Consumer devices can make privacy a shared-space problem: smart glasses may capture images, and listening-enabled watches may collect audio, affecting people nearby who never chose to use them. That is the concern behind the claim “Everything is spying on you and there’s no opting out”—a forceful framing of ambient surveillance, not proof that every connected device spies or that privacy controls are always absent.
How a personal device can affect people nearby
A device may belong to one person while its effects reach others. A camera-equipped pair of glasses or a listening-enabled watch can raise questions for people who are present but have no say in the owner’s decision to use it. The issue is ambient surveillance: information may be captured in ordinary shared settings, where people have not necessarily noticed the device or agreed to its use.

Jenna Sherman, a campaign director at UltraViolet, put the distinction succinctly: “Opt-out models are not consent.” The quote appears in UltraViolet’s press page, which identifies Sherman and reproduces her remarks in connection with a September 24, 2026 article in The Verge (UltraViolet press page).

An opt-out approach can make participation the default and leave people to notice what is happening, understand their options, and act to avoid it. That is different from actively choosing to participate. In a shared setting, a device owner’s privacy settings do not by themselves establish that everyone nearby has agreed.
Why indicators may leave bystanders doing the work
A warning light or sound can alert people that a device may be active, but an indicator only helps if people notice and understand it in time. Sherman’s concern, as reported in the accessible article copy, is that people may miss an indicator in noisy or busy places. That is her critique of the approach, not a settled legal conclusion about what counts as consent.

When awareness depends on spotting a small light or hearing a cue, the burden shifts toward bystanders: they must monitor the device and decide what to do. The concern is not that every indicator is useless, but that its presence alone may not give everyone affected a meaningful choice.

“Everything is spying on you and there’s no opting out” captures the frustration of being exposed to devices in shared spaces without choosing to use them. Taken literally, though, it overstates what the examples establish. The cited discussion focuses on smart glasses and listening-enabled watches; it does not show that every connected device is spying, that all devices collect the same information, or that every privacy control is unavailable.

It also does not provide model-specific evidence about recording indicators, data processing, storage, or retention. Those questions require documentation for the particular device. The broader argument is about consent and design responsibility: a person’s choice to use a device is not automatically a choice made by everyone around them.
