How to Run Polls and Trivia in a YouTube Live Stream With Kahoot!

To run Kahoot! trivia during a YouTube Live broadcast, host the game on the computer you use for the broadcast and share its screen to YouTube. Viewers watch the questions on the stream and participate through Kahoot!’s player flow. YouTube’s native Live Chat polls are a separate feature: they collect answers in chat but do not connect to Kahoot!.

What you need before going live

  • A YouTube channel enabled for livestreaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no livestreaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility and setup guide.
  • A Kahoot! account and the game you plan to host. Open the game in Kahoot! and confirm the current host controls before the event; join instructions and account-plan limits can vary and should not be assumed.
  • A broadcast route that can share the Kahoot! screen. YouTube’s webcam workflow requires a connected webcam and microphone for screen sharing. An encoder is another option for a more involved production, but is not required just because you are using Kahoot!.
  • A tested sharing choice: entire display, application window, or browser tab. Kahoot! says the scoreboard and correct answers appear only on the host’s screen, so avoid sharing host-only information unintentionally.

For a large audience, Kahoot! recommends checking its bandwidth guidance. Test the exact game and screen-sharing route before viewers arrive.

Run the Kahoot! game on your YouTube stream

  1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube, schedule a live event if you want to announce it in advance. Choose the webcam, mobile, or encoder route that fits your setup. The precise controls differ by route.
  2. Start hosting in Kahoot!. Find the game in your account and start a live hosted game. For remote play, Kahoot! recommends showing questions and answers on players’ devices. Review what appears on the host display before sharing it.
  3. Start the YouTube stream and share the game. In the webcam workflow, open Live Control Room, go live, select Share screen, then choose the display, window, or tab containing the game. YouTube documents this screen-share option for its webcam workflow; an encoder or other route has different controls and prerequisites. See YouTube’s webcam livestream instructions.
  4. Explain how to join and answer. Before starting a question timer, tell viewers where to find Kahoot!’s current join instructions and how to submit an answer. Check the host screen for the current PIN or other participation details rather than relying on outdated instructions.
  5. Keep the pace readable. Give viewers time to read, join, and answer. Kahoot! advises not speaking over the timer music; wait until answers are in, or lower or mute the game music.
  6. Check what viewers can see. Confirm the stream shows the intended question and public game content, not the host-only scoreboard or correct-answer information. If necessary, share a different window or tab.

Kahoot! identifies YouTube Live as a service that can publicly share a remotely hosted game screen. Its guidance is at How to host kahoots remotely.

Kahoot! trivia or a YouTube Live Chat poll?

Option What viewers do What it is suited to Important distinction
Kahoot! hosted game Watch the shared game on YouTube and participate using Kahoot!’s player flow. Trivia or a hosted game experience. The host shares the game screen; Kahoot! notes that the scoreboard and correct answers are host-screen-only.
YouTube Live Chat poll Vote in the stream’s chat. A native poll for viewers already using YouTube chat. Create it from the bottom of the Live Chat window and end it there to see results in chat. YouTube’s documentation does not establish a connection between these polls and Kahoot!.

YouTube’s steps for its native poll are in Create a live poll. Choose it when you want a chat poll, not a Kahoot! trivia session.

Plan for delay, audience size, and screen privacy

Viewers may not see the broadcast at exactly the same moment you see the host screen. Give clear instructions and enough time for participation rather than assuming everyone is watching in sync. The official guidance cited here does not establish a quantitative delay comparison or a current Kahoot! participant cap, so check the current host interface for audience limits and test with the broadcast route you intend to use.

  • For a small test, verify the sequence from starting the game through seeing the question on the stream.
  • For a larger audience, check Kahoot!’s bandwidth guidance and test the stream under the conditions you expect.
  • Before sharing, inspect the selected screen or window for host-only answers, scoreboard details, notifications, or other private content.

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start a YouTube livestream. The channel may not meet YouTube’s eligibility requirements or may have a restriction. Confirm channel verification, age eligibility, and livestreaming status in YouTube Studio and review YouTube’s livestreaming requirements.
The stream is live, but viewers cannot see the Kahoot! screen. The screen share may not have started, or the wrong display, window, or tab may be selected. In YouTube’s webcam workflow, confirm screen sharing is active and the intended source is selected. Check that a webcam and microphone are connected for that workflow.
Viewers see the host’s scoreboard or answers. The shared source includes host-only content. Change the sharing source and preview it before continuing; Kahoot! says scoreboard and correct answers appear on the host screen.
Viewers are unsure how to join or answer. The instructions were not explained before the timer, or the host is relying on outdated steps. Pause before the next question and give the current participation instructions shown by Kahoot!’s host interface.
Participation feels rushed or hard to follow. The timer, music, stream delay, or bandwidth conditions may make interaction difficult. Allow more time, avoid speaking over timer music, and check the bandwidth guidance for a large audience.

Copyright and stream eligibility

Livestream eligibility and permission to use content are different questions. Make sure you have the rights needed for any music, video, or other material included in the game or broadcast, and review YouTube’s current policies before streaming. A game being shareable does not itself establish that every media item used with it is cleared.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your YouTube channel also needs to keep uploaded video playing when you are not hosting a live Kahoot!, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded uploads, not a camera-based Kahoot! broadcast. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
