The “Server closed the connection” message in 7 Days to Die is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The fastest fix is to identify whether every server fails or only one, then check build and mod parity before investigating world-transfer timeouts, Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC), authentication, NAT, and firewall settings.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted 7 Days to Die servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Use the decision path below in order. It separates client problems from server problems, avoids guesswork about ports, and gives a server owner the evidence needed to find the disconnect in logs.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat “Server closed the connection” actually means
Your client reached a point where the server ended the session or the connection disappeared while the game was joining. The message does not tell you whether the cause was a rejected build, a missing mod, an authentication failure, a timeout while downloading the world, or a network path that could not carry the traffic reliably.
A client log may show a line such as DisconnectedFromServer: Server closed the connection. That line records the result. The useful cause is usually a few lines earlier in the client log or in the dedicated server log. Treat the wording as a starting point for diagnosis rather than proof that the server hardware is down.

First, establish the scope of the failure
Before changing files or router settings, spend a minute determining how broad the problem is. The result changes who needs to act.
If every public server rejects you
A failure on multiple unrelated servers points toward your client, network, security software, EAC, or platform sign-in. Test at least one other public server, preferably one with a different region and map size. If each attempt ends with the same message, do not begin by asking one server owner to rebuild the world; start with the client and connection checks later in this guide.

If only one server fails
When other servers work, the affected server’s build, mods, configuration, world transfer, or network path is the leading suspect. Contact its owner or hosting provider and ask them to inspect the server log at the exact time of your attempt. A server owner can see rejection reasons that are not exposed in the client’s final message.
If the failure happens immediately
An instant return to the main menu usually means the join was rejected before the world finished loading. Version mismatch, mod mismatch, EAC, platform authentication, or an invalid server configuration should be checked before transfer-speed theories.
If it fails while downloading the world
A disconnect during “downloading world” is a different branch. Large maps, high latency, packet loss, a poor Wi-Fi link, a distant server, limited client memory, or a route that stalls can make the transfer exceed the server’s tolerance. Note the approximate percentage or stage at which it stops and whether the failure is repeatable.
If you disconnect after playing successfully
A session that works for minutes or hours and then closes points more toward intermittent packet loss, a changing network route, server resource pressure, or a host-side restart than a basic version mismatch. Record whether every player is removed at once or only one connection drops.

Fix 1: make the game build identical
The client and server must be on compatible builds. A hosting support guide recommends ruling out a version mismatch first when a player is rejected immediately after joining.
- Check the build shown by your game launcher or main menu.
- Ask the server owner for the exact build currently running; do not rely on a general label such as “latest.”
- Install any pending game update, then restart the launcher and the game.
- If the server recently updated, wait for the owner to finish updating and restarting it before testing again.
- If the server intentionally remains on an older build, use the platform’s available branch or version-selection option only when the owner confirms which build is required.
Do not compare only the operating system or the server’s advertised name. Two installations can display the same game title while running different revisions. If the owner cannot state the build, ask for a screenshot or log line containing it.
Fix 2: make the mod pack and mod builds identical
Every player needs the same mod pack installed as the server, including matching mod versions. One missing, extra, or outdated mod can terminate the join before the world opens.
Client checklist
- Write down the server’s complete mod list and compare it with the files in your local game installation.
- Remove obsolete copies rather than leaving two versions of the same mod in different folders.
- Install every required dependency named by the server owner.
- Check that capitalization, folder names, and version numbers match where the mod author uses them to identify a build.
- Restart the game after changing the pack.
Server-owner checklist
- Confirm that the deployed files are the intended release, not a partially uploaded update.
- Restart the dedicated server after adding, removing, or replacing mods.
- Tell players whether optional client-only mods are allowed; do not describe a pack as optional if the server requires it.
- Check the server log for a named assembly, asset, or dependency that failed to load.
If a clean, unmodded client can join while your normal installation cannot, use that result to isolate the mod set. Reintroduce mods in a controlled batch, restarting between changes, instead of changing several variables at once.

