Mistral AI announced a public preview of Mistral Large 4, nicknamed “Le Chonk,” on October 6, 2026. The company describes it as a multimodal, roughly 1-trillion-parameter open-weight model and says it outperforms any open-weight model developed in the United States or Europe. That ranking is Mistral’s claim; the weights have not yet been released for independent testing. Le Monde reports that their planned release date is October 27, while Mistral’s announcement says only that it is working toward a release later in October.
What is Mistral Large 4?
Large 4 is Mistral AI’s newly announced model, currently labeled “Public Preview” in the company’s documentation. The documentation identifies its version as v26.10 and describes a granular Mixture-of-Experts architecture. “Le Chonk” is the informal nickname used for the model, not a separate model or product.

Mistral calls Large 4 multimodal. Its documentation lists a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder, and the company says a significant share of the model’s training data covered more than 160 languages, including every official language of the European Union. The language figure is Mistral’s statement; it is not an independently audited count.
What do the model’s parameter figures mean?
Mistral’s documentation lists 1.05 trillion total parameters and 52 billion active parameters. In a Mixture-of-Experts model, total parameters count the model’s full collection of learned parameters, while active parameters refer to the portion engaged for a given input. The two figures therefore describe different aspects of the model and should not be treated as interchangeable measures of compute or deployment needs.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
- 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
- PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
- Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
There is a small discrepancy across published accounts: Axios reports 49 billion active parameters, whereas Mistral’s documentation lists 52 billion. For the current specification, the official documentation is the clearest reference; the difference is worth noting when comparing reports.
How strong is Mistral Large 4?
Mistral says Large 4 is competitive with the strongest open models globally and “significantly outperform[s] any open-weight model developed in the US or Europe.” That is a company claim, not an independently established ranking based on released Large 4 weights.
Le Monde reports a preliminary score of 63% on Deep SWE 1.1, attributing the result to Mistral. It also notes that the company’s results await confirmation in independent rankings. A single reported score does not establish superiority across tasks, and the available sources do not provide a complete, comparable benchmark table.

Axios reports that Mistral said it trained the model on 4,000 Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs over two months in the company’s European data centers. Those training details are attributed to the company through Axios, rather than independently verified here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When are the Mistral Large 4 weights due?
Mistral’s October 6 announcement says it will share further architecture, benchmark, and post-training details as it works toward releasing the weights later in October. It does not specify a day. Le Monde reports October 27 as the planned release date and says security testing would be completed before the weights become available. Treat October 27 as a reported plan, not a date confirmed in Mistral’s announcement.
Once the weights are available, researchers and developers can test the model directly. Useful comparisons should identify the model version, task, and evaluation method, and use the same setup across the models being compared. Until then, Mistral’s broad ranking statement and the reported preliminary score should not be mistaken for reproducible results.
