NFC tags communicate with a compatible device over short-range radio when someone brings it close; QR codes are visible symbols read by a camera or scanner. Choose NFC for an intentional tap or discreet placement, and QR for visible, camera-readable access. Neither is automatically more secure or universally compatible.
What is the difference between an NFC tag and a QR code?
| Feature | NFC tag | QR code |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A nearby compatible device communicates with the tag by radio. | A camera or scanner reads a visible symbol. |
| Typical access conditions | The device must be brought close to the tag. The NFC Forum describes a typical range up to 2 cm and a 5 mm Certified Compliant range; Android says NFC typically requires 4 cm or less. These are source-specific descriptions, not guaranteed results for every phone and tag. | The code must be visible to the camera or scanner. Lighting and line of sight affect scanning. |
| Common data or action | A tag can store NDEF records such as a link, text, or contact information, which a device may use to trigger an action. | The reader interprets the code’s encoded payload. |
| Placement | Can be placed in a sticker, product, or other form that users tap. | Can be printed or displayed where people can point a camera at it. |
How NFC tags work
NFC operates at 13.56 MHz. An NFC tag can hold an NDEF payload—a standardized format that may contain a web link, text, or another record. When a compatible phone reads it, the operating system or an app handles the record. The result depends on the tag, record, phone, operating system, and app support; tapping does not guarantee that every device will open the same experience. The NFC Forum’s overview of NFC explains the technology and its tag types.

The NFC Forum’s 2025 Release 15 announcement describes a fourfold increase in the standard’s operating range, from 0.5 cm to 2 cm, intended to make starting a connection and aligning devices easier. That is the Forum’s stated capability and goal, not a promise about the range of every installed tag and phone. NFC Forum Release 15 announcement.

A QR code is a visual symbol that a camera or scanner reads. It can be printed on a sign, package, or other surface, or displayed on a screen. Unlike an NFC tag, it does not require a radio tap, but the camera needs to see the code. The NFC Forum’s April 2021 comparison flyer discusses line of sight and lighting as scanning considerations; it is a standards-industry source, not an independent study of every QR use case. Which should you use?
Choose NFC for a deliberate tap
- Use NFC when the interaction should happen by bringing a device close to a specific point.
- It can suit a discreet or product-integrated placement where a printed code would be awkward.
- Some tags can be re-encoded with a different destination. Check the tag type and phone compatibility for the intended use.
Choose QR for visible, camera-readable access
- Use QR when a visible mark can direct people to a destination without requiring them to locate a tap point.
- It can be convenient when many people need to reach the same destination from a sign or printed material.
- Make sure the code is visible and can be scanned under the lighting and surface conditions where it will be used.
Offer both when visitors may use different methods
For a public-facing sign or product, displaying a QR code alongside an NFC tap point can give people a choice. This is useful where not everyone knows how to use NFC or where pointing a camera is more accessible.
Compatibility depends on the device and the data
NFC tags are not all identical: the NFC Forum identifies five tag types with different protocols and data structures. A phone’s support for a tag and its NDEF record affects what happens on tap. Android supports reader/writer and card-emulation modes; its documentation notes that apps may need to handle raw bytes when Android’s framework does not understand the data. Apple’s Core NFC documentation describes reading NDEF data on NFC tag types 1 through 5 on supported Apple devices and apps. Android NFC developer overview; Apple Core NFC documentation.

From creating personalized shortcuts for your favorite apps to triggering specific actions on your smart devices, the potential is limitless. Explore the endless ways to enhance your digital lifestyle and make everyday tasks more efficient.
For a deployment aimed at a particular audience, test the actual tag, encoded record, and target phones rather than assuming every tap will behave identically. The same practical principle applies to QR: test that the displayed or printed code is readable with the cameras and conditions people will encounter.
Neither format guarantees a trustworthy destination
Close-range interaction is not proof that an NFC tag is safe, and a QR code’s appearance does not establish that its destination is legitimate. A QR code can be copied or replaced; an NFC tag can also present data that a user should verify before acting on it. The NFC Forum’s specifications include signed NDEF as one method for checking data authenticity and integrity, but that does not make every NFC tag or deployment secure. For sensitive or consequential tasks, verify the destination and use authentication and integrity controls suited to the application. NFC Forum specifications.
