Knowing Playwright can make its test style feel familiar—but it does not mean browser tests already cover native mobile behavior. Mobilewright still requires mobile-specific configuration, Apple or Android development tools, and a simulator, emulator, or connected device.
What Mobilewright tests—and what Playwright emulation does not
Mobilewright is a framework for automating end-to-end tests of iOS and Android applications. Its TypeScript APIs and Playwright-like testing concepts are intended to make the workflow recognizable to people who already write Playwright tests. The framework targets mobile app screens on simulators, emulators, and real devices, rather than merely changing how a desktop browser presents a website. Mobilewright describes its approach here.

Playwright’s mobile emulation is useful for mobile websites: it can simulate browser characteristics such as viewport, screen size, user agent, and touch, with additional context settings such as locale and geolocation. That helps test how a site behaves in a mobile browser context; it does not, by itself, exercise a native app or validate device-specific APIs. See Playwright’s emulation documentation.

Its requirements and limitations differ from Mobilewright’s iOS-and-Android app automation. The distinction matters: “mobile testing” might mean a mobile website, a browser or WebView on Android, or an installed app on a device. Choose the tool for the thing you need to test. Playwright’s Android documentation describes that separate path.

How much Playwright knowledge carries over?
Mobilewright’s homepage says, “If you’ve written a Playwright test, you’ve already written a Mobilewright test.” That is the vendor’s positioning, not a guarantee that an existing browser test suite can run unchanged against an app. Familiarity with Playwright-style test structure and interactions can ease the transition, but the app, target platform, device, and mobile toolchain still need to be configured.
- Likely familiar: a TypeScript workflow and Playwright-inspired testing concepts.
- Still mobile-specific: the app’s bundle ID, platform selection, installed app package when needed, and a device target.
- Still environment-specific: Apple’s tools on macOS for iOS, or Java and Android SDK tools for Android.
What you need before the first local run
Mobilewright’s setup documentation specifies Node.js 22.12 or newer and requires a booted simulator or emulator, or a USB-connected device. It does not start a simulator or emulator for you. Its documentation describes the following platform prerequisites; check the current requirements before setup because tool requirements may change with releases.
| Target | Documented local requirements |
|---|---|
| Both platforms | Node.js 22.12 or newer and a booted simulator/emulator or USB-connected device. |
| iOS | macOS 13 or newer, Xcode, and Xcode Command Line Tools. |
| Android | JDK 11 or newer, Android SDK, ANDROID_HOME, and adb available on PATH. |
These prerequisites make Mobilewright different from a browser-only setup: the machine running tests must have the relevant mobile development environment, and a test target must already be available.

The getting-started flow asks for a language, test directory, and app bundle ID, then scaffolds project files and installs dependencies. In configuration, the platform is ios or android, and the app is identified by its bundleId. The documentation also shows an installApps option for supplying an .ipa or .apk. Project settings can specify a device type—simulator, emulator, or real—and constrain the operating-system version. A single configuration can define separate iOS and Android projects. See Mobilewright’s project configuration documentation.

Choose local or cloud devices based on coverage needs
Start with a simulator or emulator
A simulator or emulator is a practical way to begin without buying dedicated hardware. It is still a real execution target for the framework, and it must be booted before the test run; Mobilewright does not launch it on your behalf. Use this route when it fits the app behavior and platform coverage you need.
Use a real device when hardware or configuration matters
Mobilewright documents USB-connected devices and real-device project selection. A physical Android phone or iPhone can be appropriate when a test depends on actual hardware or a particular device configuration. Select hardware according to supported OS versions, test requirements, and budget; no particular model is established here as certified. A simulator or emulator may be enough for an initial workflow.

Consider cloud devices for a broader matrix
Mobilewright documents drivers for Mobile Next Cloud, BrowserStack, and TestingBot, and its cloud documentation describes increasing workers to allocate cloud devices. This provides an execution option for teams that need access to more device and OS combinations than they maintain locally. The documentation does not establish current service plans, device counts, pricing, availability, or comparative performance, so verify those details directly with each provider before choosing one. See Mobilewright’s cloud-device documentation.
Which approach fits your test?
| Approach | Target under test | Platforms and environment | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright mobile emulation | Website in a browser context | Simulated browser characteristics such as viewport, user agent, and touch. | Checking mobile-web layouts and browser-facing behavior. |
| Playwright Android API | Chrome for Android or Android WebView | Android device or AVD emulator; experimental support with documented requirements and limitations. | Browser or WebView automation when its scope and limitations match the test. |
| Mobilewright | iOS or Android application | Local simulator/emulator, connected real device, or documented cloud-device drivers. | App end-to-end automation across mobile platforms and device targets. |
The official documentation supports these scope and setup distinctions, but it does not provide independent benchmarks comparing speed, reliability, or cost. Decide based on the target you need to exercise and the device and OS coverage your team must maintain.
