As of October 7, 2026, its newest high-profile release was Mistral Large 4, available in public API preview while its weights were still expected later in October, according to Mistral.
What is Mistral AI?
Mistral AI is a model developer and AI platform provider. Its catalog spans models that users can access through hosted services as well as models released with downloadable weights and named licenses. Those are different access and usage arrangements: a model’s availability, license, and deployment options depend on the specific model, not just on the Mistral name.

The practical question is therefore not simply whether “Mistral” is open or closed. It is which model fits the task, how you intend to run it, and what terms apply to that exact version. Mistral’s live model catalog is the place to confirm current names, versions, service status, and license labels; the details can change.

Which Mistral models do what?
The following overview reflects Mistral’s catalog and announcements available by October 7, 2026. Specifications and capability descriptions below are company-reported, not independent test results.
#1 Best Overall
| Model or family | Best understood as | Access and key details |
|---|---|---|
| Mistral Large 4 | A large multimodal model for instruction, reasoning, and agentic tasks. | Public API preview announced October 6, 2026. Mistral said weights were expected by the end of October; they had not yet been released as of October 7. |
| Mistral Small 4 | A single model combining instruction following, reasoning, image input, and coding or agentic capabilities. | Announced under Apache 2.0. Mistral reports a 256k context window and a configurable reasoning-effort setting. |
| Mistral Large 3 | A general-purpose multimodal model in the Mistral 3 family. | Announced under Apache 2.0. Mistral described it as having 675 billion total parameters and 41 billion active parameters. |
| Ministral 3 | Smaller dense models aimed at edge and local deployment. | Announced in 14B, 8B, and 3B sizes under Apache 2.0. Mistral named NVIDIA DGX Spark, RTX PCs and laptops, and Jetson devices as deployment targets; actual hardware needs vary. |
| OCR models | Document understanding and structured text extraction. | Consult the current catalog for the available version, access route, and license. |

Mistral Large 4: a preview with weights still pending at the snapshot date
In its October 6, 2026 announcement, Mistral described Large 4 as a multimodal model with 1 trillion total parameters and 49 billion active parameters. The company also said it is natively fluent in more than 160 languages and brings instruction, reasoning, and agentic capabilities together. These are Mistral’s own descriptions and specifications, not independently verified performance findings. At the October 7 information cutoff, API preview access had been announced and the weights were expected by the end of that month, so preview access should not be confused with a completed weights release.
Mistral Small 4: several capability types in one model
Mistral announced Small 4 in March 2026 as an Apache 2.0 model intended to combine instruction-following, reasoning, image input, and coding-agent use. Mistral reports 119 billion total parameters and 6 billion active parameters per token, or 8 billion when embedding and output layers are counted. It also lists a 256k context window and a configurable reasoning-effort parameter. The parameter counts and context figure are published specifications, not measures of how well a model will perform on a particular task.

Mistral 3 and Ministral 3: larger general use and smaller deployment targets
Announced in December 2025, the Mistral 3 family includes Large 3 and dense Ministral 3 variants at 14B, 8B, and 3B. Mistral announced the family under Apache 2.0 and described it as multilingual and multimodal. It positioned Ministral for edge and local deployment, and named NVIDIA DGX Spark, RTX PCs and laptops, and Jetson devices as targets. Those examples are not a universal hardware recommendation: feasibility depends on the particular model, quantization, inference software, and the speed or quality you need.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistral described Large 3 as having 675 billion total parameters and 41 billion active parameters, and said it was trained using 3,000 NVIDIA H200 GPUs. These figures describe the company’s model and training claims; they do not indicate the hardware a user needs to run an available version.

Specialist tools address narrower workflows
Mistral’s catalog also separates out OCR, audio, code-completion, embedding, and moderation offerings. These are not interchangeable general chat models: OCR is relevant to extracting information from documents, audio models to speech and transcription, code-completion models to coding workflows, embeddings to retrieval or similarity, and moderation models to filtering. For each, check the specific catalog entry rather than inferring a license or deployment path from another Mistral model.
How to choose a Mistral model
Start with the job you need done, then verify the exact model and delivery route. A model that suits a hosted chat workflow may not be the right choice for local inference or document processing.

- Match the task. Decide whether you need general conversation, reasoning, coding, image or document understanding, audio processing, retrieval embeddings, or moderation.
- Choose a deployment route. Determine whether a hosted API, a cloud or platform partner, or self-deployment is appropriate. Preview availability, partner listings, and service status can change.
- Read that model’s license and terms. Apache 2.0 applies to the announced Mistral 3 and Small 4 releases, but it is not a blanket license for the whole catalog. Hosted services and other catalog entries may have different labels or conditions.
- Check runtime needs. For local use, account for model size, quantization, inference stack, memory, and your desired performance. Mistral’s named hardware targets for Ministral do not establish minimum or recommended consumer configurations.
- Confirm language and modality fit. Verify the support claimed for the particular model and version. Broad family descriptions do not guarantee equal results across languages or input types.

October 6, 2026: Large 4 public API preview
Mistral announced Large 4 for public API preview and said downloadable weights were expected by the end of October. As of October 7, that was a planned release, not an already completed one. Check the current catalog or model announcement for any later change in availability.

Mistral described regional inference, broader access to third-party open models on its platform, and long-term European compute capacity as parts of its sovereignty strategy. These statements indicate a strategic direction; they do not by themselves guarantee a particular region, control, or infrastructure arrangement for every customer deployment.

March 16, 2026: Small 4 and an NVIDIA collaboration plan
On March 16, Mistral announced Small 4 and separately announced plans to co-develop open frontier models with NVIDIA. The companies described Mistral as bringing model expertise and NVIDIA as contributing compute resources and development tools. The announcement is a collaboration plan, not a consumer hardware recommendation or proof that every planned result is already available.
In that announcement, Mistral cofounder and CEO Arthur Mensch said, “Open frontier models are how AI becomes a true platform.” This is Mensch’s stated view of the collaboration’s strategic rationale, not an independent assessment of its impact.
What “open” means for Mistral models
Some Mistral releases are open-weight models with named licenses, including Mistral 3 and Small 4 under Apache 2.0. But “open source” should not be applied to every Mistral model or service without checking its specific terms. A downloadable model, an API preview, and a hosted “Premier” service are distinct forms of access, and the catalog may list different license labels across offerings. Confirm the current license and usage terms for the precise model and version you plan to use.
