In 2026, the mobile technologies most likely to affect everyday users are AI features split between phones and cloud services, eSIM, evolving 5G, satellite links for some devices and places, and connected wearables. 5G-Advanced is still an evolution of 5G, while 6G remains in standards development—not a generally available consumer network. Whether any feature works for you depends on your phone, software, carrier, plan and country.
How do these technologies differ in maturity?
Some are features appearing in consumer devices; others are network changes or standards work. This distinction matters: an industry goal or draft requirement is not a promise that a particular phone or carrier offers the feature.

What does on-device AI mean on a smartphone?
On-device AI means that at least some AI processing—often called inference—runs on the phone rather than entirely in a remote data centre. Smartphone chipsets increasingly include neural processing units (NPUs) and other AI accelerators, which can support those tasks. In practice, AI features may also rely on the operating system, an internet connection and cloud computing.
Local processing is not the same as fully offline AI
Processing a task locally can reduce latency, dependence on a cloud connection and some exposure of data to remote services. It does not establish that all of a feature’s work stays on the phone, that it works offline, or that its handling of personal information is private in every respect. Those details depend on the particular feature and its implementation.

GSMA Intelligence expects hybrid AI—combining device and cloud processing—to become common. It also advises AI providers to be clear about limitations such as accuracy, consistency and hallucinations. A useful way to assess a phone feature is to check:
- Which tasks run on the device and which require a cloud service?
- What works without an internet connection?
- What information is sent off the device, and how is it handled?
- How consistent and accurate are the results for the task you care about?
- What phone hardware, software version or account is required?
In GSMA Intelligence’s Global Consumer Survey, conducted in August 2025 across 12 countries, 53% of surveyed consumers said AI capabilities were somewhat or very important when replacing a smartphone. That is a measure of stated preference, not the share of phones with AI or proof that a given feature is useful. As GSMA Intelligence puts it, “Ultimately, consumers will judge AI by the tangible value it delivers, not its underlying compute model.”
What is the difference between eSIM and iSIM?
An eSIM is a digitally provisioned SIM capability integrated into a device. An iSIM puts that capability within a device’s chipset. Both change how a device can be provisioned for a mobile network; neither removes the need for a carrier service or plan.

GSMA reports that eSIM adoption is broadening beyond premium smartphones. It also identifies iSIM as relevant to the Internet of Things and lower-cost device segments. Before relying on either, check whether the exact device model and your carrier support it, how activation and transfer work in your market, and whether the model has a physical SIM slot if you need one. Regional versions of the same phone may differ.
What is 5G-Advanced, and is 6G available yet?
5G-Advanced builds on 5G
5G-Advanced is an evolution of ongoing 5G work, not a separate consumer network that every 5G phone automatically receives. GSMA Foundry lists it among areas being developed to support use cases such as AI-driven services, robotics, immersive experiences and differentiated connectivity. These are development goals, not promises of a specific speed, service or experience for every handset and carrier.
For a consumer, the practical question is whether a particular carrier has deployed a capability in the places where it is needed and whether the phone and plan support it. A “5G” label alone does not answer that.

6G is in standards development
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls sixth-generation mobile systems IMT-2030. In its March 2026 update, ITU said Working Party 5D had finalized draft technical performance requirements in February, describing 20 requirements, including seven new 6G-specific requirements. Formal approval was expected later in 2026.
These draft requirements are for evaluating future radio interfaces. They establish minimum evaluation levels, not a guarantee of deployed performance. ITU states: “While the requirements establish minimum performance levels, they do not restrict implementation approaches or guarantee real-world deployment performance.” Standards work is therefore not evidence that commercial 6G service is generally available.
Can a phone connect directly to satellites?
Direct-to-device satellite links are part of a developing approach to connect satellite and terrestrial mobile networks. GSMA Foundry identifies non-terrestrial networks and direct-to-device connectivity as innovation priorities. Such links may complement ground-based coverage, but they are not a universal replacement for cell service.

Capabilities can differ: a service may support only particular features, such as messaging or emergency communication, and may require a supported device, carrier service or plan. Country availability also matters. Check the relevant carrier’s current terms for supported models, locations and functions rather than assuming a satellite-capable phone can connect anywhere.
IEEE Standards Association notes that hybrid ground-and-space networks add operational complexity and need interoperability standards. That is one reason satellite connectivity is not simply a matter of adding a satellite radio to a handset.

Phones increasingly serve as hubs for wearables, PCs, smart-home devices and vehicles. Smart glasses are an emerging wearable category: voice, cameras and contextual AI can enable hands-free interactions. Their usefulness depends on more than the glasses themselves—compatibility, supported apps, battery life, privacy and data sharing, and whether features work across operating systems all matter.

GSMA’s Mobile Economy 2026 report put smart-glasses adoption at around 2% on average across 12 major developed markets. That snapshot should not be read as a global adoption rate. The same report said more than 2 million second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses had been sold as of early 2025; the product launched in October 2023. It also cited a plan by Meta and EssilorLuxottica to reach production capacity of 10 million units annually by the end of 2026. That figure is a planned capacity, not a confirmed production result.
Why should consumers care about network architecture and interoperability?
Open RAN and multivendor network systems are primarily operator and enterprise concerns, not settings most phone owners choose. IEEE Standards Association describes selective Open RAN deployment in rural coverage, private networks, greenfield builds and network modernization. Combining equipment and systems from multiple vendors can also create challenges in integration, lifecycle management, tuning and interoperability.
These behind-the-scenes choices can influence how networks are built and maintained. Cybersecurity, digital sovereignty and data interoperability are central network concerns, but the presence of a particular architecture does not by itself tell a consumer whether a service is secure or reliable.
What should you check before counting on a mobile feature?
Availability is specific to the combination of device, software, carrier, geography and service plan. Even broad coverage figures do not confirm that a particular feature works at a particular address: the European Commission’s 2026 5G Observatory reported basic 5G coverage of 96.8% of the EU population and 87.9% of its rural population.
Quick Recap
- Device: Confirm the exact model and regional variant support the feature.
- Software: Check required operating-system versions, settings, accounts and app support.
- Carrier and plan: Verify activation, service terms and feature availability directly with the carrier.
- Location: Look for country-specific and local coverage information; national or regional coverage does not ensure service everywhere.
- Limits: Find out what works offline, what depends on cloud processing or network access, and what data is shared.
- Interoperability: For wearables and connected devices, check compatibility with your other hardware and the apps you use.
