To reduce dropped frames, measure your upload speed, then set your stream’s bitrate below the stable upload capacity available during the broadcast. Lowering bitrate is usually the quickest adjustment; Ethernet, pausing competing uploads, and checking your route to the platform can address instability. A higher speed-test result alone does not guarantee a stable stream.
What upload speed does live streaming need?
There is no single upload-speed target for every stream. The required capacity depends on the stream’s total bitrate, including any backup stream, plus room for normal network variation and other devices using the connection. Upload speed is the outbound capacity that matters here; a fast download result does not establish that your upload is fast enough. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% headroom (YouTube Help: Streaming tips).
Platform guidance uses different rules of thumb rather than one universal guarantee. OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Twitch’s general rule is upload speed equal to the stream bitrate plus 30%; its example says a 6 Mbps stream should have at least 8 Mbps upload. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Treat these as platform-specific starting points, not promises that a connection will remain stable at those levels.
Measure the connection that will carry the stream
Test upload at the right time
- Run a reputable speed test while the connection is otherwise quiet. Record the upload result, the time, and whether other users or devices were active.
- Repeat the test at the time you usually stream. Congestion can make available capacity differ from a quiet-period result.
- Use the upload figure, not the download figure, when judging whether the connection can carry your stream. If you send a primary and backup stream, account for both bitrates.
Verify during a realistic test stream
Make a private or unlisted test stream and watch the encoder’s network or dropped-frame statistics as well as the platform’s stream-health indicator. Include motion and audio similar to what you expect in the real broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health (YouTube Help: Streaming tips). A speed test is a snapshot; it does not test every moment of the connection or the route to the platform’s ingest server.

Set bitrate, resolution, and frame rate to fit
Reduce bitrate first
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. If it is too close to your best-case upload result, ordinary fluctuations or other network use can cause dropped frames. Lower the encoder bitrate and test again. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the set bitrate (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, September 30, 2024).
OBS’s 75% starting point, YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation, and Twitch’s bitrate-plus-30% rule are different guidance. Use a conservative margin when results vary, rather than treating a peak speed-test result as sustainable capacity.

Use the destination’s encoder recommendations
YouTube’s published bitrate chart distinguishes codecs. For the listed modes below, its H.264 recommendations are higher than its AV1/H.265 recommendations. These are encoder settings, not minimum internet-plan speeds:
| Output mode | YouTube H.264 recommendation | YouTube AV1/H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube Help’s Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; the retrieved page does not show a publication date. Do not apply its H.264 values blindly to another codec or platform. If bitrate reduction makes the picture unacceptable, try a lower resolution or frame rate, then consult the current recommendations for your destination and codec.

Check keyframes, but do not expect them to raise upload capacity
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Keyframe interval is an encoder setting, not a way to increase raw upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Fix local network problems before upgrading service
Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unreliable
Connect the streaming computer directly to the router with Ethernet if practical. OBS recommends a wired connection for streaming and notes that faulty cables can also be a cause (OBS Project). Ethernet can remove a weak or congested Wi-Fi link from the path, but it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet service. If Ethernet is not practical, test near the router and reduce competing wireless use as a diagnostic; the available platform guidance does not quantify a speed gain from moving or changing Wi-Fi equipment.

Free up the uplink
- Pause cloud backups, file uploads, and other transfers from the streaming computer.
- Ask other people on the shared connection to avoid heavy uploads while you stream.
- Check other devices and applications that may be sending data in the background.
Other devices can use the upload bandwidth your stream needs. Twitch notes that upload use by other devices affects streaming, and YouTube notes that shared networks can limit the bandwidth available to an individual stream.

- Confirm the configured bitrate. Lower it, run another realistic test, and compare encoder statistics and stream health.
- Check the physical connection. Reseat or replace a suspect Ethernet cable, or test wired instead of Wi-Fi if possible.
- Restart networking equipment. Restart the modem and router, then repeat the test.
- Check software and drivers. Review VPN, security, or bundled network-optimization software that could affect the connection, and update network drivers.
- Test another ingest server. A short test on a different server or service can help identify a route- or service-specific problem. It is a diagnostic, not necessarily a fix.
- Contact your ISP if the issue persists. Share the times of the problem, upload test results, connection type, and whether the issue occurs across different servers. A faster service tier matters only if the current upstream capacity is inadequate.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these potential causes. Its advice does not guarantee a specific result; equipment, ISP conditions, Wi-Fi, and the route to the ingest server all matter.

Use OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
OBS dynamic bitrate can lower the bitrate when the connection is congested, which may reduce dropped frames. The trade-off is lower video quality while it adjusts. It does not fix the underlying congestion or route problem.
