Choose a named model and endpoint for your workload—not “Mistral” versus “Llama 3” as if they were equivalent services.
What are you comparing: a model family or an API?
Mistral AI documents a hosted inference catalog, pricing, model lifecycle information, regional inference, and an API reference. “Llama 3,” by contrast, names a Meta model family. Meta’s catalog describes models that can be deployed in different environments, but the catalog reviewed here does not establish a comparable Meta-hosted API offer or its service terms.

That distinction changes the buying decision. A model publisher develops or releases a model; an inference host operates the endpoint you call. If you use a hosted Llama endpoint, compare the named Llama model and the host’s actual endpoint against a named Mistral model and Mistral’s endpoint. If you deploy Llama yourself, compare a self-hosted system with a hosted API—not just one model against another.
Which model versions belong in the comparison?
Mistral models
Mistral’s current inference catalog lists models including Mistral Large 4, Medium 3.5, and Small 4. The price examples below use those exact names where possible. Mistral Large 3 also has a listed price, but it is a distinct model version from Large 4. Do not transfer a price or capability claim from one version to another.

Llama 3 models
Meta’s catalog groups several generations and sizes under the Llama 3 label. It describes Llama 3.3 as a text-only, instruction-tuned 70B model; Llama 3.2 as including lightweight 1B and 3B models plus vision-capable 11B and 90B models; and Llama 3.1 as available in instruction-tuned 8B, 70B, and 405B versions. These are not interchangeable choices: size, vision support, and task requirements affect which one is a sensible counterpart to a Mistral model.
For example, a text-only Llama 3.3 70B comparison does not answer whether a vision-capable Llama 3.2 model is suitable for image inputs. Likewise, a family-level comparison cannot establish which model will produce better results on your prompts. The answer requires matching the task and testing the exact versions you plan to deploy.
What do the published prices establish?
Mistral AI’s pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists the following standard per-million-token prices. Rates can change, so check the selected model’s current price before budgeting.

| Model or figure | Input per 1 million tokens | Output per 1 million tokens | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral Large 3 | $0.50 | $1.50 | Mistral AI listed API price |
| Mistral Medium 3.5 | $1.50 | $7.50 | Mistral AI listed API price |
| Mistral Small 4 | $0.15 | $0.60 | Mistral AI listed API price |
| Llama 3.3 70B | $0.10 | $0.40 | Price shown in Meta’s model-page panel; the reviewed page does not identify the provider or establish comparable endpoint terms |
The Llama 3.3 70B panel figure is not enough to establish a confirmed Meta-hosted API rate. It may be useful as a lead to investigate, but verify who provides the endpoint, whether the price is available to you, and what usage and service terms apply before treating it as an API quote. The two rows are not a like-for-like provider comparison.
How do token mix and discounts change the bill?
Input and generated output are charged at different rates. To make the effect concrete, consider a workload with 1 million input tokens and 250,000 output tokens. Applying the Mistral AI rates above gives the following arithmetic before any eligible discounts, taxes, or other charges:
| Model | Calculation | Estimated token charge |
|---|---|---|
| Mistral Large 3 | (1 × $0.50) + (0.25 × $1.50) | $0.875 |
| Mistral Medium 3.5 | (1 × $1.50) + (0.25 × $7.50) | $3.375 |
| Mistral Small 4 | (1 × $0.15) + (0.25 × $0.60) | $0.30 |
This is a pricing illustration, not a measured workload or a quality-adjusted comparison. Your own estimate should use your expected input and output volumes, the exact model’s rates, and the host’s billing rules. Long responses can materially change a comparison because output rates differ from input rates.

