For a standard YouTube upload, choose MP4. YouTube explicitly recommends an MP4 container and lists it among supported upload formats. MKV is not in YouTube’s general supported-format list, though YouTube separately says MKV has been tested for HDR uploads. The right choice also depends on the codecs and encoding settings inside the file—not just its extension.
MKV vs MP4: the practical difference for YouTube
MKV and MP4 are containers: they package video, audio, and related data into a file. They are not video codecs. For example, H.264 is a codec that can be carried in a container; changing a file’s extension from .mkv to .mp4 does not convert its contents or make its encoding compatible.

YouTube’s official guidance does not establish that MP4 inherently looks better, produces smaller files, uploads faster, or processes faster than MKV. Recommended settings for a standard YouTube upload
When exporting a conventional video, use YouTube’s recommended settings as a compatibility checklist. Its guidance specifies:

- MP4 layout: put the moov atom at the front of the file (often called “Fast Start”) and avoid edit lists, which YouTube says might prevent correct processing.
These are YouTube’s recommended upload settings, not a claim that every other combination will fail. Its settings page also gives bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate; choose a suitable value for your export rather than treating bitrate as an advantage of one container over another. When MKV makes sense—and what HDR changes
If your recording or editing workflow produces MKV, the extension alone does not tell you whether the contents meet YouTube’s needs. YouTube’s general supported-format list does not include MKV, so MP4 is the safer export choice for a standard upload. For HDR, however, YouTube explicitly names MKV alongside MOV/QuickTime and MP4 as containers tested to work. That exception applies to HDR guidance; it does not make MKV the general preferred format. How to convert or re-export a video that is already MKV
- Check the actual export settings. In your video-editing or conversion software, inspect the container, video codec, frame rate, scan type, and audio settings. Do not rely on renaming .mkv to .mp4.
- Export a compatible MP4 when needed. For a standard upload, select MP4 with H.264 video and YouTube’s recommended audio and layout settings where available.
- Preserve the source characteristics deliberately. Match the recorded frame rate and choose resolution and bitrate appropriate to the footage. If the video is HDR, retain the required HDR metadata and use YouTube’s HDR guidance.
- Upload the newly exported file. Check the result in YouTube Studio after processing. YouTube recommends using editing software to inspect or change settings when an upload has audio or video problems; paid software is not a requirement stated in that guidance. YouTube upload troubleshooting.
Uploading a video is not the same as live streaming
“MKV vs MP4 for YouTube streaming” can mean either uploading a finished file or sending a live broadcast. The container decision above concerns a prerecorded upload. YouTube Live instead receives an encoder output using live-stream settings and ingest protocols such as RTMP/RTMPS, then transcodes the stream for viewers.
