1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA missing feature-flag key should be visible in telemetry, but it should not automatically page an engineer. Record when evaluation returns a fallback, choose that fallback for the feature’s risk domain, and page on sustained customer impact. Then rehearse deletion and recreation using the same cache and configuration-distribution behavior as production.
What should alert when feature flags delete or recreate a missing key?
Separate the signal that explains a problem from the condition that warrants a page. A missing-key evaluation is useful diagnostic evidence; it is not, by itself, proof of a customer incident. Use customer-visible failures or service-level objective (SLO) burn as the paging condition when those reflect the service’s actual reliability target. Track not-found evaluations on a diagnostic dashboard and consider a lower-severity notification if their rate rises while the service remains healthy.

Set any minimum event count and sustained window from the service’s traffic and error budget. A checkout example uses checkout_failure_ratio > 0.02 for 10m as an illustrative page rule; those values are not an industry benchmark or a general SLO. A low-traffic service may need a synthetic check, or may have to accept a trade-off between slower ratio-based detection and noisier paging on individual events.

What should the application record at the point of evaluation?
Instrument the decision point where the evaluated value or fallback changes application behavior. A remote configuration response alone does not show what the application did with it; a failed transaction alone may not reveal that a flag evaluation returned a default. Capture enough bounded evidence to connect the two.
#1 Best Overall
- Distinguish a resolved flag from an absent key and from other evaluation errors.
- Record the resulting value or default, whether the fallback was used, and a bounded evaluation-reason value.
- Include a ruleset version where the evaluation system provides one, so configuration changes can be compared with observed behavior.
- For an individual request, keep its correlation identifier in a trace or appropriately controlled log—not as an arbitrary metric label.
OpenTelemetry’s feature-flag conventions define fields for the evaluation result, reason, error, and ruleset version: OpenTelemetry feature-flag span conventions. Its error conventions caution against putting free-form error messages in metrics or spans because their cardinality is unbounded: OpenTelemetry error-recording conventions. Keep metric dimensions bounded; use traces or logs for request-level detail under the service’s existing data controls.
OpenFeature notes that evaluation details can support telemetry and troubleshooting, while its specification says abnormal execution must return the caller-provided default. It also discourages client evaluation methods from writing log messages: evaluation can run on a hot path, and a deployment that precedes a flag definition can flood logs with not-found messages. Build an explicit observability hook instead of treating provider logs as the complete signal. See OpenFeature flag evaluation requirements 1.4.10 and 1.4.11.
How should you choose a safe fallback?
There is no universally safe Boolean default. Choose the value according to what the feature controls, document the consequence beside the flag, and test that behavior. If a flag controls an optional acceleration, disabling it may preserve the core path. If it governs fraud checks, tax, authorization, or consent, the domain may require a fail-closed outcome instead.

How do you rehearse deletion and recreation?
Run the exercise outside production, but use the cache and configuration-distribution behavior that production actually uses. A unit test can verify the evaluator and fallback interface; it cannot establish how deletion, stale cache entries, or later configuration propagation behave across the lifecycle.
- Delete a test key. Confirm evaluation returns the documented default and records a missing-key reason.
- Follow the business path. Verify the application remains available and the operation takes the documented fallback path.
- Recreate the key. Confirm the configured value eventually resolves and telemetry returns to the normal resolved state.
- Measure convergence. Repeat with production-equivalent cache and distribution settings. Record how long recovery takes in your environment; there is no universal refresh interval supported here.
- Inspect the full trace. Follow a business outcome through the flag decision to the next operation, and correlate observations with release or configuration changes.
How do you diagnose a 404 or a rising not-found rate?
A 404 is an HTTP status, not a complete diagnosis of a feature-flag lifecycle problem. RFC 9110, the IETF HTTP semantics standard published in June 2022, defines HTTP status semantics including 404 Not Found: RFC 9110. The response is evidence about a request to an origin server; application telemetry is needed to establish whether a flag key was absent, whether a fallback was returned, and what happened next.
Rank #4
For a suspected incident, compare the environment, deployed version, region, evaluation reason, cache freshness, and configuration distribution. A simultaneous rise in missing evaluations and customer failures is a lead, not proof that one caused the other. Use a trace to follow a specific request and inspect other stages of the business operation before assigning root cause.

A useful responder check is: can you find a failed checkout trace, see the evaluated key, confirm not_found, observe fallback_returned, and identify the next operation that failed? If not, improve the instrumentation link between the evaluation and the business outcome.

What changes between managed and self-hosted flag systems?
The operational boundary changes, but the application still needs a deliberate default, useful telemetry, and an impact-based alert policy. Compare responsibility and evidence of failure behavior rather than assuming one model guarantees safer lifecycle handling.
| Decision axis | Managed system | Self-hosted system |
|---|---|---|
| Operations | The provider operates its service boundary; the application team still owns defaults and alerting. | The platform team owns health, upgrades, backup, capacity, and recovery. |
| Lock-in | Proprietary targeting semantics may enter application code. | Internal APIs and workflows can create organization-specific lock-in. |
| Cost | Service consumption and contract review. | Engineering time, compute, storage, and on-call burden. |
| Evidence to request or produce | Failure semantics, export behavior, auditability, and an exit path. | Load and recovery tests, staffing, and upgrade history. |
Evaluate either model with deletion, stale-cache, unavailable-evaluator, and rollback scenarios. Ask what failure evidence it exposes and how the team can recover or exit; do not treat a product category as proof that a particular system meets those needs.
