Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor an OBS prerecorded-stream workflow, MKV is the safer choice for recording, while MP4 is often more convenient for editing and handoff. OBS can play either format as a Media Source, so you usually do not need to convert a file just to use it in a stream. Choose based on recording reliability, codec compatibility, and the destination workflow—not the filename extension alone.
MKV vs. MP4 at a glance
| Format | If recording is interrupted | Compatibility and workflow | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| MKV | OBS says an unfinished MKV recording remains playable and recoverable after an interruption. | Some editors or downstream workflows may have weaker support; remuxing may be needed. | Recording a master when resilience matters, then remuxing if MP4 is required. |
| Regular MP4 | OBS warns that interruption before finalization can leave the file unrecoverable. | Broadly compatible with internet video and editing workflows, though the embedded codecs still matter. | Delivery or editing when compatibility is the priority and interruption risk is acceptable. |
| Fragmented MP4/MOV | Written in self-contained chunks, avoiding the same dependency on a finalization step. | OBS describes better support than MKV, but some editing suites may still need remuxing, especially with lossless or uncompressed audio. | A compromise when the specific editor and codec combination supports it. |
| OBS Hybrid MP4/MOV | OBS says these formats can recover if writing aborts and produce a regular-looking file on completion. | Codec support differs between variants. OBS Hybrid MP4 supports AV1; Hybrid MOV supports ProRes. | Consider only when the installed OBS version and codecs match the workflow. |
OBS recommends MKV for most recording use cases because it can be remuxed into a more compatible format. See the OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.

Should you record in MKV or MP4 in OBS?
Use MKV when protecting a recording against an unexpected shutdown or crash matters. A regular MP4 needs finalization; if recording stops abruptly before that step, OBS warns the file may not be recoverable. MKV avoids losing the whole recording in that situation, though recovery is not a guarantee against every kind of storage or hardware failure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Choose regular MP4 directly when the downstream editor or delivery workflow specifically needs it and you accept the risk of an interrupted recording. Otherwise, recording to MKV and remuxing afterward separates the safer recording format from the more convenient handoff format.

Can OBS play an MKV file as a Media Source?
Yes. OBS Media Source accepts both MKV and MP4, and includes controls to loop media and restart playback when the source becomes active. For a prerecorded show, add the file as a Media Source, enable looping if it should repeat, and configure restart behavior deliberately. The supported file extensions are documented in OBS Media Sources.
Container support does not guarantee that every file will behave identically. Video and audio codecs inside the container, the OBS version, and the destination platform all affect compatibility. OBS describes H.264 as broadly playable and AAC as widely used, but the platform or editor’s own requirements take precedence. Check the codec guidance in the OBS formats guide, then test the exact file in the complete streaming setup.

How to convert an OBS MKV recording to MP4 without re-encoding
- Record to MKV. In OBS, open Settings > Output > Recording and choose MKV as the recording format. OBS recommends it when unforeseen interruptions are a concern.
- Finish and check the recording. Stop OBS recording normally when possible, then confirm the MKV plays and contains the expected video and audio.
- Open the remux tool. In OBS, use File > Remux Recordings, select the MKV recording, and start remuxing.
- Verify the MP4 in its destination. Open the resulting file in the intended editor or playback workflow and confirm audio, video, and seeking work as expected.
Remuxing changes the container rather than encoding the media again; it does not make unsupported codecs compatible by itself. OBS also provides an option to automatically remux recordings after recording stops. The controls and workflow are covered in the OBS Standard Recording Output Guide.
When OBS Hybrid formats are worth considering
OBS introduced Hybrid MP4 in version 30.2 and Hybrid MOV in version 32.0. They write fragmented media and soft-remux it on completion. OBS describes them as resilient if writing aborts, while resulting files appear like regular MP4 or MOV files. Hybrid MP4 supports AV1; Hybrid MOV supports ProRes. Confirm your installed OBS version, codec needs, and editor support before switching; see the OBS Hybrid MP4 & Hybrid MOV guide.

Rehearse the complete prerecorded stream
For a fixed show, test the exact MKV or MP4 as a Media Source in the scene and run a full rehearsal through the intended destination. Check that playback starts at the intended point, loops or restarts as expected, and that both audio and video remain in sync. The title does not specify a destination platform, so its ingest requirements cannot be assumed; consult that platform’s current specifications as well as your editor’s codec requirements.
