What is available depends on your country and the specific game—and “modded” could mean a publisher-authorized modification, a game offered through an emulator, or an altered copy of a commercial app. Before installing anything, check the game developer’s official distribution information. If it does not document an authorized source, do not treat an unknown modified app file as a safe download.
What “modded game” means on iOS
The label can refer to three different things, and they do not have the same rules:

- A developer-supported modification: The game’s rights holder may authorize a modified version or a particular distribution route. Check the publisher’s official information for the exact game.
- A game offered by an emulator: Apple’s App Review Guidelines allow certain retro console and PC emulator apps to offer games, subject to Apple’s rules and applicable laws. This does not establish permission to download copyrighted game files from arbitrary sites. Apple App Review Guidelines, section 4.7.
- An altered copy of a commercial app: Whether a specific altered copy or its distribution is authorized depends on the game, the rights holder and applicable law. Apple’s emulator rule is not blanket approval for modified commercial games.
Where iPhone and iPad apps can be distributed
Apple says alternative app marketplaces and web distribution are available in Brazil, Japan and the European Union, in addition to the App Store; features vary by region. Installation is permission-based, and an eligible device may need a current version of iOS or iPadOS. Check Apple’s current alternative app distribution information for your country and device before following any installation instructions.

How to check whether a download route is legitimate
- Identify the exact game and modification. Use the game’s full name and the publisher’s own support or distribution pages to find out whether it supports the modification.
- Check your country and iOS version. Confirm the distribution method is available for your location and device through Apple Support. Do not assume instructions for another country apply to you.
- Verify the source. Prefer a route the game developer documents. If an alternative marketplace or developer website is involved, confirm the identity of its operator and that the game publisher authorizes the specific app or content.
- Understand the review status. Apple says App Store apps go through App Review as well as baseline notarization checks. Alternatively distributed apps undergo notarization checks, but that is not the same process as App Review and is not a guarantee that an app is safe or publisher-authorized. Apple’s EU documentation describes checks for accuracy, functionality and safety, and installation checks intended to help ensure apps have not been tampered with and come from an authorized marketplace or approved developer website. - Check what happens after installation. Look for the publisher’s update and support instructions, and consider whether the marketplace must remain available for the app to keep working.
Risks and controls to understand
Support and marketplace continuity
Apple says its ability to support problems with apps downloaded outside the App Store is limited; this may affect help with app quality and safety, privacy, scams and fraud, payments, subscriptions or refunds. Apple also warns that an app from an alternative marketplace could stop working if the marketplace ceases operations or is removed from the device. These limitations are described in Apple’s alternative distribution support page.
Screen Time and purchases
To restrict alternative installations, Apple’s current instructions are: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Installations & Purchases. From there, set App Marketplaces and Web to Don’t Allow. Apple cautions that some controls, including restrictions on in-app purchases, may not apply to purchases in apps distributed outside the App Store. What security research does—and does not—show
A 2026 preprint abstract about underground third-party iOS app stores in Iran reports security and privacy risks involving altered binaries. Its scope is that particular ecosystem; it does not provide a general risk rate for modded games across iOS. Read the abstract at arXiv.
