Choose the right orientation for the format, improve light and sound before buying gear, and test a live stream privately before your audience arrives. For a mobile live, first check that your channel meets YouTube’s eligibility requirements.
Plan the video before you press record
Start by deciding where and how people will watch the finished video. YouTube recommends holding the phone horizontally for high-definition 16:9 footage. Portrait or square framing may suit a different destination, but it changes how the image fits the screen. Pick the format before recording so you do not crop out important details later.

For a live stream, choose portrait or landscape based on the viewing experience you want. Vertical live streams may appear in YouTube’s mobile vertical live feed. YouTube Live Control Room can create horizontal and vertical formats together; the vertical version is a center crop by default, so keep the subject and other essential details within the area that will remain visible.

Make a better phone video with what you have
Set up the camera
Use the rear camera when practical; YouTube describes it as the better choice for visuals. Silence notifications so they do not interrupt recording. If your camera app offers manual controls, lock focus and exposure to avoid distracting changes in sharpness or brightness during a take.

Use soft, even light
Good light is often a bigger improvement than new equipment. Indoors, face a window for soft, even illumination. Outside, move into shade to reduce harsh shadows. A white card can bounce light back onto a dim side of the subject; a reflector is an optional alternative.
Get clear speech
Move close enough to the phone’s microphone for speech to be intelligible, keep the mic unobstructed, and avoid noisy locations or movement that can distract from the sound. Soft furnishings can help reduce the effect of hard, reflective room surfaces. In a loud environment, consider an external microphone, checking that it works with your phone and its connector.

Record and upload
On Android, YouTube’s app upload flow can record a new video or let you select an existing file. YouTube says a square or vertical video of three minutes or less may be uploaded as a Short. App behavior can change, so confirm the format and upload options in the current app before publishing.
Check mobile live-stream eligibility first
YouTube’s mobile live-stream help lists these requirements: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, live streaming enabled, no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and a supported device. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance sets the minimum age at 16. Check your channel’s current eligibility before planning an event, since account status and platform requirements can change.

Prepare and test a live stream from your phone
- Charge and quiet the phone. Charge it before going live and enable Do Not Disturb to avoid interruptions. YouTube says an external battery pack can come in handy for a longer stream.
- Choose and lock orientation. Decide on portrait or landscape before starting, then lock rotation so the frame does not shift unexpectedly.
- Test the internet connection. Check that your connection is stable where you will be streaming. A private rehearsal can reveal connection problems before the public event.
- Choose the camera and chat setup. The front camera lets you see chat; YouTube describes the rear camera as better for visuals. A second device can display chat while you use the rear camera.
- Run an unlisted test stream. YouTube recommends testing video and audio with an unlisted live stream. Check framing, focus, exposure, speech clarity, and whether the connection holds before inviting viewers.
- Start the planned live. Once the test looks and sounds right, end it and start the event using the orientation and setup you rehearsed.
YouTube’s mobile filming tips estimate that streaming uses about 1% of phone battery per minute. Treat that as an approximate platform tip, not a device-specific guarantee: actual battery use varies by phone and conditions.
Choose gear only to solve a real problem