Cached input and batch processing
Mistral AI’s pricing FAQ, accessed October 7, 2026, says batch processing can reduce its listed price by 50% and cached input can reduce input cost by up to 90% for repeated prompts. Treat those as conditional discounts, not automatic reductions: confirm that your request pattern qualifies and that the selected model and endpoint support the relevant billing treatment. The FAQ does not make those discounts a basis for comparing an unspecified Llama host.
Which one is better for your task?
The official catalogs identify model families and capabilities, but they do not establish a neutral, like-for-like performance winner. Meta’s page includes benchmark comparisons; those are publisher-reported results under the methodology listed there, not an independent test of your application. A benchmark or general model description cannot substitute for checking your own tasks.
For a decision you can defend, compare exact model versions with the same representative prompts, input data, output limits, and scoring criteria. Include latency measurements from the regions and endpoints you would actually use. Score task success, factual accuracy, formatting, refusal behavior, and any vision or tool-use capability your application needs. The evidence summarized here contains no independent head-to-head test, so it cannot support a claim that one named model is more accurate or faster.

- For a text-only workload, compare text-only candidates and keep prompt and output limits consistent.
- For image understanding, select a model with the required vision capability rather than assuming every family member supports it.
- For cost-sensitive tasks, evaluate price alongside the quality needed to complete the task; a lower token rate alone does not establish lower cost per successful result.
- For production, measure latency and failure behavior on the actual provider endpoint, not only in a benchmark or local setup.
Does open-weight deployment make Llama cheaper?
Deploying model weights yourself changes the cost calculation, but it does not make the model free to operate. Hosted token charges are replaced or supplemented by the resources and work needed to run the endpoint: compute, deployment, scaling, monitoring, security, and ongoing operations. The material available here does not establish a hardware configuration or a cost calculation for either model family, so it cannot show that self-hosting is cheaper for a particular workload.
It also changes the comparison. A self-hosted Llama deployment should be assessed against a hosted Mistral API on total operating cost, control, and service needs—not against the API token rate alone. Mistral’s Mistral 3 announcement describes self-hosting support paths for that specific family; it does not mean every Mistral model has the same deployment options.
What do the licenses allow?
“Open weights” and a publisher’s use of “open source” are not, by themselves, a substitute for reading the license that applies to the exact model and version. Meta’s catalog describes Llama models as deployable, but verify the applicable Llama license and conditions for your intended use before commercial deployment.

Mistral’s guidance says most of its open models use Apache 2.0, while some use modified MIT terms, and directs users to the model cards for explicit terms. Mistral’s Mistral 3 announcement identifies that family as Apache 2.0; do not generalize that license to unrelated Mistral models. Mistral’s Help Center also describes a $20 million monthly revenue threshold for a modified-MIT exception applying to certain models: companies above that threshold must obtain a commercial license or use Mistral Studio. That condition is model-specific, not a family-wide rule. Check the model card and current license for the candidate you will actually use.
How should you choose an API provider?
A model catalog and per-token rate do not establish whether an endpoint meets your production requirements. Before choosing a hosted service, verify the current terms for the specific endpoint and region you will use.
- Availability and regional routing for your required deployment locations
- Latency, rate limits, and behavior when the service is busy or unavailable
- Uptime commitments and support arrangements
- Privacy, retention, and data-use terms for prompts and outputs
- Model version availability, lifecycle notices, and any migration requirements
- Billing details, including treatment of cached input, batch jobs, and failed requests
The official Mistral materials separate model selection, pricing, lifecycle, regional inference, and API documentation. Meta’s reviewed Llama catalog does not establish comparable hosted API rate, routing, service commitments, or data terms. Obtain those details from the provider whose endpoint you would actually call before making a production commitment.

Practical verdict
Choose Mistral when you want to evaluate a documented Mistral-hosted inference endpoint and can verify that its named model, current rate, and service terms fit your application. Choose a Llama model when its specific capabilities or deployable weights fit your needs, but select and evaluate the actual host—or account for self-hosting operations—before calling it an API choice. For cost, compare the same token mix and endpoint conditions; for quality, test the exact models on your own tasks. The available evidence does not justify naming one overall winner.