World transfer is the most common point at which a large map exposes an unstable route. A Steam Community moderator, SylenThunder, warned that taking longer than 15 minutes to download a map could lead to a temporary 15-minute ban attributed to packet loss. That timing is community guidance from 2020, not a guaranteed rule for every current server, so treat it as an indication that the server may enforce a transfer timeout or cooldown.
Reduce transfer risk
- Stop repeated attempts for a few minutes if the server may have temporarily blocked the connection after a failed transfer.
- Use wired Ethernet or move closer to the wireless access point. Avoid a congested guest network, mobile hotspot, or VPN while testing.
- Pause other uploads, cloud synchronization, game downloads, and streaming on the same connection.
- Try a server in a nearer region or a smaller world, if available, to distinguish route quality from a general client failure.
- Ask the owner whether the map is unusually large and whether other players are completing the download.
High ping or great distance can make transfer failure more likely; the same moderator identified either condition, or both, as a possible explanation. A slow transfer can also expose insufficient memory for a large map. If the owner reports that your machine does not have enough RAM to support the map, close memory-heavy applications and compare results with a smaller-world server before changing server settings.

How to interpret the result
- One attempt succeeds on a stable wired connection: the original path, Wi-Fi link, or congestion was likely involved.
- Every large map fails but small maps work: investigate map size, available memory, and the server’s transfer timeout.
- All servers fail at the same stage: inspect EAC, platform authentication, local firewall, and client installation.
- Only one map fails for everyone: the server owner should inspect the world files and host resources.
Fix 4: check Easy Anti-Cheat and platform authentication
EAC or platform-authentication errors can end a join even when basic connectivity is working. Look for explicit EAC, ticket, login, or authentication wording in the client and server logs. Do not infer an authentication failure from the generic disconnect line alone.
Repair the client-side installation
- Sign out of the platform account, close the launcher completely, sign in again, and retry.
- Run the platform’s file-integrity check for the game. In Steam, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Use the game’s EAC repair or reinstall option if the launcher exposes one, then restart the computer.
- Ensure security software is not blocking the game or EAC service. Test by creating an allow rule for the legitimate installation rather than disabling protection permanently.
- Retry after the game and platform have fully updated.
Release changes can affect this branch. For example, the Alpha 20 release notes documented a fix related to EAC password entry. If the problem began immediately after an update, compare the client and server update state and read the release notes for authentication changes before assuming your account is banned.
When authentication is server-side
If several players lose access simultaneously, the server owner should verify the server’s platform credentials, EAC configuration, and current service status. A single player’s sign-in problem should not be “fixed” by weakening the server’s anti-cheat settings.
Fix 5: inspect NAT, firewall, and routing on a self-hosted server
Self-hosting adds a network path that a managed server does not: the internet, your router, the host machine, and the game process all need to pass traffic in both directions. NAT or double-NAT can allow an initial connection while breaking the return path or world transfer.
Router and host checks
- Give the server computer a stable local address, either with a DHCP reservation or a correctly configured static address.
- Confirm that the game port configured in the server settings is forwarded to that exact local address. Do not copy a port from an unrelated guide; the required value depends on the game build and your configuration.
- Allow the game server executable through the host operating system’s firewall on the required network profiles.
- Check whether a second router, mesh gateway, or modem-router combination is performing NAT. If so, remove the extra layer, place one device in the appropriate bridge or passthrough mode, or forward traffic through both layers as your network hardware requires.
- Determine whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT). If the router’s public address differs from the address shown by an external service, inbound hosting may not work without a provider-side option or a relay solution.
- Restart the router and server process after changing forwarding or firewall rules, then test from outside your home network.
Do not expose administration interfaces or broad firewall rules just to make a join succeed. Forward only the game service, keep the operating system patched, and remove temporary test rules when troubleshooting is complete.
How to separate NAT from a game problem
If players on the same local network can join but people outside cannot, suspect forwarding, CGNAT, or the public address. If nobody can join, inspect the server process, its bind address, firewall, build, and mods first. If the public address changes periodically, give players the current address or use a properly configured dynamic-DNS service without publishing private credentials.

Fix 6: verify the server process and configuration
A dedicated server can accept a connection and then close it because the world failed to load, a required asset is missing, or the process ran out of resources. The owner should review the server console and log at the exact incident time rather than relying on a player’s final error line.
Server-owner review list
- Confirm the server process stayed running while the player attempted to join.
- Check for errors naming a world, mod, asset bundle, dependency, or permission failure.
- Look for memory pressure, process restarts, or a watchdog termination during world loading.
- Compare the configured world and game settings with the files actually deployed.
- Check whether a scheduled restart, backup, update, or host migration occurred at that time.
- Test with a temporary unmodded or smaller world only if doing so will not overwrite the production save.
Keep a backup before changing the world or mod set. A successful test on a copy proves that a configuration change helped without risking the live save.
Use the logs instead of guessing
Logs turn a generic disconnect into a branchable diagnosis. Capture the client log from the same attempt and ask the server owner for the corresponding server-side lines.
Useful client evidence
- The exact UTC or local time, including the time zone.
- Your in-game player name and platform account name, if different.
- The server name and address shown in the browser or connection screen.
- Your game build and platform.
- The complete mod list and mod versions.
- The stage of failure: immediate rejection, world download, loading screen, or in-game disconnect.
- Lines mentioning EAC, authentication, timeout, packet loss, version, mod loading, or a closed connection.
Useful server evidence
- The matching timestamp and player identity.
- The server build, active world, mod pack, and restart history.
- Connection, authentication, EAC, world-loading, and exception lines around the event.
- Whether other players joined successfully at the same time.
- CPU, RAM, and network symptoms if the server was transferring a large map.
Redact passwords, authentication tokens, private IP addresses, and unrelated players’ personal information before posting logs publicly. Send the full relevant block privately to the owner or host support team.

