or Linux, use the active network interface’s local IPv4 address shown by the system’s network settings or a standard interface-status command. - On the guest, open Minecraft Java Edition and select Multiplayer.
- Select Direct Connection.
- Enter the host’s private address, a colon, and the port printed in host chat, for example
192.168.1.42:54321. Do not add spaces, and do not enter the router’s public internet address. - Select Join Server. Record the exact result, including whether it times out, is refused, or reaches a mod-compatibility screen.
CurseForge specifically recommends this fallback when the world does not appear: enter the host’s local IP address plus the LAN port shown in chat. A successful Direct Connection confirms that the underlying route works even if local discovery remains unavailable. You can use Direct Connection for future sessions, but verify the host’s current port each time the world is reopened.
Step 5: Check the network path before changing the pack
Verify the two devices are really on the same LAN
- Check the Wi-Fi name or Ethernet network on both computers.
- Ensure neither computer is connected to a guest SSID, isolated hotspot or separate VLAN.
- Compare private addresses. Addresses in the same home subnet often look similar, such as
192.168.1.xon both systems, but the appearance alone is not proof that routing is allowed. - Temporarily disconnect a VPN on both computers. Some VPN clients route or filter local traffic even when an option labeled “allow LAN” is present.
- If one device is on a phone hotspot, test with both computers on the same ordinary home network; many hotspots prevent clients from reaching each other.
Set the network profile to Private or Trusted
Operating systems commonly apply stricter inbound rules to a Public network profile. On a trusted home network, set the connection to Private or Trusted where the operating system provides that choice. Make this change only for a network you control. A profile change can restore discovery and Java connections without disabling the firewall.

Look for router client isolation
Routers and access points may offer settings named AP isolation, client isolation, wireless isolation or a guest-network separation feature. These prevent wireless clients from contacting one another. Disable isolation for the private network only if you understand the security impact, or move both computers to a network segment that permits local communication. If the router is managed by a school, hotel or workplace, you may not be able to change this policy; use a permitted network or a non-LAN server instead.

Allowing the Minecraft launcher alone may not be enough. The listening process is the Java runtime used by the selected profile, often shown as javaw.exe on Windows. Security software can also filter traffic independently of the operating system firewall.
Apply a narrow private-network rule
- On each computer, open the operating system’s firewall settings and review inbound and outbound permissions for the Java runtime used by the launcher.
- Permit that runtime and Minecraft on Private or trusted networks. Avoid enabling broad access on Public networks unless you have a specific reason.
- If the firewall asks about a new Java installation, approve the private-network option for the exact runtime that the modded profile launches.
- Review antivirus network shields, web filters and endpoint-security rules that may block local Java traffic.
- Retry Direct Connection while the host has the world open and the port visible in chat.
Do not treat a disabled-looking firewall as proof that traffic is unrestricted. A security suite can still filter packets, more than one Java installation can exist, and a rule may apply only to a Public profile. If you briefly disable a security product as a diagnostic, re-enable it immediately and create a limited private-network allow rule for the correct runtime.

What to do when vanilla works but the modded profile does not
A vanilla test can answer one narrow question: whether the two computers can generally find and reach a temporary Minecraft LAN server. It does not prove that a modded profile is compatible. If vanilla joins successfully, preserve the known-good network setup and compare only the modded variables.
Use a controlled comparison
- Confirm that both players selected the intended modded launcher instance rather than a similarly named vanilla profile.
- Compare the loader version and the complete mod-file list, including libraries that the launcher may install automatically.
- Check the modpack’s Minecraft release and remove stale files left from an earlier pack version.
- Compare configuration directories when the pack requires synchronized settings.
- Test with the host’s original profile and one freshly imported copy on the guest.
- If the pack offers a documented minimal or compatibility profile, use that profile as a controlled test rather than removing arbitrary mods.
Mods that alter networking, authentication, permissions or registry data deserve particular attention, but do not assume one is faulty solely because the LAN list is empty. Discovery can fail independently of mod initialization.

Common mistakes that make a correct setup look broken
- Using the wrong address: the guest enters the router’s public IP, an old address from another adapter or a VPN address instead of the host’s private IPv4 address.
- Reusing an old port: the host reopened LAN and received a different temporary port.
- Closing the host world: the guest tries to join after the host returned to the title screen.
- Mixing launchers or instances: one player starts vanilla while the other starts Forge, Fabric or NeoForge.
- Assuming “same Wi-Fi” means reachable: guest networks and client-isolated access points intentionally block peer traffic.
- Allowing only the launcher: the firewall rule does not cover the Java runtime that actually owns the listening socket.
- Changing many variables at once: replacing the pack, router settings and firewall simultaneously makes it impossible to identify the cause.
When LAN is the wrong architecture
LAN is appropriate when players are together on a communicating local network and one player can keep the world open. It is a poor fit for remote friends, isolated networks or a world that should remain available while the original host is offline. In those cases, a dedicated or hosted modded server is the practical escalation. The official Minecraft guidance treats private-server setup as a separate option rather than a continuation of the Open to LAN workflow.

Do not expose a temporary LAN port to the public internet as a substitute for a properly configured server. If the players are not on a network that permits local peer traffic, choose an architecture designed for remote access instead of weakening security controls blindly.
