Choose MP4 for broad device, browser, or publishing compatibility when you have confirmed the destination supports the codecs inside the file. Choose MKV when you need a flexible file that can bundle selectable audio and subtitle tracks, chapters, and metadata. Neither extension guarantees playback or determines picture quality: the codecs, settings, player, and intended workflow matter too.
MKV and MP4 are containers, not codecs
A container packages encoded video and audio tracks along with information such as subtitles, chapters, and metadata. A codec is what encodes or decodes the media itself. Matroska’s technical introduction describes MKV as a container, and the IETF’s RFC 9559, published in October 2024, specifies Matroska as an EBML-based audiovisual container. MP4 is also a container; the .mp4 extension does not tell you which video or audio encodings a file contains.

That distinction is the key to comparing them. Two files with different extensions might contain the same encoded video, while two MP4 files can require different decoder capabilities. A codec string can identify details such as an AVC profile and level; the word “MP4” alone cannot.

Which format works on more devices?
MP4 is usually the safer starting point when a file must play across a broad mix of devices, browsers, or publishing systems. That is a practical default, not a promise: compatibility still depends on the video codec, audio codec, profile, level, resolution, frame rate, subtitle type, and any features such as HDR.

MKV is not automatically incompatible. A device or app that supports Matroska and the file’s codecs can play it normally. Support can also differ between apps on the same operating system. Microsoft’s Media Foundation documentation, for example, describes MKV handling in that particular Windows framework and notes limitations involving captions, attached fonts or images, menus, and supplemental files referenced by chapters. Those details should not be generalized to every Windows player.
For browser playback, MP4 is familiar and broadly supported, but support varies by browser and platform. Check the actual browser or app and the codecs it can decode rather than relying on a general claim about the operating system.

How to choose for your workflow
Choose MP4 for general playback or delivery
Use MP4 when your priority is a widely used delivery format, or when an upload specification explicitly asks for it. Before exporting or converting, confirm that the target accepts the file’s exact video and audio codecs and their settings. If a service names a required container-and-codec combination, follow that specification instead of assuming every MP4 is suitable.

Use MKV for an archive or playback setup where you want several selectable audio or subtitle tracks, chapters, and associated metadata in one file. This is most useful when you control the playback environment or have confirmed that its player supports Matroska and the particular codecs and track features you rely on.

For streaming, follow the platform’s specification
A format that works in a local video player is not necessarily accepted by a streaming or publishing workflow. Apple’s HLS authoring guidance is one example: it specifies fMP4 for HEVC, and fMP4 or MPEG-TS for H.264 in that context. Treat such requirements as specific to that delivery system, not as a universal rule for all video streaming.

Yes, but the details differ. Matroska is explicitly designed to carry selectable audio, video, and subtitle streams, along with chapters and metadata. MP4 supports MPEG-4 Timed Text and chapter-marker constructs, but the exact capabilities and player behavior are not identical to Matroska’s. Apple’s archived technical note describes differences in how chapter markers are represented and limits in MP4 metadata provisions.

Before choosing a container, check the subtitle encoding and whether the target player supports the styling or track selection you need. In Microsoft’s documented Media Foundation context, caption tracks may not be selected by default, and some attached fonts or images and menus may not render or display. If a file depends on specialized subtitle styling or menu features, test it in the actual target player.

It depends on what the conversion does. If compatible encoded streams are copied into a different container without re-encoding, the encoded video data need not change. If the video or audio is re-encoded, the new encoding settings can change quality and file size. A container change by itself is not a quality setting.
Not every track or metadata item can necessarily be copied into another container, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal tool workflow. Check stream compatibility and keep a backup before converting. If your goal is only wider playback compatibility, first identify which codec or track is unsupported; changing the extension alone will not fix it.
Before you export or convert: a compatibility checklist
- Check the destination’s current requirements for the container and the exact video and audio codecs.
- Confirm supported codec profiles and levels, resolution, and frame rate for the specific device, app, browser, or upload workflow.
- Verify subtitle format, track selection, chapter, metadata, and HDR support if your file uses those features.
- Inspect the file’s stream information; do not infer the codecs from the filename extension.
- Test a short sample in the actual target player or service before converting a full library or exporting a final copy.
