Set your key light slightly above eye level and about 30–45 degrees to one side of the camera. Add a softer fill on the opposite side, beginning at roughly half the key’s intensity, then place a subtle backlight behind and above you to illuminate your hair or shoulders. Treat those positions as starting points: judge the result in your camera preview and adjust for your room, fixtures and desired contrast.
What three-point lighting does
Three-point lighting uses three sources for distinct jobs: the key provides the main illumination on your face, the fill controls shadows created by the key, and the backlight helps separate you from the background. The aim is not to make every part of the image equally bright; it is to shape the face while keeping the subject clear against the scene.

You do not necessarily need three expensive fixtures. A window can serve as a key, and a reflector can bounce existing light back as fill. A practical starting kit is two or three continuous sources such as LED panels, ring lights or softboxes, with stands and diffusion as needed. Desk lamps or lights you already own can help you learn the positions before buying equipment.

What to use in a small streaming space
Choose equipment according to how you can place and control it, rather than relying on a universal wattage or lumen target. The sources do not establish one brightness specification that works across different rooms, cameras and distances.

- Light source: Continuous lighting lets you see the effect in the camera preview while you adjust it. LED panels, ring lights and softbox-equipped fixtures are possible options.
- Diffusion: A diffuser or softbox spreads the light and can soften harsh shadows. Check that the modifier is compatible with the fixture.
- Control: Dimming, and adjustable color where available, make balancing sources easier.
- Placement: Check fixture size, stand footprint, mounting compatibility, power needs and the distance at which you will use the light.
- Alternatives: A stable window can contribute as a key; a reflector can bounce light and sometimes take the place of a powered fill source.
A Godox demonstration of cosmetic livestream lighting uses softboxes for front key and fill, plus lights behind the presenter for hair and profile separation, along with separate background and environmental lighting. It is a manufacturer’s example of one arrangement, not a minimum equipment list or an independent product test.
Set up the lights in order
- Control competing room light. Reduce overhead lighting or window light if it creates unwanted shadows or changes during the stream. If a window provides useful, stable soft light, face it and use it as a possible key.
- Position the key first. Put the brightest source slightly above eye level and to one side of the camera. Start around 30–45 degrees: VDO.Ninja suggests about 45 degrees, while Vimeo suggests around 30 degrees. Check the camera image for harsh shadows, glare and highlights that lose facial detail. Adjust the angle, height, distance or diffusion before adding more lights.
- Add the fill on the opposite side. Use a softer source to lift the key’s shadows. Begin around half the key’s intensity, then tune it in the camera preview. Lower it if your face looks flat; raise it if shadows hide too much detail. The right balance depends on your fixtures and the contrast you want.
- Add the backlight behind you. Place it above head level, outside the camera frame, and aim it down toward your hair or shoulders. Dim it until the edge of light is visible but not distracting. Its job is separation from the background, not a bright outline.
- Balance the whole image. Inspect the live camera preview rather than relying on how the room looks to your eyes. Check for light spilling onto the wall, distracting reflections and inconsistent color. Adjust the lights’ angles, distance and diffusion; match color temperatures where possible.
Tune the look without flattening the face
Make changes one at a time and use the camera image to evaluate them. Start by getting the key’s direction and softness right; then bring in only enough fill to control the shadows. A strong fill can erase the shape created by the key, while too little may leave detail difficult to see. Keep the backlight restrained so it outlines the subject without calling attention to itself.

Room geometry, fixture size, distance, camera exposure and the look you want all affect the result. The suggested angles and half-intensity fill are starting relationships, not fixed standards. There is no supported universal wattage prescription for this setup.
Fix common three-point lighting problems
- Harsh facial shadows: Add diffusion, move or angle the key, or raise the fill until the shadow detail looks right.
- Glare in glasses: Change the key’s angle slightly and check the camera image again.
- Washed-out face: Reduce light intensity or move the lights farther away.
- Flat-looking face: Reduce the fill so the key continues to shape your features.
- Bright outline or visible backlight: Dim or reposition the backlight; keep it outside the frame and aimed at hair or shoulders.
- Uneven or inconsistent color: Match the color temperatures of multiple sources where possible, and prevent changing daylight from disrupting a steady setup.
- Shadows on the wall: Change the source angle or placement to reduce spill onto the background.