Hosted server versus self-hosted server: who should act?
Managed or rented server
You normally cannot change the provider’s firewall or NAT. Give support the incident time, player name, server name or address, client build, mod list, failure stage, and relevant log lines. Ask them to confirm the server build, restart history, world-transfer errors, and whether the server temporarily blocked the connection after repeated failed downloads.
A managed 7 Days to Die server hosting provider can inspect host-side logs and network configuration that a player cannot reach. Use a server log support ticket rather than opening repeated connections while support is investigating; repeated retries can make a temporary transfer cooldown harder to interpret.

Self-hosted server
The owner must validate the game process, local firewall, router forwarding, NAT layers, public address, build, mods, and host resources. Test from a different network, such as a friend’s connection, because a local loopback test can succeed even when internet forwarding is wrong.
Client recovery sequence
Use this order when you control only the player computer:
- Join a different server to classify the scope.
- Record the build and compare it with the target server.
- Synchronize the complete mod pack, remove duplicates, and restart.
- Sign in again, repair EAC if available, and verify game files.
- Retry on a stable wired connection with background traffic paused.
- Temporarily allow the game and EAC through the firewall, then retest and restore least-privilege rules.
- Capture the log and send a precise report if the failure remains.
Avoid deleting the save or reinstalling the entire game before checking versions, mods, and logs. A reinstall cannot correct a server-side mismatch or a blocked inbound route.
Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder
- Changing several things at once: updating the game, replacing mods, changing the router, and switching networks prevents you from knowing which change mattered.
- Assuming the message proves a ban: the text alone does not identify a ban; look for an explicit server or authentication message.
- Repeating a timed-out world download immediately: a server may enforce a temporary cooldown after a prolonged transfer.
- Using a random port list: port requirements can vary by build and configuration; confirm the configured service instead of copying stale numbers.
- Disabling security permanently: use a narrow allow rule for testing and remove broad exceptions afterward.
- Sharing incomplete logs: a screenshot of the final line omits the evidence needed to distinguish EAC, mods, transfer, and NAT.
- Testing only inside the host’s network: local success does not prove that internet forwarding works.
How to report the problem so it gets fixed faster
Send one concise report containing:
- Incident date and exact time with time zone.
- Player name and platform.
- Server name, address, and whether it is hosted or self-hosted.
- Client and server build numbers, if known.
- Complete mod list and each mod’s version.
- Whether another public server works.
- Failure stage and how long the world download ran.
- Relevant client and server log lines, with secrets redacted.
- Connection details that affect diagnosis, such as Wi-Fi versus Ethernet, VPN use, and whether you are behind a second router.
For a hosting support ticket, include the incident time and player name in the first sentence. Staff can then locate the matching event instead of searching an entire day of logs.
Preventing future disconnects
- Keep the client and server on a deliberately coordinated build rather than updating one side during an active play session.
- Maintain a written mod manifest with versions and dependencies.
- Back up the world before mod or configuration changes.
- Schedule updates and restarts, and tell players when they will occur.
- Monitor available memory and storage before introducing a much larger world.
- Prefer a stable wired connection for the initial world download.
- Document the server’s configured game port, local host address, firewall rule, and NAT layout for the owner’s use; do not publish sensitive router details.
- Keep a support template ready with timestamps, player identity, versions, mods, and log locations.
Bottom line
“Server closed the connection” identifies a disconnect, not its cause. Classify the failure by scope and timing, then check build and mod parity first. World-download failures require attention to transfer time, latency, packet loss, map size, and memory; EAC or authentication lines require platform and anti-cheat checks; self-hosted failures require a careful NAT, firewall, and forwarding review. When those checks do not resolve the issue, the incident time, player identity, versions, mods, and matching log excerpts give the server owner the information needed to find the real fault.
