Mobile Bank Deposit: What It Means and How It Works

Mobile bank deposit lets eligible customers submit check images through a bank app. The bank’s own rules determine processing, limits and when funds are available.

A mobile bank deposit is a way to submit images of an eligible paper check through a bank’s mobile app for deposit into an eligible account. It avoids taking the check to a branch or ATM to submit it, but the bank still has to process the deposit, and submitting it does not necessarily make the money immediately available.

What mobile bank deposit means

Mobile bank deposit, often called mobile check deposit, is an app feature for depositing a paper check by photographing its front and back. It is not a way to deposit physical cash through a phone. Bank of America describes its own service as allowing customers to deposit checks through its app instead of visiting a financial center or ATM; that description applies to its service, not every bank’s terms. How to deposit a check with a mobile app

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm that your bank accepts the check type and that the account you want to use is eligible. Limits and conditions can vary by account and institution.
  2. Open the bank’s app and select mobile deposit. Choose the eligible account and enter the amount shown on the check.
  3. Endorse the check as instructed. Some banks require restrictive wording for mobile deposits. Use the exact wording in your bank’s app or current guidance rather than assuming one phrase works everywhere.
  4. Photograph both sides. Wells Fargo recommends a well-lit setting, a plain dark surface, holding the camera directly above the check, and including all four corners within the image guides. Follow your bank’s own capture instructions.
  5. Review and submit. Check the selected account, entered amount, endorsement and images before sending. The bank may show an on-screen or email confirmation that it received the submission or is processing it.
  6. Follow the bank’s instructions for the paper check. Keep it secure for any period the bank specifies, and do not submit the same check again through another channel after a successful submission.

What happens after submission

A confirmation is not proof that a check has cleared, nor a guarantee that the funds are ready to spend. Submission, processing and funds availability are separate stages. Check the transaction status, your available balance and any hold notice in the app. The bank’s funds-availability terms determine when you can use the money; there is no universal timing that applies to every mobile deposit.

Limits, fees and timing depend on the bank

Deposit limits, eligible check types and accounts, cutoff times, processing schedules, fees and holds vary among banks and may depend on the account. Use the limit and terms shown in your own app or account disclosures. For example, Wells Fargo says limits for eligible accounts are shown in its app, while Bank of America says its own mobile check deposit service has no additional fee. Neither statement establishes the terms at other institutions.

If the app rejects the deposit or cannot read the check

  • Confirm the account and check type are eligible.
  • Check that the entered amount matches the check and that the endorsement follows your bank’s instructions.
  • Retake both images with clear lighting and all four corners visible.
  • Follow the bank’s stated next step or contact the bank if the app still cannot accept the deposit. There is no single remedy that applies to every institution.

Mobile deposit, ATM or branch?

Mobile deposit can save a trip when your bank accepts the check and you can capture it clearly. An ATM or branch is another way to submit a paper check. Compare the channels using your bank’s eligibility rules, limits, cutoff and processing schedule, fees and funds-availability policy. The available bank guidance does not establish that one channel is always faster or better.
