If an MKV video plays without sound on Windows, first check whether the silence affects only that file or also other files and players. Then identify the MKV’s audio track and codec. MKV is a container, not a guarantee that every audio codec inside it is supported; the right fix depends on the codec, Windows version, player and audio output.
1. Find out whether the problem is limited to one file
Play a known-good audio or video file, then try the silent MKV in another playback app. Note which apps you tested and whether other apps on Windows produce sound. If several files are silent in several apps, focus on the Windows audio or playback path; if only one MKV is affected, inspect that file and its track first. These checks narrow the possibilities but do not prove a cause. Microsoft’s Windows playback troubleshooting guidance also covers general problems such as no sound.

2. Check whether the MKV contains an audio track
In VLC, open the file and choose Tools → Codec Information. Look for an audio stream and note its codec name. VLC documents this route for inspecting a file’s codecs: VLC FAQ.

3. Try another audio track in the file
An MKV may contain more than one audio track, such as different languages or mixes. In your player, open its audio or track menu and select another available track, then replay the file. Not every player exposes track switching. Microsoft’s MKV playback documentation says its playback path selects the first audio track when one or more are present, so testing a different listed track can help distinguish a track-selection issue from a broader playback issue: Microsoft’s MKV Media Source documentation.
4. Compare playback in a second player
If the file is silent in Windows Media Player, try VLC; if it is silent in VLC, try Windows Media Player. Sound in one app but not another points to a difference in player support or configuration, but by itself does not prove the file is intact. Microsoft lists the formats supported by Windows playback, while VLC provides its own codec inspection and playback path. See Microsoft’s MKV documentation, Windows Media Player supported file types, and the VLC FAQ.

5. Check whether Windows supports the audio codec
Compare the codec you found in VLC with Microsoft’s supported MKV audio codecs, which include AAC, AC-3, MP3, MPEG-1 audio and PCM. A supported container does not mean that every codec or playback configuration will work in every app or on every device. Microsoft’s references are MKV Media Source and Windows Media Player supported file types.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPay particular attention to AC-3 (Dolby Digital). Microsoft says AC-3 was included before Windows 11 version 24H2, but is no longer included with Windows by default starting with version 24H2. A PC maker may have preinstalled it, and an upgrade from an earlier Windows version retains it. Check your Windows version and the file’s actual audio codec before installing anything. Microsoft’s codec FAQ describes the change.

Video codec extensions such as HEVC, VP9 and AV1 address video support; installing one is not an audio fix. Microsoft’s extension information is at Video codec extensions.
6. Install a codec only when you have identified the missing one
If the codec is unsupported on your Windows setup, seek a specific, reputable option from the codec maker or a clearly identified Microsoft Store extension when one is available. Avoid broad codec packs as a first step: Microsoft warns that some codec packs can cause serious playback problems or system corruption. A codec installation also will not solve every cause of silence; Microsoft notes, “Not all Windows Media Player playback problems involve codecs.” Microsoft’s codec FAQ covers codec downloads and compatibility.

- In VLC, open Tools → Preferences.
- Set Show Settings to All.
- Go to Audio → Output module and select a different module.
- Save the change, restart VLC and test the MKV again.

8. Update or repair Windows Media Player and the audio path
If the issue is specific to Windows Media Player or affects broader Windows playback, check for Windows updates and current audio drivers, then follow Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps for the Windows Media Player version you use. Available repair or reset controls and their menu paths can differ by player version and Windows release. Microsoft’s guides are Fix sound or audio problems in Windows and Repair or reset apps in Windows.
Which fix should you try first?
| What you find | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Other files and apps also have no sound | The issue may be broader than this MKV. | Check Windows audio, updates and drivers. |
| The MKV has no audio track listed | The file may not contain an audio stream. | Check the file source or try another copy. |
| The file has multiple audio tracks | The selected track may not be the one you want. | Test another track in a player that supports selection. |
| Only one player is silent | Player support or configuration may differ. | Compare with another player and inspect codec support. |
| The track uses AC-3 on Windows 11 version 24H2 | AC-3 is no longer included by default in that release. | Confirm whether it is installed before seeking a specific codec option. |
| VLC detects a track but has no sound | The output configuration may be involved. | Test another VLC output module. |
Work through the checks in order and stop when sound returns. Changing codecs or repairing a player before identifying whether the issue is file-specific, track-specific or system-wide can add unnecessary changes without addressing the cause.
